To be fair to Hitler, i think re-assigning army group center to the southern caucasus was a better idea than attacking Moscow. Even if Halder did somehow capture Moscow it probably wouldn't have actually helped that much. Whilst depriving the Soviets of their oil might have deeply impacted their ability to maintain mechanized supply lines and large tank and air formations.

@@Ken-hw1et They don’t have to. Army groups central and south have enough numbers to spearhead the caucuses without issue (well except the weather messing up their logistics) the central army group would defend the flanks of the advance to the south.

I stupidly thought that a clip titled "Franz Halder's Diary" would be about Franz Halder's diary. Most of this is from the TV movie "War & Remembrance" from 1988.

The psychological blow of capturing Moscow would have gone a long way towards ensuring collapse in other places, like the oil regions, and then capturing them without overextension. Not to mention, capturing Moscow would have paralyzed rail traffic in all of Western Russia. The issue then becomes the Germans ability to hold all of that territory. If I were them, I go about installing a friendly government, free of Bolsheviks, taking advantage of anti-Soviet sentiment within the Russian population. We all know that did not happen. Hubris can be deadly
@poyloos4834
@poyloos4834 Жыл бұрын
Taking Moscow would achieve little in the grand scheme of things. It would slow down the soviets for a time for sure, but the russians by this time were mobilized, with a full war economy set up throughout the vast territory of the ussr, not just the west. The German war machine would still be at its breaking point. Trains can be rerouted, spirits can be reinvigorated, and a supremacist regime that wishes to systematically exterminate the slavic people will not try to appeal to any slavs by setting up a puppet government or by telling them that the communists are the true enemy.

Even they conquered Moscow, it will be the same as Stalingrad. Nazi's will hold out the place like more than months. Supply problems will be their main problem. The USSR had so much network, they can encircled Moscow so easily.
@alexfromboston8303

Hitler was actually right that Moscow was a foolish primary objective for Barbarossa. Stalin was already moving govt functions to Kazan 400 miles east. Moscow as a primary objective was Halder's idea and demonstrated what a traditionalist he was in military planning. Halder made Moscow the primary objective because historically in European wars you defeated your enemy by taking their capital and forcing a surrender. Halder didn't understand war in the modern industrial era nor did he understand Stalin's USSR was unlike any enemy of past European wars. Moscow falling certainly would have been a blow to the Soviets but they certainly would have fought on and the Germans still find themselves in a long war of attrition they're not prepared to fight. Maybe there was no strategy that could defeat the Soviets due to the vast distances, horrible weather and Stalin's willingness to sacrifice any number of Red Army soldiers but Hitler's option of a southern strategy to seize and deprive the resources of Ukraine the Caucasus from Stalin had a better chance of success.

Fantastic television series when I was a young boy. I was enthralled in the history of this time. Some actors in the show were just beginning their careers. It sad to note that todays generation has no clue what happened 80 years ago.

Moscow by this time had much more strategic value than in 1812. The convergence of railroads made it critically important from a logistical perspective. While it's growth and establishment as a capital meant the psychological blow of losing the city would have been great

Halder, in my opinion was one of the most pathetic leaders in the German Army. His tendencies to follow orders depend on his personal view of the battlefield. Honestly, if it weren't for him messing up Operation Barborossa Hitler would have had the oil crisis resolved to keep the German War machine pumping for another 2 to 3 years.

Hitler himself designated Moscow as the goal of Army Group Center. He bragged that he would hold a parade there at the end of summer 1941. When the attack was stopped on the city's outskirts, he demanded that there should be no retreat and that the army should hold where the troops stood so as to mount a new attack on Moscow in 1942. However the Russians counterattacked and pushed the Germans away from Moscow.

This was a great bit of TV the likes of they don't make anymore but it has played with history a little. I believe the fact Hitler was near the front in WW1 contributed to his loss of WW2. He still had trench mentality and kept refusing to pull back. In the end, he was an amateur fighting a professional war. Heinz Guderian was the man who showed Hitler lightening war but Hitler decided it was all his idea and so he was far too cocky and lost.
