Scharwenka and Rubinstein showed that pianists could write symphonies. I wsh Chopin hd tried his hand at it.

Most great symphonists were pianists or at the very least trained as pianists. Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Mahler all played the piano as their main and in most cases only instrument. Even Sibelius was a good pianist although his main instrument was the violin. Bruckner played the organ, and so did Rued Langgaard, but the extra stave and using a pedal for dynamics rather than touch doesn't make much of a difference when composing for orchestra.

Thanks for posting. I'm familiar with, and love, his piano concertos but was not aware of this symphony. I'll be hearing it again, I know.
