Bring back the brutal honesty in television....now no-one can say anything that isn't nice and sugar-coated

I remember once wagging school and was watching Pot of Gold and Bernard King gave a contestant minus five as a score and Tommy Hanlon walked off the set in disgust. Admittedly the contestant was woeful, but Tommy Hanlon objected and said contestants can’t get a negative score, to which Bernard King replied that she wasn’t worth a positive score. Hanlon said he wasn’t in the business of insulting performers and walked off the set. It was a classic piece of television. I hope someone had recorded it.

After that the Minimum Score was set at 10. Magazine buyers got Cards where they could win prizes when Act Scores and totals matched

I worked with Bernard King. He took performance seriously and really hated people not understanding what it took to even start to give it a go. Yes they were amateurs but even the slightest bit of thought or rehearsal would have approved their capacity to perform. He was honest in his feedback and, even though he was completely capable of being incredibly harsh, only saved his worse judgements for people he saw as both talentless and arrogant - a terrible combination. King supported new talent and invested in them. He was a good person.

I am trying to get a copy of when i played the piano in 1974. Bernard said tsk tsk tsk to 10 and bob francis gave me 22...so i scored 32, I played a classical piece and wore a chenille dress, low cut to impress Bernard hehe

Oh wow, I appeared in 1976 on the show, how do you get a copy of these shows??
@Deadly0026 жыл бұрын
You probably can't, but if you can date the appearance and remember who else was on it then you might have something.
@Schteve594 жыл бұрын
To be honest I don't think a low cut dress would have impressed Bernard much.

If only you knew what happened behind the scenes with the Adelaide television stations. That's why we're not allowed to make TV here anymore

King was a real asshole sometimes. At least this guy was not really a recipient of his wrath.

I can see why gay people were frowned-upon when you see him chatting up the Talent lol

Yes well we're not all like that . And it was rather brave of him considering the local Adelaide laws at the time which said you could murder gay people
