Looking for Camping in Wisconsin's North Woods. Don't know what to expect from the different public campgrounds. Well, you have come to the right place. In the series from the summer of 2023 I am working to remedy any questions about the different public campgrounds in both the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest, as well as the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forest.
Between the two areas of Wisconsin's north woods I have visited 32 Campgrounds. Some with as few as 6 sites and others with over 100.
I will provide you with a walking tour showing and describing each and every campsite I can without risking the privacy of children within them. I will also attempt to show what amenities each campground provides as the time of filming.
In the National forest the sites are spit between first come first serve and reservable sites via recreation.gov. Even the reservable sites can be nabbed for a few nights if the reservation sign does say it has an upcoming reservation. You would just need to move sites before the reservation date.
In the Wisconsin State Forest the reservations can be made on wisconsin.goingtocamp.com
All sites are reservable up to 11 months in advance. However, you can also make same day reservations through the site or by calling the number provided on the information sign at each campground. Except for a few overly loved campground in the state like Devil's Lake, Koller and a few others and on some particular dates like July 4th, You can usually find last min sites through out the system especially if you are only staying one or two nights. And same day reservations do not charge the reservation fee.
For example, I recently looked for a night at a campground with my wife on a Tuesday. I looked same day. Devils Lake was completely sold out, but by going up the road 10 miles to the other side of the Wisconsin Dells I found 1/2 the sites at Rocky Arbor empty and available. I did the same thing last year with a trip up the Lake Michigan coast. I tried last min at Koller with no luck, but had a great night stargazing at Point Beach State Forest.
The point is, be flexible, Plan ahead if you really want that perfect spot, but don't tell me All the State Park Campgrounds are always full. This series will show just how many waterfront sites could be nabbed last second throughout all of these campgrounds in Wisconsin's north woods for verry little money.

About 20 years ago, i did my very first solo tent camping at Franklinake. I just knew i was going to hate it. But the north woods did their magic, and i fell in love with camping. I still have that cheap Farm Fleet 2 person tent as well as several others. I would highly recommend a visit to the National Forest Ranger Headquarters in Eagle River for forest tips. Also, if you find you need camping supplies, there are several excellent camping supply stores in ER. Thanks for the video of the Nicolet. Hope to see you in the Ottawa NF.

I've been watching your reviews for a while now, and just have to say you do an excellent job! I now have a much larger trailer than my last one and your campsite looks give me a good idea of what I can get into. Thanks much and keep 'em coming!

We just got our first travel trailer this year and have been watching many of your videos to make our list of places to go in Wisconsin. The site by site tours are enormously helpful when deciding whether our trailer and truck could fit or not and the overall tours of the campgrounds gives us a good feel for the places. We appreciate all the effort you put into making, editing, and posting your videos.

Thank you so much for sharing your campground tours! I love watching every video you do. When making a lakefront campsite reservation or putting a first come, first serve campground on my to camp to do list I like knowing more about the lakefront campsite experience. I'm actually at a lakefront campsite as I am writing this. And while it is lakefront and the views are great I am unable to access the water via my site. There are rocks I would not dare climb over to get to the water! I love the views but I always prefer a site where I can access the water and get my toes wet or go for a swim. I'd love it if you could expand upon campsie shorelines! I appreciate all your campground tours and keep up the great work! 👍

I do try and show a few waterfront access views with each campground when sites are empty. I have been surprised how many I have visited where the waterfront was shared access

Appreciate the time and effort it takes to put this information out. If your travels or interests take you to the miles of forestry roads and boondock possiblities, please let us know about those as well !!

I stumbled on a few single campsites, but not many. Some were $5 a night per person payable at the nearest boat ramps

Wow!! Beautiful campground with huge sites. I am definitely putting this one on my list to visit!! I wonder if they’ll change the generator usage rule once they add electric to the campground. As a tent camper, I prefer to use non electric sites. I’m not a huge fan of the noise from generators, so that would be a plus if that will go away, or be less usage in the future. Having electric there will be so nice for the folks with campers. Love - “plan for all seasons when in the northwoods”. So true!! 😂 Thanks for the great tour!

I grew up camping here every year during the 70s and 80s. Beautiful place to stay. I think they should leave it alone and not add the electricity.

Unfortunately, generators have become the norm at campgrounda without electric hookups. They can really ruin the outdoor experience. But so can campers who never turn off the AC

FYI, as someone who has stayed at Franklin Lake a lot, none of the lakeside red-banded sites have electricity.

Well none of the sites had electric till this summer. And it looked like they were not crossing the road to the waterfront side.

@@SconnyWandering Yeah we stayed up there last fall when they started to do the work and then most recently over 4th of July (a few weeks after you were there). Honestly one of the best campgrounds in the country!

Its just that the sites are so big a tent would feel lost. Buy that shouldn't stop you
