I have a personal theory on why the Mi 17 IFF system was turned off. It is likely because it's a Russian weapon, and Soviet/Russian doctrine regarding IFF is to keep them shut off till active war. IFF systems are actually very tricky to use. They give a specific signal which resonates with the IFF frequency of the AD systems. The problem is, spoofers exist which can mirror this frequency. And US bombers were equipped with these during Cold war. So Soviets won't switch on their IFF in peaceful times even at risk of fratricide. When Russians export weapons to their customers, the training manual teaches the pilots to keep IFF off for most part. Furthermore, there's a genuine chance Pakistan has spoofers themselves, so they indeed might use those in war. I guess these complicated guessings caused the AD operators make a honest but fatal error.

Every plane or helicopter has IFF and transponder that identify it, Seems the chopper its IFF switched for some confidential reasons, but the air defence batteries assumed its PAF helicopter trying some insertion, so they shot it down. If based on what you say, IAF will have a lot of such incidents as planes/choppers fly all around. In fact only when a fighter gets into enemy air space it might turn off its IFF as case might be,

For many complicated cryptographic reasons, IFF may be jammed dbut it is nearly impossible to spoof an IFF signal. If Pakistan managed to spoof an Indian IFF signal it speaks to the incomptence of the IAF.

Sir, Thanks for the vid its informative. At that juncture of time where you have to take decision or you will be hunted its only and only training which can mitigate such incident. Commoners will be more focus on pointification there is a beautiful remark to give them a think before they say anything - AN INCOMPTENT SHOULD NOT JUDGE A COMPETENT - An individual who has spent 500 + hours in training is far much better than who spent there 5 or 10 mins in comment sections- not to forget exam as well. However sir, i have question - Tejas GE engine is going to become a bottlneck considering the current situation i see US is going take advantage. After 20+ years Tejas is order in bulk but as the time is progressing the only stalemate is engine and that to from US. I am not very confident about this deal. Your advise is sought.

Well explained. Some experts I have seen gave an elementary version and blamed it all on IAF, citing compatibility issues between NATO and Russian Weapon Systems.

Other countries shooting down their own aircrafts does not justify this incompetence by the IAF. Lets accept the fact that this was a grave error and was avoidable.

Great Information Sir. But the question remains unanswered. What was the IAF helicopter doing there. Was it a rescue helicopter?. If yes then whom was it rescuing? Abhinandan or someone else? Was it going to capture the downed F16 pilots? Who was the Doosra Banda. ?

The IAF helicopter was on a routine internal flight within India close to the border when forces were in a heightened dtate of alert knowing that Pakistan aircraft were approaching. There is no infromation on why its IFF was off and why the IAF air defence did not verify that the target was not hostile. Doosra Banda is F-16 the pilot that Abhinandan shot down. Doosra Banda was far far away inside Pakistan. He was the second pilot that Pakistani civilians had seen parachuting down inside Pakistan AFTER Abhinandan was captured. The Pakistani spokesman admitted that they had a second pilot in hospital and later suppressed all news about him.

The mi 17 heli was airborne just on time when dogfight happened. It was most likely meant to access the damage which took place due to pak dropping bombs .

However I have "unnamed" sources who gave some details and I can say that this "battle damage story" is fake. You can dismiss it.

@cybersurg can you make a video dismissing pak claims of shooting down our su 30 mki with strong evidences? Many Pakistanis are giving support arguments to this claim like- 1. An accident of 2 indian pilots which happened a month after the the airbattle where squadrone leader rakesh pandey lost his life. 2. The amraam missile shown by iaf was blasted indicating that it was a conformed hit. 3. Iaf mi17 getting airborne just 10 minutes after the attack.
