I saw Frank Zappa in concert in Germany around 1980. Most mellow concert. He told the crowd, we're here to have a good time, step back and sit down. The crowd listened and it was a fantastic show and everyone could see the stage and show.

Seen FZ 48 times in concert .. became friends with Alice Cooper when I lived in Vegas and all we ever talked about was Frank's musical genius
@Peter-K3 жыл бұрын
Got me beat buddy, I saw him a couple of dozen times, but I didn't get to start until the late seventies. I can see why Alice Cooper raved about Frank, he got his career off the ground by producing his first album. I've heard that when FZ listened to AC's first album he told him he didn't understand it. Then he surprised him by telling him he would produce it for that reason, can you confirm that? Pretty sure I once heard Cooper tell that story.

@@Peter-Kthat sounds about right. Zappa was very critical of what the music business became I.e, a & r people deciding what "Da kidz" want to hear, instead of before when a big record company cheese would release music they didn't understand and see if it sold. Frank lamented the corporatisation of music and the homogeneity it promoted at the expense of creativity.

You were right about it being a skit. Drummer Terry Bozio, husband of Missing Persons lead female vocalist Dale Bozio, wears a devil's headdress with cape while performing as The Devil. A true performance piece by Frank and Friends.

Love this song as a fellow drummer I'm a huge Terry Bozio fan and does a great job on the drums and playing the devil. I recommend reviewing Punkys Whips by Frank "The Man" Zappa. Bozio does a fantastic job singing and playing drums on that one look up the live version. Great stage presences.

A modern biker take on the old Faust story, a bit of a musical comedy theater rather than a song. One of those no studio version pieces, designed only for a live performance. He could do it all...

In all the excitement, nobody seems to notice that Frank had a profound classical education. This, of course, is based on the famous legend of Dr. Faustus who sells his soul to the devil (Mephisto) for eternal youth, the "girl" (Gretchen) and fame.

Along with songs like Bobby Brown, Catholic Girls, Jumbo Go Away, Charlie's Enormous Mouth, Be in my Video, Nig Biz, Punky's Whips, just Frank being Frank. Not songs I've chosen to listen to more than once, if I've had to (Even certain albums I avoid with impunity: 200 Motels, Thing-Fish, Filmore East, etc.) Frank wrote songs for many reasons: to be funny, social commentary, to piss people off, etc. Zappa himself said, "You're not going to like all my songs, but I don't give a fuck."

One thing about that Halloween Live at the Palladium release is it contains 5 concerts with 5 performances of Titties N Beer. The back and forth between Frank and “the Devil” Bozzio is different at each show. I own the release and haven’t played through all five shows yet.
@Peter-K3 жыл бұрын
Frank knew that when he played multiple dates in the same city a lot of fans would see every show. There is a clear 'script' for T&B that runs through every version, but like his guitar solos, there was also room for all kinds of improvisation during the conversation between biker Frank and Satanic Bozzio. That's what made each show so different, you could see T&B played 5 times, and all versions have distinct differences that make each of them unique.

The Yellow Submarine film was intended for a younger audience, though there are elements of both film and music that are more 'adult' oriented. Hey Bulldog in particular is no kid's song, but it was actually removed from the original release of the film. Both of George Harrison's contributions are pure psychedelia: a sonic recreation of the LSD experience. Kids - don't try this at home. ;)

I prefer, the 1978, " live in NYC" version to this one, although his non musical tirade was off the hook on this one. The best part was, I got to see him do this for the opening song, long ago, on Nov 28th, (thanksgiving weekend) at the beautifully ornate ( and long since closed down) Uptown theatre, with Terry Bozio dressed as the Devil. Epic opening to the show for sure.
