Frankie Bones and Lenny D were pretty influential to what would become the Breakbeat Hardcore scene in the UK. Loads of the people that would go on to create what became the Essex hardcore sound were going to the Barn and being inspired by the more breakbeat side of house being played there. The Prodigy for starters were regulars and I'd imagine a lot of the Suburban Base crew were there too. You can hear all the basic components that start to make up the hardcore sound in this mix.

Duuude this was 1990...i was going to these events from 1988, it started in 87.. i get what you're trying to say and DJ Bones is one of my faves too, but don't put him on a pedestal.

This is when freestyle and radio "dance" music was bigger than techno music, but yet it spawned the transition into techno and house. What a great time to be around the scene. The following 4-6 years were some of the best years in techno/rave/club history.

"Dance" music was _never_ "bigger than techno". Well done for showing your age. Aphex Twin is _still_ an electronica savant. [Goggle it... "Come To Daddy - Aphex Twin", thank me _never_ . You're welcome.]

The barn was amazing. I recall having several great nights there and occasionally going on to a party on top some cliffs on the Essex coast, dancing and watching the sun rise. Oh and met Keith et al when he had long hair! Good times and cool people.
