Over-Nite Sensation is great because it's disciplined, and even (gasp) melodic throughout. Dirty Love is my fav. 🙃

Love the SNL version of this with Don Pardo reading some of the lyrics and saying “I’m the slime, Frank!”

That entire concert (Live from NY) was performed with the SNL Band, (along with Don Pardo) also known as the band that played with Belushi + Acaroid (The Blues Brothers)

This whole album is FIRE. Lots of shorts tunes but all are hard-core Zappa. Easily top 10 of Franks album releases.

Probably my favorite Zappa album. That compressed kick really cuts through.

This album was my first exposure to Zappa as well. I was instantly hooked and reeled in by the mixture of catchiness, musical absurdity, wacky humour and immense wit behind just about every song. Still one of my favourite albums from him or The Mothers. I hope to hear most of them some day but the catalog is so massive LOL

My favourite Zappa Album. I wonder what song he would have written about today's social media.

Zappa brings a smile to your face. 😁 And I love his vocal style, like the rest of his style -- there's a clear wink to let you know it's okay to smile and not be so serious.

It’s early rap, he’s doing. He did it on “Trouble every day” Freak Out in 1966, also talking about how media manipulates the narrative.

"I am the Slime" is such an awesome track, funky yet with Frank's twist. The lyrics, yes we knew them all & they are a warning to us all. The guitar riff is amazing, the whole thing not long enough. Top album though, one of his best. "Bobby Brown" would be a good one next, lyrics & all.

@@Owlstretchingtime78 Normally I'd agree, but I think it was the right choice for this song. Zappa walks up to the mic, makes his point succinctly with wit and precision, shreds enough to make it a satisfying listen then fades away before anyone has a chance to get bored or lose the message. It's uncharacteristically punchy and direct, and all the better for it.

For a side of Frank you haven't reacted to yet, there is his 20th Century orchestral music. This is the avenue he was able to pursue with the funds his rock music provided. He was interested in music by Edgard Varese and Stravinsky as a teenager (He wrote letters and talked to Varese on the phone when he was 15). He considered his 2 albums with the London Symphony Orchestra unsatisfactory due to lack of rehearsal time - but the piece "The Perfect Stranger" from the 1984 album Boulez Conducts Zappa is a good example, and not too long (12:46). A later orchestral project is his 1993 album The Yellow Shark. Then there is his music programmed and played totally on the Synclavier, like his 1986 album Jazz From Hell.

I think vocally it fits the song and the theme, and probably a good contrast to the upbeat vocals in the chorus. Nice variation in colours

Regarding Zappa’s voice: in 1971 he was pushed from the stage by a jealous boyfriend and sustained serious injuries including a crushed larynx. This resulted in the lowering of is voice

Yes, I remember your Montana reaction! I was slightly disappointed and surprised. I had anticipated something else - then. The short version is: you have improved! Better analysis and more entertaining! For the future: it is not possible to check through his full production. But it would be interesting if you check some of his very early stuff, for several reasons. One is that they are all so totally unexpected in the scope of what was produced otherwise at the time. Also I suggest to check a quite unknown Swedish band with an obvious inspiration from Zappa's music: Samla mammas manna / Von Zamla. Live video (one of very few) "Harujänta" or album audio: "Circus Apparatha". Best wishes

For my sanity (ahah) and a more full understanding of Mr Zappa, I will take the hard path of reading as many books about him before diving into his huge colossal work. It's not that I haven't listened to him, in fact I have heard more than three (if I remember well, some ten years ago...) albums by MoInvention. A friend of mine ( more into jazz and classical and hard stuff, a great FZ admirer) says Lou Reed is better person than a musician, an interesting artist and whose life is way more important than his work. In Zappa, I think I can't handle the complexities of his music, but from what I read so far (only two books, at this moment), I just love it. He's a satirical, protest musician like few. And we're talking of an artist outside of singer/songwriter field (folk-based, and so on). Which is great! (though I prefer folk) So, that's it.

Nice shirt I don't really like this song. The lyrics are dated for me, a bit on the rebel teenager side, mind control and stuff meh, and I'm not a fan of his vocals here. Anyway my favorite Zappa era is 79-84. You need to do "Drowning Witch" one day :)
