Didn’t know that. Here in Belgium we are familiar with kabouters (gnomes) which are more known as forest dwelling creatures very in tune with nature and animals and basically look like the typical garden gnomes you’d see in people’s yards. I assumed Oda just made up the name based on ‘kabouter’ but it seems the Klabautermann in One Piece is based on a real-life naval legend. That’s really cool.

This always bothered me. Spandam is the definition of incompetence, how he managed to become the leader of CP5 and have an interview with the 5 Elders is a complete mystery (not to mention everything that happens next). It's one of those rare characters where I feel Oda messed up. He should have given him at least a couple qualities, or tone down his flaws just a bit.

You can also see this is why Usopp broke down so much and had the fight with Luffy. Because she is a member of their crew she is part of their family and they were going to leave her behind because she couldn't keep up anymore. Now it is a valid reason as they said they get stronger after each encounter but Merry just gets more and more hurt so it wouldn't be fair on Merry to push her further. While Usopp having a lot of self doubt he saw it as them saying if you can't keep up we'll leave you behind. Which he imagined would happen to him sooner or later so he pulled the trigger first.

During the Duel, Kiss said Usopp was fighting to "prove he's a warrior". This episode shows that is _not_ the case. What annoys me is a decade later, some One Piece "fans" STILL haven't been able to retroactively look at that duel with the new information this episode provides. People _to this day_ will say "Man, Usopp declared a Duel for no reason, it's _just a ship"._ Well no, it's NOT _just a ship._ And I don't mean that in the metaphorical "sentimental value" sense; I mean it is _literally_ more than that. It is a SENTIENT, LIVING, THINKING entity, and Usopp is _convinced_ of that fact. And this episode shows that HE WAS _RIGHT._ Now that unfortunately does not mean the Merry can be saved, but his reaction during the fight now makes MUCH more sense. Usopp's shame, failure, insecurities & hurt pride motivated his departure from the crew. What motivated _the duel_ is the Merry _being alive._ He keeps saying that during the fight, too "I'm doing this for the Merry, I will _save_ the Merry"... He means it _literally,_ because he is _convinced_ it is alive, and again, _he was right._ And it is one of my biggest peeve about this fandom that the majority of people STILL haven't put that togethed after a decade.

Usopp needed time, that's all. He knew, he just needed some time to accept it. Klaubatermann is a real-life legend, although it's a little different. Doesn't matter, Merry was so loved by her crew, and by Usopp, that she pushed herself, perhaps farther than she should. Franky's backstory is an interesting one, too. He knows more than how to tear a ship apart. This saga will continue to make you feel…everything.

It's super well done imo. Having Franky force Usopp to see most of Merry's scars are beneath the surface. That she keeps trying to carry them past the point she's falling apart. And I think of Usopp caring for his mother, and not wanting to let go of Merry like he was forced to w her. And deep down Usopp knows but doesn't want to accept it. It's a very poignant scene w deep context imo.

So yeah, now you know why I actually recommend for people watching for the first time to skip G8 and finish this arc before going back to it. After Skypiea, the identity of whoever fixed the Merry is left as a mystery; did someone stow away aboard thr Merry in the Blue Sea, or did someone in the White-White Sea somehow know what Merry was supposed to look like? And here, it's a big surprising reveal that it was the Merry itself, its spirit taking on corporeal form for a brief period. Which is an awesome reveal. But G8 foreshadows this, in my opinion, a little too much, by having a guy who knows nothing of the Straw Hats' situation being able to make a guess about who fixed it, making it clear that this is a known, if rare, phenomenon among sailors, rather than some specific individual we already know about. Anyway, as you could probably guess, the Klabautermann is a real legend, started by German and Dutch sailors.

This episode, the hard conversation between Ussop and Franky and Usdop confession that he knew about Merry's condition, Was ONE of many reasons why G8 Arc was terrible and inconsistent.. Its not surprising at all actually but what surprising was why many people like that terrible arc so much.. Many stuffs that contradicted the canon, strawhats suddenly became so incompetent and out of character just because PLOTs. Nothing in G8 even remotely possibly can gave any challenge yo the strawhats.. For example Luffy literally solo 2k marine in THAT island and yet Strawhats had trouble in G8.. What a joke

I haven't seen G8. But Luffy on Enis Lobby was clearly extremely motivated (and will affects a lot in One Piece), as well has having done training as a response to losing to Aokiji. And not all marines are identical. Enis Lobby wasn't ever expected to be attacked, it didn't have anyone prominent guarding it. Judging by the name, I expect G-8 might have a Vice-Admiral there, that could be enough to cause Luffy problems.
