Schubert wrote it as a secular aria to be sung in German but the 'classic' devotional setting of the prayer 'Ave Maria' (in english: Hail Mary) is in Latin. The Latin prayer setting is the most common rendition, nowadays.

It fills me with questions that touch me very deep. Why, why God do we have to suffer so much. Why does God not show himself to me? I want to know that He exists, but I only find emptyness. The more I think about it, the less God remains and the suffering gets more unbearable. What if al these religions are worshipping a God that doesn't exist? If God loves us, then everything is ok. But I'm unable to believe so after what I've seen. Thats why such a beautiful peace of music makes me cry.

My grandma, Hedwig Schubert, a name still noticed in Hitlers "Stammbuch" that everybody was forced to keep for legitimation not being a ... well, we all know what happened than.
