About two and half years ago... I became a father called Maya. My Daughter's husband likes Frank's music and she sent this song to me today. As hard as it is to hear that your Dad is a woman, they have been there for me from the beginning, questioning and learning but giving it time. Figuring it out along the way, like how to explain this to their then 3 1/2 year old son. They did this honestly and beautifully with children's stores early on and allowing him to process it, in his time and his way. My grandson is a blessing, asking me recently, do you want me to call you Pop or Maya? A loving blessing, I am so grateful for them everyday and love them so much. My son and I have had an up and down relationship over many years before my coming out and I take responsibility for this. I could be a demanding dad with high expectations. Even when I thought I was saying or doing something to help him, I failed to see it from his perspective, how he would perceive it, how he thought about it inside. He was and is still is a big, macho young man outwardly and a loving and sensitive young man inside, trying to find his own way now. I love my son and miss him so very much. It's been over two years now since we have spoken. I understand how hard this was for a son to hear and accept. I pray everyday for his health and happiness and for him to someday come back to me, to talk things out, for each of us to to better understand each others feelings, our struggles and journey. I find myself holding out hope that over time, he could do what I had a hard time doing for him, seeing me, my perspective, my inner reality. Prayers and wishes for happy outcomes to all the trans folks out there with fractured relationships and for their families, taken on this journey, may they all find understanding and love.

Absolutely lost for words. Your brutal honesty about the resentment towards your dad and your eventual reconciliation really hit home. I'd be the first to criticise anyone for resenting somebody for being trans, but it's about where we're going and not where we've come from, and rather than skirt round your resentment you've faced it head on and absolutely owned it in a very public way. I think this is going to be a song I can listen to once. I can imagine it coming on when I'm out and about and ending up in tears. His father having changed as a person. Her issues, possibly, a symptom of her internal struggle, trying and failing to be a man, all the way to finally finding herself and finally being able to live and not just exist.

Frank, I love your music so much! Thank you for all these awesome songs. I only learned about you when "The way I tend to be" got big in Germany.... Being a musician and sound engineer myself, there's another form of appreciation, aside from being a fan. I had the pleasue of seeing you in Berlin, last time you were in Columbiahalle and you were outstanding! I hope to see you again, soon! Anhow, I think, being a huge fan and having somewhat of an "insider's" perspective on the whole music thing - I gotta say, I love this version way more than the studio version. I'm sure you had nothing to say in it, but whoever thought YOUR VOICE needed to be autotuned to the grid needs to quit his (or hers, although I'm pretty sure it was some management guy) job immediately. PLEASE somehow pass it on through management channels: Autotune won't increase sales! For me, I would buy the album. But I much rather listen to live versions on KZbin, than Autotune on a record.
