One of the characteristics that made him unique and famous was that, due to an accident (as a boy he had lost his right arm during a hunting trip), he performed his compositions only with his left hand. Starting in 1873 and for six consecutive years, he studied counterpoint with Robert Volkmann and then perfected his skills with Franz Liszt.
He produced a large body of piano music for the left hand only and was the first professional pianist in the world with only one arm. His Valse d’Adèle is the third in a series of Six Studies from 1876 for the left hand (dedicated to Liszt, who had organized their publication) that Liszt himself expanded in every sense in this version for two hands.
I dedicate this composition to my delightful eight-month-old granddaughter Adele.
