Yes that series of discs is a just guitar greatness and madness. Frank was known to have very extended guitar solos, often going 20 minutes or more and they are all on those cd's for the most part

Frank's genius lent him to do the "out of the ordinary," such as Musique concrète, found sound, fusion, etc. Since he has some 120 albums full of music that covers just about every genre, hard not to find something you like. He's one of the most important modern composer and maybe of all time. Go deep young man, you won't be disappointed.

I can't think of an artist with a bigger catalog to explore. It would take years. "Watermelon In Easter Hay" is perhaps his most beautiful instrumental. You can hear him playing with Jack Bruce and Jim Gordon on "Apostrophe". He did indeed have Terry Bozzio in his band (check out the Zoot Allures album). George Duke, Lowell George, Flo and Eddie, Captain Beefheart, Aynsley Dunbar, Adrian Belew, Chester Thompson, the list goes on...

The solo is so amazing it doesn't sound like a person is doing it -- it sounds like it is a musical force coming in from another magical place into our existence. But Frank was just that amazing, and he could translate straight from his mind to the guitar and add it all up with flourishes of the moment, and conduct a whole band at the same time. Zappa's compositional skills during solos is unmatched, he could throw a 7-minute solo that would follow the entire progression of the original composition, expand upon it, come back and forth into the main themes, and be concise and emotionally overpowering at the same time. As great at pulling heartstrings as Gilmore.

I'm not an expert on FZ, but always got a kick out of songs like "I'm the Slime", "Montana", "Cosmic Debris", "Dancin' Fool" and "Valley Girl." Also "Peaches en Regalia", which was the theme song that played before every film at Mud Cinema, the campus film co-op at Eastern Michigan University. Now my favorite Zappa song is "Blessed Relief", a beautiful song written and recorded during his convalescence after being attacked onstage in London. You won't get bored exploring the Zappa catalogue! 🎵❤️🎵

That was one of Frank's bluesier later solos. Sometimes in his later playing he might throw in some Stravinsky inspired whole note scales. The reason I requested "Inca Roads" last year was so that your first Zappa exposure would not be something that would immediately turn you off. Besides his complicated music, he also had songs with sexual content that would appeal to an adolescent sense of humor, and I didn't want you to hear those first. The Mothers of Prevention was all about his participating as a witness in the congressional hearings about censorship in music. He was also extremely sarcastic about TV evangelists and many politicians. Czech leader Vaclav Havel was one of his biggest fans though. Then there is Zappa's 20thC orchestral music. His son Dweezil does a good job keeping Frank's music alive with his Zappa Plays Zappa group, and is a decent guitarist himself, having had E.Van Halen as a guitar teacher as a teen.

Steve Vai often, unfairly, gets grouped in with the typical shredder guitarists. His work with Frank Zappa however, in my opinion sets him Miles Ahead. He understands and approaches advanced harmony like no other metal shredder can assimilate to. Joe Satriani etc eat your heart out.

Nick, you've now opened up the Frank Zappa rabbit hole, one which you will marvel at and scratch your head at the same time. Frank Zappa is a genre unto himself, the Beethoven and Bach of contemporary music. PS: that's Zappa playing guitar on the song. Frank could not only pick out amazing musicians BUT could also play as well as they could, maybe not as technically trained as Vai but a crazy good player (even Steve Vai calls Zappa a genius) and I love his sound. I have many songs to recommend but I'm sure you're going to get tons. The one I would recommend is from Sleep Dirt called "The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution" It's pure jazz fusion that's right up your alley with about an 8-minute guitar solo by Frank that you will really appreciate. Nick don't be intimidated by listening to his music, BUT I will warn you it can get absolutely out there, especially if you just focus on the lyrics. The way to listen to Frank is to listen to the music first, ignore the lyrics (for the most part), and hear the music. Frank is a composer in the classical sense so his music often reflects that which often makes it hard to warm up. It's often very odd, but just as often it's conventional in Frank's own way. When I was younger I thought Zappa was a joke because of certain songs I initially heard of his. Then in college, I heard "The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution" which is all instrumental and I did a complete 180 and now have almost every Zappa record. Granted many songs go right over my head but a vast amount of his work whether I like it or not is really genius and I just don't have the ability to understand it, but musicians do and trust all those greats that have played with Frank. k that's it & keep up the great work!!!

Zappa's "the Black Page" (live, part II) would be a great tune to get into. Complicated is an understatement, but it's still an emotional piece with the melody attached to it, and as a calming finale, the band goes into an old jazz piece which very much reminds me of Duke Ellington in a way.

I believe he was still living in Boston when he got his gig with Zappa (which I think started just with him transcribing music for Zappa. Could be wrong about that).

So I'm starting with your latest. And yes, what an incredible pair of musicians. So creative. I even think Frank taught Steve to play, but maybe that's just my memory playing up.. And this track is one of my favourites. Just adore the lead in riffs, so clever, so intricate and delicate. I think it was the 90s when this came out, and I tried to learn it.... Nope, with no sheet music, and no internet I couldn't get close. Its still a masterpiece, and no, I'm still not gonna try and play it lol... Frank has been my hero for over 30 years. A few years ago I saw Dweezil live in London. After the gig I got to meet him and he signed a setlist for me. Using my opportunity to ask him a question I asked "If they reboot The Running Man will you be in it?". He looked at me funny, laughed and said "No". The reason I asked is because to me, absurdity is the only reality.

I love Zappa. lol ... The first official "date" I went on with one of the counties most prestigious family members the Lovely Dolly Burnham we went to the University of Davis to see...The Mother's. It was awesome. I don't think Dolly was expecting what we saw. I think it was 1967. My favorites of many great albums are We're Only in for the Money, and Joe's Garage.

For non Frank fans, there is something a little misleading about the "Steve Vai talks about Zappa" video (if you watched the whole thing). Vai talks about a great Zappa guitar solo at a sound check, and then they switch to footage of Frank soloing. The soloing shown is from before Vai joined in 1980 - from the Baby Snakes movie, when Adrian Belew was with the band.

If you want to get immersed in Zappa, check out the Album " You Are What You Is" also from the 80s. 20 tracks, each side tells a story, many of his albums do. Perhaps a good album reaction for Patreon, or you may just want to listen to it on your own. He has so many albums, hard to hear them all! This is just one of my favorites, I've had memorized for years! Love your reactions!

Not everyone likes Zappa's music but it is definitely genius, and an acquired taste. He rarely used 4/4 time signatures. He was also a great satirist with his lyrics and pulled no punches on any subject. The "woke" crowd would be having a hissy fit if he was still writing today. He was to music what Picasso was to paintings - an abstract artist. He was also a phenomenal guitar player. There's a short clip on KZbin of Steve Vai describing his audition for Zappa, you should check it out. It's pretty funny.

Yes, Zappa, Dylan, Beatles, Stones, Byrds, CSNY, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, Premiata Formeria Marconi, Tangerine Dream, Alan Parsons Project, Steve Vai, on and on and on... dozens of great artists made their best work in that period from 1964 to 1984 when magical things happened on stage and in studio. What the hell happened to MUSIC, anyway?

music and music business developped into the same direction as everything in life : it's all about money and fame.
