Deniro was only about 33 during filming of the movie. It’s a forgotten movie and people think of Deniro as in gritty movies like Goodfellas and Taxi Driver not in romance movies.

Good Scorsese movie but it flopped at the box office. I guess the late 70’s wasn’t the right time for a classic musical. Scorsese got so depressed he overdosed and nearly died. The script for a Raging Bull got him excited again and out of the hospital

A realistic musical - which didn't quite work, but a brave experiment. Probably Scorsese's most original movie. Somewhat of a curio. If you're going to mix realism with a musical, the contrast needs to be starker. Something like Dennis Potter.
