CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) demonstrates for Dr. Waldman (Edward Van Sloan) how the Monster (Boris Karloff) understands commands.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Still regarded as the definitive film version of Mary Shelley's classic tale of tragedy and horror, Frankenstein made unknown character actor Boris Karloff a star and created a new icon of terror. Along with the highly successful Dracula, released earlier the same year, it launched Universal Studio's golden age of 1930s horror movies. The film's greatness stems less from its script than from the stark but moody atmosphere created by director James Whale; Herman Rosse's memorable set designs, particularly the fantastic watchtower laboratory, featuring electrical equipment designed by Kenneth Strickfaden; the creature's trademark look from makeup artist Jack Pierce, who required Karloff to don pounds of makeup and heavy asphalt shoes to create the monster's unique lurching gait; and Karloff's nuanced performance as the tormented and bewildered creature. Frankenstein was greeted with screams, moans, and fainting spells upon its initial release, obliging Universal to add a disclaimer in which Edward Van Sloan advises the faint of heart to leave the theater immediately. If they don't: "Well...we've warned you." Director James Whale was memorably embodied by Ian McKellen in the Oscar-winning 1998 biopic Gods and Monsters.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1931)
Cast: Colin Clive, Boris Karloff, Edward Van Sloan
Director: James Whale
Producers: E.M. Asher, Carl Laemmle Jr.
Screenwriters: John L. Balderston, Robert Florey, Francis Edward Faragoh, Garrett Fort, Richard Schayer, John Russell, Peggy Webling, Mary Shelley

It IS horrifying. A monster, made from human remains, alive. The make up is so good, and the way it lurks…it’s hard to understand because it’s so iconic, but for a brief moment I can imagine the terror people felt watching this for the very first time in 1931. A masterpiece of horror.

My older sister happens to have the same problem. She can't even sit through a film from the 1980s, because the quality is "too blurry", and the effects are "too cheesy". Oh well, that's her opinion and point of view. I could at least watch the Jekyll & Hyde film from 1941 without any "super big" problems.

The sound of his boots stumping the floor is kind of creepy, along with those quick closeups to the phase. The lack of music helps too. As for the light, I think the meaning of it is that the monster unconsciously wants to die, and therefore go to the light, but when the light is taken away from him is like his chance to truly die and be at peace is taken away from him, leaving him in his current state of misery, because he's neither dead or alive. :(

After reading the book I would conclude that Frankenstein (the guy who created the "monster") is the real evil in the story. He treated his creation with hate from the start purely because of its appearance. The "monster" started out virtuously and was impelled to violence by Frankenstein's (and the human race's) continual and unjust rejection of him.

@@ramirezrem There are also many movies from the 1930s -1940s that *don't* have much music when compared to movies today. We're also talking about "mood-making background music" here. Watch a lot of the Sherlock Holmes movies of the 30s - 40s, Bulldog Drummond, Mr. Moto, or Charlie Chan. Music is present, but it's often part of the plot ("Charlie Chan at the Opera,"* for one,) or it's due to the location in-film. It's not so frequent that there's tension-building music. A later example is "The Asphalt Jungle" from 1950, and the *only* music in the whole movie is in the title card sequence, end title card sequence, and *one* Jukebox scene. There isn't even any background music anywhere, at all. It's desolate, that's the tone of the movie - it's a "robbery gone wrong" movie. * Boris Karloff was in "Charlie Chan at the Opera," too. It's my favorite Charlie Chan movie from the Warner Oland as Charlie Chan era (1931 - 1938.) Why? Because it's a Charlie Chan movie, it has Boris Karloff in it, and Music is part of the story.

2:40 I love this part. It’s so deep a gesture. I always viewed it as a desperate plea. The monsters way of saying “What have you done to me?” “Please”

People don’t realize that this is the blueprint to zombie movies today if it wasn’t for that 17 year old girl writing the Frankenstein novel there wouldn’t be a zombie genre

Karloff is brilliant in these scenes. It's always been unclear just where and when the Universal Frankenstein films take place. Most of the people and places have German-sounding names but almost everyone speaks with English accents. At times, it looks like the events may be placed in the 18th century but at other points, characters use semi-modern devices like telephones and electrical equipment.

Good points. I've just always found it interesting that the films, which I love, contain so many inconsistencies.

The part where we get those stilted close-ins on the monster’s face is brilliant and is done in such a genuinely eerie manner that is very rarely seen in any other movie. The dead silence, the basic shot just looking into his dead face, the bumps inward on the details on his face. Sometimes less is more and this is a great example.

This was the scene that scared the hell out of everybody, sending audience members running out of the theater, screaming. One woman actually sued Universal for trying to scare her to death! What I particularly liked about the Monster's entrance is when he first comes through the door, HE WALKS IN BACKWARDS!!! This has got to be the only time in film history when the star makes his grand entrance this way, I believe. Once he's inside, he slowly turns toward the camera, and the DP does an extreme close-up on Karloff's dead face, with truly horrifying results, even by today's standards.

You’re right - I never saw an entrance like that before. I never saw this movie. It seemed like a relic in the 80s when the horror genre was booming. Seeing it for the first time later in life, the first thing that comes to my mind is David Lynch in his prime, but without the constant ‘hat & cane’ intrusions that Roger Ebert not unjustifiably disapproved of. This scene isn’t ‘scary’ to me but it’s infinitely complex and profound. It’s as much about watching a man undergo a total transformation, as it is about the way we can become aware of our own rituals by searching imploringly for and encountering ourselves in the most unlikely of circumstances. I also can’t help but notice that there’s a clear and present sense of doom in the immorality of the resurrection of a soul for one’s personal gain. What makes the scene horrific in my view is the fact that the monster has to be abused to exist, and therefore exists to be abused.
