@@t-revstastetube8900 The automatic was a no-go. It would've been easier with two hands and eventually you were going to run into a "power" problem. The one handed has been great with not one problem. PS. I bought two to have one as a back-up in case anything went wrong.

I have been using an OXO can opener for 7 or 8 years now, and I love it. I move the handle as I turn the crank and it's nearly effortless to use. I also have a decade's-old Swingline that I used for many years--all metal except the vinyl covers on the handles, but I stopped using it once I got the OXO.

Smooth edge can openers are the best. The lid cut with a smooth edge can opener can be put back on top of the can (for use as a temporary cover), but cans opened with a conventional can opener cannot.

@@shawbros Good point about the smooth edge can openers. BUT, one disadvantage they also have is, because the edge of the lid is on the outside of the can, you can't use the lid to drain liquid from a can. You can do this with a conventional can opener where the edge of the lid is on the inside of the can.
@shawbros
@shawbros 4 жыл бұрын
@@robwalton2007 No, you can still drain the majority of the liquid, by holding the can with one hand, and the lid with the other, turn it over at about a 45 degree angle, and just slightly open the lid until the water flows out.

I had a KitchenAid opener and when it fell apart after about 5 years I went through a few of the cheapie ones and I hated them, they hurt to use. I found one of the $35 soft openers for a whopping $3.50 at my local hardware store and I love it. I have limited use of my hands and I have no problem with this opener and it's great if you don't use everything in the can, you can put the top back on and it closes well. The only thing I have to go back to the old opener for is tuna since you can't squeeze out the juice with the larger rim lid.

For manual can openers i prefer the soft-edge type because i find it easier to get the lid off the can. However, the can opener i usually use is an automatic one (normal type, not soft edge) with a built in magnet that causes the lid to stay behind when the can is removed. Another benefit of the soft-edge type is that the lid can be placed back on top of the can after it has been removed, which makes it ideal if you don't want to use the contents of the can all at once.

We got the EZ squeeze one a while back and comparing it to all the other can openers we have used in the past it seemed a lot better. Especially with people I know that are left handed. It was so good I ended up buying another one for the other kitchen. Instead of twisting your wrist over and over again, you get a good grip work out with the ezsqueeze. Plus you don't have to rush to open the can by squeezing really fast over and over again. I guess if your in a hurry and need to open a bunch of cans in like 2 seconds then maybe it wont be the best. Also the feature of the magnet was a nice touch. As for those soft edge can openers tried a few of those in the past and the lid might not be sharp but a lot of the times the cans themselves can be sharp especially when your trying to scoop out something and your fingers/hand gets to close to the opening. Maybe they have improved it to where they doesn't happen anymore.

I agree with you John, the OLD American made Swing A Way can openers were good. Not the new Chinese made ones though! Bought one at Walmart in 2016 for $10.49 plus tax, 3 years in & now it skips a couple spots on the can & you have to go over it again, then use a spoon to lift the lid out & twist it off the can. Even after disassembling it, cleaning & reassembling it, it still acts up. My OLD American made Swing A Way never had those issues AT ALL until it got lost in a move. Avoid the NEW Swing A Way can openers at all costs, the quality is gone now.

I bought it on clearance probably 10 years ago for 7 bucks at my local Meijers store. Found one last year at Goodwill for $1.00. Was glad to find it if the other one ever gives out. Still going strong though. I also have a Kuhn Rikon soft open one, looks similar to the oxo one. It works well but not as easy as the One Touch. I'm spoiled by that TV one, lol. This was rather informative. Most of the cheaper dollar store can openers around here blew out in recent months. So, I was considering using pull tab cans exclusively or shelling out the big bucks for a _'smooth edge'_ can opener I didn't know how to use. Now I have a clearer idea of how my money should be spent. Years ago, even before the pandemic began, I noticed that can openers became scarce in dollar stores and discount stores. Seemed strange. The quality of the few they did stock seemed to just... drop off a cliff from there. Weird.

All the traditional can openers could have been considered smooth edge as well, you just have to turn it (there are videos of this on KZbin). Some argue that that is how all traditional can openers should be: smooth edge. Smooth edge is just a gimmick to get more money for inferior products. Once I flipped my traditional can opener the “right way” to get a smooth edge I haven’t gone back to opening cans the old way. Feels like less of a strain on my hand. So win-win! But I gotta say, that kitchen aid can opener looks amazing.

Just yesterday my friend was having problems opening a can of green beans. Im pretty sure it was a dollar store one too. It had been heavily used and we could barley get it as it kept droping off. I have weak hands as it is. I will never use a can opener that cost less than 5 retail in my own kitchen.

Are there any can openers that are good that have a handle that works like a fishing pole? I can't twist my hand to use traditional working can openers.

Honesty, I prefer using FREDs over regular manual can openers, lol. Oooh, you could compare them to the speed you can get with a FRED 😂

I've had my Farberware can opener for going on 7 or 8 years now. The Kitchen-Aid is calling me though. I've always hated electric ones.

Swing-a-way is way more durable than most these! Comparing after one use for comfortability is great but only a partial percentage of the overall test! Many sealed cans are different. Washing and drying the opener for inhibited mold or rust. Hanging or storing the opener options. Plastic vrs stainless vrs garbage alloys! Good luck!

I have several of the dollar store can openers. I have one in all my emergency kits. They work adequately and are less expensive so if it gets lost no biggie

I don’t know what engineering goes into can openers. They seem pretty simple. I was put off when my expensive Oxo stopped working after 12 years. So I went the whole route of 1/2 dozen different cheaper can openers. None of them could still open cans after a month. So I am happily back to Oxo.

That ratchet type would be good for someone with one hand or arm. Maybe even someone with arthritis of the thumb, where twisting the handle would be painful. The kitchen aid well, it’s in the name. The ‘no sharp edge’ type, is unnatural to use. The $35 one...it would be worth it only if it’s super easy to use, especially for someone with hand/thumb issues. Having arthritis in my thumbs, this is always a difficult task, kitchen aid is my favorite. Great review...thank you!
