Me and my wife took Fraser's lesson while visiting Tekapo on our honeymoon. Fraser was flexible and built the lesson around what we were interested in. For us, he had 2 telescopes setup.. one for showing us the night's sky and one for photography. He got excellent pictures of the moon & jupiter with my wife's point & shoot. And words can not describe the pictures of orion's nebula with my DSLR. Cost was $80 for both of us. In my opinion a must do while visiting Tekapo,

Hi, I visited Lake Tekapo on March 6, the weather was good and weather website rated that night as good for stargazing. I was able to see stunning number of stars but couldn't see Milky Way. Tried it on 10:30pm and 12:30am but simply can't see it. Is Milky Way observable only from certain spot or hour?
@IEatBabies4048 жыл бұрын
The milky way is best observed late in the summer so around August. You also want a sky that is clear and moonless so as to not dim the light of the milky way. Then even after all that you have to actually spend hours looking at the night sky so your eyes will get used to the darkness and then maybe you'll see the milky way.
@IEatBabies4048 жыл бұрын
and even then it's not going to look like what you see in this video. The cameras these guys used are super sensitive to light and your eyes just aren't sensitive enough. You'll see probably a cloud like thing. I'd bring a telescope or binoculars if you wanna see it better.
@shiouming8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation. I gave my luck second chance by joining stargazing trip at Queenstown. The professional guide confirmed that the not-so-obvious patch I observed on sky is actually Milky Way :)

lc Lucky hi Lc Lucky - as long as it’s a clear night you can see the milkyway (but it’s better when there is no moon - or a small crescent moon) there will be some nebula in the night sky all year round, but sadly with your eye even in a big telescope you can’t see the colour - this is captured with Astrophotography ( timed exposures ) if you were referring to the aurora then you have to be lucky this only happens a few times a year (once again much better thou the camera) there is no set time of year for this

Sadly there are no free public telescopes to use - There are 3 groups offering astronomy related things, the biggest is Earth and Sky, they run a star watching tour on Mt John ($105) there is also Tekapo Starlight which offer a naked eye tour in the village ($20) and I offer photography with a telescope (starting from $40). Tekapo is about half way between Christchurch and Queenstown

What is the background "music" for? Doesn't the film speak for itself? I'm going to NZ for 2 months in 2020 and all my online research about what to do and see is wrecked by musak. Every KZbin video has some sort on awful moronic noise going on. Why? What possible purpose does it serve?
@FraserTK5 жыл бұрын
Ian Sharp for most part others like the music, may be you could try turning the volume down or using mute - if you personally don’t like it
