A Rokurokubi is a type of yōkai, a supernatural creature or monster, from Japanese folklore. The term "rokurokubi" can be translated as "pulley neck" or "long-necked woman." These creatures appear to be ordinary humans during the day, but at night, their necks can extend to great lengths. Rokurokubi are often portrayed as women, and their ability to stretch their necks is usually involuntary and happens while they sleep. In some stories, they are unaware of their nighttime transformations, while in others, they are conscious but have little control over it. These yōkai are generally not considered malicious, and their behavior varies in different folktales. Some stories depict them as harmless or even pitiable, while others portray them as mischievous or frightening. The origin of the rokurokubi legend is rooted in Japanese folklore and has been adapted into various forms of literature, art, and popular culture over the years.
