1. At times (e.g in a tv interview and at some of the '73 Australian gigs), Frank said this song was about Maharaj Ji - the archetypal dubious guru who "manages to come through customs unmolested despite having an entire jewellery store attached to his body". Years later he started dedicating it to Sri Chinmoy, though. 2. The song actually debuted on the late 1973 Petite Wazoo Tour and was almost two years old by the time this album came out. There are some long versions from '73 and early '74 with multiple solos (Frank, George and whoever).

Great reaction to another of my favorite Zappa songs. A quote by Frank Zappa that I always seem to think of when I listen to his music: “Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.” I like to think Frank approached many things in life that way but especially his music. His fearlessness to write whatever he wanted, no matter how strange or bizarre it may seem to others, was one of the thing I really admire about him.

Well, you also have to consider where he graduated High school. Lancaster, California in the Antelope Valley, about 60 miles and a mountain range from the San Fernando Valley, in 1958. When we moved to the area in 1971, Lancaster had about maybe 15k residents. Aside from those working at Edwards AFB and USAF Plant 42 in Palmdale, it was largely agricultural. Aside from the tiny bowling alley, tiny one screen theater, and drive ins, there wasn't a whole lot to do besides rat stomping in the desert at night.

You can hear an earlier version of this song on "The Roxy Performances (live), a multiple CD collection of 4 concerts and additional content that the "Roxy and Elsewhere" album was compiled from. You already listened to "Village of the Sun/Echidna's Arf/Do you ever wash that thing?"... One of the first recordings of "Cosmic Debris" is on track 2 of disk 1 and is more of a slow blues tempo. The nice thing about Alex Winter's Zappa documentary is they raised enough money to start preserving/remastering a lot of Zappa's Vault, mostly the live content Frank recorded (almost everything he did). When Rhino records released the first CDs most of the content was remastered... Many consider those recordings inferior to the original vinyl. They have remastered those to original so you can get both versions now. I love listening to multiple versions of the same song to hear the differences in style, Instrumentation and Band personnel over time. Sometimes you can catch versions of a song with completely different lyrics and even an instrumental version.

Nice. This is the song that first turned me onto Frank. The lyrics got me to start with then that Dirty guitar solo just drew me right in. It was on a Zappa mix tape that a guy I worked with had given me back in 1985. When he gave it to me I had listened to a couple of songs, didn’t get all of the chopping and changing and put it away for about 6 months. One Sunday I was bored and looking for something different to listen to so I put it on an let it play through. Cosmic Debris got me, then San Berdino, then Pojama people and then Doreen. The rest is history. It has become the biggest addiction of my life. I completely missed the Grunge thing in the 90’s just chasing down and listening to Frank’s music. Still doing it Today. Just can’t seem to kick the habit. The next two songs on the album need to be played together. They don’t have the same impact being played separately., then the last two are stand alone. Hope you don’t think that’s just a Zappaite trying to get another song out of you. Keep up the good work 👍 Andrew.

About the sound. I'm hearing what could be in-laptop fan or perhaps room ceiling fan noise, with a lighting hum? 60 Hz? Or, muted AirCon? Assume this is coming via the reaction audio, not the played media stream. Suggest using a decent mic and preamp isolated / distant from the recording system and connecting via screened cable. Q: is this a laptop + external mic? If so, the built-in mic on the laptop might be active (i.e. 2 listening @ once). If the audio-in chain looks good, there may be a ground hum loop going on. To fix that either star all grounds to 1 good point OR isolate everything. If using a mains PC, switch to a laptop and run it on batteries while recording - disconnected from wall power and other powered stuff. The earpods. Clearly a splitter being used; how is that powered & earthed? Taking out whatever you guys use might fix it (easy to test too). Try going passive i.e. resistor network as a Y-split to each earpod - this will drop volume but will need no powered electronics hence no loops can be introduced. Or, power the existing splitter by batteries, not a wall wart. What else? Again... if a laptop, try a different charger esp. an expensive one. Might be an issue in that. Tho running / recording on batteries would help. These may not help if the interference is magnetic fields inducing stuff in the ear and mic cables - at that point all bets off. Might need to use a different location. As you are in the music industry, expect you can find a sound guy.... I can help no more, too far away! All the best ! :)

You should hear him sing in the sixties, his voice was not as deep, it changed after he was attacked on stage and had his larynx damaged. This is one of his most performed songs, and as short as it is here, it usually ran twice as long live. It was the type of song that was used to highlight a guitar solo, much longer and far different than the one on the album. This even got radio play back in the seventies, it might be considered on of his more 'pop' songs.

It is basically a blues in 4/4 which definitely ranks it as one of the more accessible songs. There’s a earlier version released on Little Dots where it was arranged with mostly horns and saxes. Great guitar solo on that one too.

Didn't he also say that he kinda likes his new voice but wished he'd got it another way?

@magiclittle fingers2020 Then there was this little song that he and his daughter Moon threw together one night that made Valley Girls famous, I honestly think it annoyed him how popular that song became. I remember when you heard it on the radio quite a lot.

I think one of the best albums is "One Size Fits All", you already heard "Andy" from that album, but there is lot of gems left, for examples "Inca Roads" =)

They have also done, San Ber'Dino. Check in this weekend, you might get your wish, just not the way you expect it.

@@Peter-K The Zulch Auto Works he speaks of was an actual business. I think it's changed hands and businesses several times now. The first time I saw it I was driving south on the 15 and through the trees and down the embankment, it jumped out at me. A couple of miles down the road and I figured out why. Not sure if they put it up because of the song, or if Frank just wrote what was there, but they had "We Fix The Cars You Hurt" under "Zulch Auto Works". And at that time they still had that "Dark green smog" as well.
