Like it or not, 1984 was the year of Frankie and this song was EVERYWHERE ... I remember being on holiday in Cornwall that summer and it was on repeat in all the bars in town. The tragedy for me is that year I was 15 years old ... this year I'll be 46 ...

They might have had good producers, but they could play brilliantly live. Just look at some of their live performances on here. This is a great version of the song, and Holly Johnson's voice is unique.

@srck The reason this different version exists is because the BBC Musicians Union insisted that any songs with orchestral elements had to represented on stage by real musicians playing or - as done here - removed from the version performed on screen. BTW Frankie were real musicians as represented by their superb live concert performances.

Not true (initially at least) For what it's worth, it's been said that the only members of Frankie Goes To Hollywood who actually performed on Welcome To The Pleasure Dome (the entire album, I mean, not just the song itself) was Holly Johnson. They were actually an existing band before they got their record deal, but apparently Horn didn't feel any of the other guys were good enough to be on the album. The thing I always thought was interesting was the band itself didn't have a keyboardist, yet obviously the sound heard on their records is very synth/sampler heavy.

Paul Morley had nothing to do with the production of the song; he was a PR man behind the "Frankie says" t-shirts. Frankie wrote this song 2 years before they were signed and played it live. Yes, session players were used on WTTPD, but Frankie showed they could hold their own as a live band.

@coppicer "but nothing has really changed. we still rely on popular culture to keep us informed and help us see the world as it really is" that is precious. Pop culture helps you see reality? One must learn to triangulate the news, just as any other important data. Don't rely on just 1 source, listen to all sides & then learn to discern. Or follow your pop-culture emotional feelings. That'll work for the corrupt politicians since you can't reply with real objections (just popular ones)

Is it true the band didn't actually play on the record? It's a bloody great song and is a meister wok of production. I've just occasionally heard tidbits about it all being Trevor Horn's genius more than anything. I could be wrong of course

the band could have played it but the drums were done on a synclavier, the bass also (probably, definately not a fender precision for fks sakes) and the guitars were done by steve lipson or some other geezer that was involved in the background with the music company
