Immigration is not a cruise issue, but a governmental issue. We learned this going from the EU into Southamptom. We had checked into the EU, then we had to deal with the British government and THEIR immigration requirements and THEIR number of people that they put on the ship to check people through. On our cruise, there were 10 British immigration officers. That was a bottleneck. Now, here is an unfortunate reality of the US. We travel a lot to Mexico. Going into Mexico is so smooth. It takes all of 10 seconds to be checked in to the country. Coming back? Welcome to a massive time waste. It could take HOURS of standing in lines. This is without Sentri or Global Entry. I asked some people in Mexico why it was so easy to get into Mexico. This taught me everything I needed to know. I was told, "No one wants to blow up Mexico. Lots of people want to blow up things in the US." I am not trying to defend MSC by any means. I don't think there is anything that they can do about it other than ASK for more officers.

@@FraserAtSea Without trying to get TOO political. This, unfortunately, is a political issue and from different perspectives! Here is one that most people do not think about. Imagine being 18 and not the college type. You can go work at Panda Express, fast food, and get paid $23 an hour. In about 3 years you can earn 85k per year. You can do that or you can go apply to be a border agent. That job will start at $30 an hour. One you risk getting someone pissed off because their order is wrong and they will throw food at you. The other, you potentially put your life at risk. Which one do you think that 18 year old is going to choose? Yes, there are some positions and locations that the border agent will get upward of 150k a year. That job is definitely putting your life at risk. Unfortunately, the US political system likes to use anything border related as a political talking point. The losers are people using the borders, regardless if it is at a port, an airport. road or walking. If you really want to see what the slowest crossing, look at San Ysidro crossing. That is the one that connects Tijuana to California. If you WALK across, this could take anywhere from 1.5 hours to 4 hours. If you DRIVE across, it could be 2.5 to 5 hours. Unfortunately, the US border patrol has graphs showing the timeframe, but those are misleading. Those only count from the time you get into an area that is in the US. It does not count the time in line in Mexico. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWbSYpJ5ntV9ibM Now to sort of defend MSC :) Imagine that long line you saw . . . in YC, you would have gone to the very front of the line. We learned our lesson in Southampton and will only travel in YC.

@@davidbergerson Just saying: have they ever found T'ists or Contraband with all this time wasting extra security no - never. People leave their countries and come West because their own countries are obliterated by the West to make trillions and get cheap oil. They're the angry ones yet they seem to gain free access to our countries with no trouble just walking thru the borders! Yet l applied twice to show my 2 Turkish friends my home in London and they were refused visas - twice - saying £20k wasn't deemed enough 10 years ago for 3 people to live on for 10 days in the UK! PLUS it costs $200 each application at the office here in N Cyprus and why dollars? They say you can appeal but once a decision is made they close you out of the system that you need access to to appeal! For entertainment /educational purposes only!

Aweeeee I’m so happy you got to enjoy Portland! It is an incredible little city, special and unique in so many ways! It will always be home for me. I remember when the very first big cruise ship came in to Portland Harbor! It was a very big deal! My house was on a hill and had a view off the ocean, when the ships came in I would watch them in awe. Then slowly they would disappear from view behind a building… only to reappear minutes later but this time only the top 1/2, the rest of the ship was hidden behind buildings. It was so amusing every time and never got old 😂, the top half of a cruise ship floating on top of the buildings 😂😂😂. I’ve never been on a cruise, but have always wanted to.

Fraser, i really commend your positivity on this ship. I think at this stage, I'd be silently crying in a corner😂 I work full time, and have 5 weeks holiday leave a year. Theres no way you could pay me to waste my holidays going on a MSC ship. Ive been on Celebrity (2 more booked in 2025 and 2026), princess and RC. We're on VV in September and the extra you might pay is so worth it. This vlog series has shown me, that although my husband wanted to try MSC, that im right to stick to my guns😂and refuse. I do agree, MSC ships look beautiful but the amount of time they give in ports, is too short and the management definitely needs to be trained up. It honestly does not look like a positive, relaxing holiday, way too claustrophobic for me. Now that i found your channell, i need to check out the rest of your vlogs. I'm not on a cruise but our flats joint fire alarm panel outside both flats was beeping every second of the day all day and all night. We managed to get it to stop for either 30mins or it would come back on beeping again after only 5 mins or less. It was driving all 3 of us crazy. I turned it off 12 times one day and most of that was at night. The landlord booked in an appointment for the electrician to fix it. We had to wait a few days for that day. I stayed in all day and he never arrived or let me know he couldn't turn up that day. Every day after that I had to stay in the flat while my partner and neighbour nextdoor both worked. I could only leave to work after 7pm waiting in all day. So I was forced to work late as I had to be here. It beeped all day and night for 7 days and then the electrician turned up on day 7. He checked it and waited 5 mins then left. It beeped nonstop again 5 mins after he left. I was about to text my fiancé to say it was fixed but I had to let him know that it didn't work. The electrician couldn't come for another 2 days so I was waited until he let us know. He let us know last minute so those days we thought he was turning up. If I was anywhere downstairs in the flat especially where I work from home doing my paperwork before going out to my other jobs. I had a massive headache all day and night. As it was constant. Upstairs in the bedroom is it wasn't too bad but I couldn't sleep because I still had a headache. Thankfully when the electrician arrived the 2nd time he realised he needed a new battery part so he went to the builders merchants to get it. He fixed it really fast after that. Waited and then left. It finally worked so the whole panel doesn't need to be replaced. No more beeping. So we had 9 days of nonstop fire alarm beeping.

