How did he get selected to be an astronaut if he doesn't have a bachelor's degree in a STEM field? I understand that he went to medical school, but the NASA website says that potential astronaut applicants have to have a bachelors in a STEM field, and his degree is in international relations. Did NASA make an exception for him?

Probably because of his MD. Medical school has prerequisite science courses plus medical school itself is the hardest science of the hard.

CFNA300 How many Doctors do you know that can practice medicine and operated in an aircraft? He trained seven years to become an aircraft surgical Dr. plus he has a Doctorate in MD. he's an aircraft pilot and he has a Bachelor in International Relations.
