I used to play this in the Leicester Imperial band back in the 60's. My dear late father Alec Anderson was the conductor, my dear late brother Terry played 1st baritone and I played solo euphonium. It was a great piece to play as well as to listen to. Steve Anderson. 25 June 2012.

Such a wonderful performance! Growing up studying trumpet and then baritone horn in the public school system was a tremendous experience ... Of all the pieces we played, this was my all time favorite. We didn't have a string section so our arrangement had to be different. We had a baritone solo at 4:41 where the strings are playing the melody. I was second chair so Michael Hefernan, who was first chair played it masterfully everytime! ... Thanks for sharing

A lot of people look down on Suppe but I find him very uplifting and exhilarating. Great technican, Well constructed. Master of his craft.

People looked down on Suppe because he didn't write "serious" music. His music is pure entertainment and you are right - well crafted and superbly executed.

Special memory for me this piece. My Southern German Hometown played this one during a Christmas Concert in 1964. The I played the second flute along with my Flute-Teacher Mr. Keck, The overture has a beautiful Duet for two Flutes....

Superb. Tasteful balance and interpretation. The double-bass and cello entrance, powerful, yet so beautifully restrained at first brought on the perfect crescendo. A great initiation for new Wharfedale Diamond speakers.

This is absolutely terrific! It's also one of the very few performances of this overture that uses the tam-tam as Suppé specifies - my word, it adds so much! And to those who complain about the coughing early on, get over yourselves or go live in a hermetically sealed little ball. You would have gone ballistic over the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra's superb concerts under Dan Godfrey in the early 1900s at the Bournemouth Winter Gardens where they allowed the audience to smoke during performances - and boy, the British sure did in those days!

Obviously the IBM Philharmonic Orchestra of Japan plays to a very high standard, to judge by this nicely paced and, finally, very spirited rendition. I particularly appreciated the "flute duet" at 5:15 which sounded great on my set-up ...

Just to let you all know....Franz von Suppe's "Pique Dame" Overture is not to be confused with Tchaikovsky's opera work "Pique Dame" because both compositions are different.
@jasontodd51579 жыл бұрын
That's true. The operetta, "Pique Dame," is merely a revision of an earlier, one-act operetta, "Die Kartenschlägerin." Neither "Pique Dame" or "Die Kartenschlägerin" are typically performed in their operetic format (for some strange reason); yet, the overture (along with Suppé's other overtures) has remained a popular concert favourite. Some recordings of this overture are noticeably listed as "Die Kartenschlägerin, oder Pique Dame." This piece has been used posthumously in cartoons; particularly, the Steven Spielberg animated feature film of 1998, "Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish," in which the overture is used in its entirety (although, I'm not too sure whether the recording of that piece which was used in the film was performed by a full orchestra or just a few synthesizers). Since its posthumous use in "Wakko's Wish," the "Pique Dame Overture" has remained a personal favourite of mine. It really is an excellent composition.

This performance is on a par with the great version conducted by Sir George Solti with one of the London Orchestras. The only KZbin version of this I could find stops a few seconds short, so misses the final few beats, although I have the full audio version. This is much better on that score.

Am I in the wrong place? I listened to the piece with great pleasure. People are complaining about constant coughing. I didn't hear any but then again, I have old man's hearing. Perhaps the coughing they heard was their own. They should be checked out. They may have a serious medical condition.
@beginner575 жыл бұрын
KPete, actually many coughs can be heard, at the beginning, even not at such a disturbing volume. Maybe it's not a good news for you: if you can't hear them, it's you the one that really need to be checked out.

I wrote this on another piece: "I generally prefer studio recordings over live performances, but wow! this live performance is just as good. Why I don't like live performances? The coughers!! And why do they sit the coughers right up front I'll never know." btw, I quickly left this link as soon as I heard that coughing. Reply

The coughing beginning at around the 40 second mark and lastng for nearly a full minute harms this performance. I could not not accept this to share because of that. Any person with a cough like that should leave the concert hall. They ruin it for everyone. That person was in dire need of medical attention and had no business being in a concert hall. How inconsiderate!
@miyeon_flute9 жыл бұрын
I agree with your thought! Here's an applause for you (clap clap clap)
@philipcarli37185 жыл бұрын
Dire?! You can't live with less than a minute of human distress? Sheesh - you are a tender soul! So the person pushes past everyone in their row and attracts everyone's attention away from the performance as they leave the hall. Great solution.