Under US law all cruises must leave the US and dock at a non-US port, the only exception to this is if the ship was built in the US and crewed by US citizens, the only ship that would meet this is the Pride of America As another poster has already said, the UK border force make all passengers present their passports when the ship docks at a UK port whether or not the people are planning to set foot in the UK
@FraserAtSea
@FraserAtSea Ай бұрын
Hi John, Totally agree, and this should be done this way. My issue here was more that our ship went from the US - Canada - US - Canada - US, so we had constant border checks, which killed so much of our port time! Totally agree with you though - it's often the same everywhere!

Howdy Fraser, You aren't the only person that is having problems with MSC. Plenty of problems with MSC. Portland, ME is a great place. Commercial Street runs close to the ship. Congress Ave. runs perpendicular to Commercial St., but, you must walk up the hill. Portland is a great town and lots of good eateries and drinks there. A beautiful looking ship doesn't mean you will get a good cruise. Had a Pumpkin Beer once. It tasted pretty good. The train must be fairly new. They didn't have one operating at any of the times we went. Fraser, do yourself a favor, no more MSC. Sydney is a good town. Had a lot of fun in Sydney.

OK, the cruise may seem criminally cursed but me and Steve are very impressed at how you were trying to stay positive, and pretty much managing it. The narrow gauge railway looked great, we hope to try that one day. We’ve been to Portland twice on cruises now. we loved it the first time about four years ago, it was so pretty and clean, but when we went back in 2023 - in between cannabis was decriminalised - the streets were full of junkies just lying around on grass verges, zonked out of their brains. It was sad, and unnerving as people approached us trying to sell us drugs. glad you managed to miss that… perhaps things have got better. Anyway, we look forward to the next video, as we loved Sydney, with its giant fiddle, and folklore museum (specialising in bedbugs). Also, there are some amazing ghost stories associated with that town…

What is the underlying problem with MSC? Things that other cruises make look seamless, MSC make look like a natural disaster (the only other time I've seen queues like that). And take the smoke alarm as an example. If a smoke alarm goes off when it shouldn't, you don't inspect it in place and declare it's fine. You replace it, then you can inspect and test the faulty one where it doesn't impact on customers. You don't take chances with smoke alarms, because one that goes off when it shouldn't, might not go off when it should.

I swear that ship is cursed/haunted. Was on it last October and the bedside light would randomly turn on and off day and night. Same thing happened to many other passengers - crew "looked into it" and said nothing was wrong. As for the "oh well" attitude, the spa (which was an additional cost) had several amenities not operational. When I shared my dissatisfaction with the manager, I was told "the part is in Miami and it will be fixed when we dock!" as if one part would fix three separate features 😂 To make matters worse, when I reminded her the ship was not docking in Miami, she just stared at me and finally said "What is it you want?" Ugh. Beautiful ship, but some odd things come with a journey on it. Thanks for sharing your experiences (and letting me know it wasn't just me!)

I assume you’re referring to Ben and David. Did you actually watch the videos? They gave the MSC World Europa glowing reviews on just about everything from their accommodations to the food to the service. Does that count as “terribly biased reviews?” It only went south when someone banned them from filming. And still they didn’t edit out their high scores toward the end of the 2nd video. Also they didn’t have a big camera rig but a mounted hand-sized camera which even regular vacationers who want steady videos use. Have you seen those long selfie sticks? They can be just as intrusive but no one has reported being banned from using them on a cruise ship. MSC has always been hit-or-miss with more intense negative reactions on the miss side than compliments on the hit side. With that in mind, look at B&D’s videos of their previous cruises with MSC. They were very positive about their Mediterranean cruise on the Meraviglia. It was the British Isles cruise on the Virtuosa where they encountered lackluster or terrible food in the MDR and buffet (they praised the food in the speciality restaurants) and discourteous behavior by staff including being shouted at in public. Would it have killed the person concerned to take them aside and quietly discuss whatever the issue was? Do you think their calling out these things is “terribly biased” reporting and that people shouldn’t complain if they experience low quality food or poor service on a cruise? And what huge public tantrum? They simply included the incident in the video and explained their decision to leave the cruise prematurely while inside their stateroom. How is that “kicking up such a fuss?” Like the previous poster said, please get your facts right before making such comments.
