I’ve barely scratched the surface of Zappa. Never listened to him until I saw some of your reactions. So far everything I’ve heard I’ve liked. Yes, it’s fucked up music but I think that’s the genius of Zappa. I watched one live clip when Steve Vai was in the band and Steve started a solo which was crazy and then it goes to Zappa and I was blown away. I had no idea he was that good on guitar. I just picked up my first vinyl from my local record store. They had a bunch and had no clue what to get so went with the Grand Wazoo as I’ve heard one of the songs. Like you, no chance of me going though all of it but I’ve done the “Alexa, play frank zappa” a lot. Lol.

Always got the sense that Zappa was just a little pissed off that the suits made him write lyrics.

I was a total Metalhead in high school, when one of my high school music theory instructors gave me a copy of apostrophe on quadraphonic 8-track. It's been downhill ever since!

My first intro into Frank Zappa was the cassette tape "Zoot Allures" and HOLY CRAP! Instrumentally so different then the entire song "The Torture Never Stops" sold me. Again blown away decades later, his son Dweezil (almost out performing Dad IMO) in Canada 2008 *"Zappa Plays Zappa ~The Torture Never Stops"*

The album this is from is an absolute classic. During this period of his career Zappa was at his most creative, Overnite Sensation and the following album One Size Fits All are his finest. Along with Waka Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo they comprise a fantastic period in Frank’s career.

In the summer of '75, a friend of mine needed gas money, so he sold three 8-track tapes (EEK!) to me for $5. The tapes were Heart - 'Dreamboat Annie,' Rush - 'Fly By Night' and The Mothers - 'Over-nite Sensation.' A world of music for a mere five bucks!!

"Not a speck of cereal" and "Nothing but the best for my dog" were lines lifted from dog food commercials around that time, which made them all the more funny and relatable. BTW, since you're a musician, you're sure to enjoy "Zomby Woof" from the same album.

Overnite sensation was my very first contact with Franks music back in the 70's. It totally blew me away. Zomby woof, I'm the slime...and all this sh*t had me sitting there eyes and mouth wide open and just thinking WTF!!! 😂 I miss Frank so much.

Great reaction Justin! Old Zappa fan here, since you're a bass player you have to listen to Frank's The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution from Sleep Dirt album. It's a +13 mins of instrumental greatness featuring Frank on guitars, Terry Bozzio on drums and Patrick O'Hearn on bass. Fantastic jam !

I started hearing Frank at the time Over Night Sensation and Apostrophe', came out, when I was like 12.......and those 2 albums are at his peak and radio play started happening....Sheik Yourbutie was probably the other hit album recorded about 5 years later....Frank was so great at that time.....Dinah Moe Humm, and Dirty Love , lyrically may make you cringe a bit !!!...Believe it or not, in the 70's ...they played Dirty Love on WRIF 101.1 FM and other radio stations in Detroit, on the regular

Overnite Sensation is a great intro to Zappa! Really short album too, all bangers (bar one 😂). I would go for these albums: Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe, Sheik Yerbouti and obviously Joes Garage. A complete listen through of Joes Garage would be amazing.

I've tried and tried and tried to get into Zappa. I love him, respect everything he did, but outside of his more fusion-y stuff nothing would stick. I felt like for all the great chops, the comedy was almost like a smutty Cheech and Chong album or something. But it sure beats listening to The Residents! 😁

a congressman i think republican type called Zappa "uncouth" because he was using uncouth language while being accused by Al Gore's wife (Tipper) of making inappropriate music, with a side of Christtianity no-nos.

70's Zappa is overrated (except for the album One Size Fits All, which is a masterpiece), rest is mid 80's Zappa is underrated : even more satyrical, slicker sound, and guitar playing peak 60's is overlooked, when he was the most creative, like on the album "Uncle Meat"
