In early 80’s I lost my big rig do to trucking being deregulated. I lost everything. My wife left me and my two boys. I found an empty hunters cabin in Bly Mountain, Oregon, no electricity or running water . I had a .22 , 10 gage and a Fred Bear’s “ White Tail “ compound bow which I put a lot of venison on the table with it . It’s a 60#. I now live in Missouri in a log cabin with 11 acres , still put venison on the table with it and catfish with it at 70 . 😎

I met Fred Bear for the first time in 1970 at Cobo Hall at the Bear American Indoor Archery Championship. I had a pic taken with him at the tournament that I still cherish today. He was a super friendly guy. Definitely one of my all time favorite heroes. I also had the privilege meeting him on a couple of other occasions too, and actually had a group photo taken with him and all of the Junior Olympic winners at the 1972 Bear American. That photo was printed in Archery World Magazine that you could buy right off the magazine rack, (for those of you who can remember that far back). I shot a perfect score with fingers and a recurve that year. When anyone mentions the name Fred Bear I still get goosebumps. Archery was a big deal back then and Fred Bear was the king, (not Elvis). Those were some of the best times of my life. I'm an old man now and memories like those keep me going. Ray Waleszczak

Thank you Uncle Ted for this wonderful tribute to the man if I remember correctly. You said set you on the right path by taking you under his wing and teaching you how to archery hunt. Although I never had the privilege of meeting him. Or you for that matter. I'm an old man now too who is terminally ill. But like you I believe I was set on the right path by him through 2 things. A stack of deer hunting magazines and a Fred Bear recurve bow exactly like the 1 in these photographs you showed. The very 1st day I carried that bow into the woods in my bluejeans and camo shirt at the age of 12. That was in 1983 that I harvested my very 1st button buck and I was hooked for life. Thank you Mr.Bear for some of the best times of my life. And thank you Uncle Ted for bringing back those memories with the sight of him. It's been a very long time since I've seen the pure form of hunting that I always tried to practice. Beautiful song by the way. I'm sure he would be proud!!❤❤❤

True old school hunter. I still have my compound that I got when I was 16. No let off, set at 70lbs and it still shoots better and faster than some of these newer bows.

Great tribute Ted. I have been listening to your music for more than forty years. I had no idea that Fred was such a great archer. I can only imagine how much more he would have done with the new technology in bow hunting today. I know one thing after watching this video, I sure as hell wouldn’t want him to be after me with a bow. You would have absolutely no chance. I can also tell by your respect for him he must have been one hell of a good human being. You’re lucky to have had a great relationship with him as long as you did.

An entire civilization was built with bows and arrows, Fred was not the first or the best, but he was a good salesman, and for a time a producer of fine equipment. Now he's just a legend to be celebrated.

If the bear had run toward Mr. Bear; it would have been Fred/Dead Bear/Fed…. I had a poster up in my room when I was 9 years old; I slept with my bow and special cedar arrows. He was a hero of mine in childhood. When we had archery at day-camp in the summer; I brought my own bow and arrows; the other kids were just playing, I was practicing.

I have seen Ted 4 times. One of my favorites. I really don't enjoy seeing animals killed. When you hunt its personal. At least to me. You, nature, and the animal. Still love the 5 fingers of doom. Just purchased a big Birdland guitar like Ted's. Been playing 39 years. I don't know why I never got one before.

First off let me say that I love this song it’s a great song and I enjoy listening to it, but this music video really made me sad. I kept seeing the animals that were shot by an arrow go into full and complete panic mode. Confusion and terror literally consumed them. and the pain that the animal was feeling is completely evident, confusion, and these animals running away, in desperation, trying to survive, but they gradually and slowly succumb to their injuries. I am not a vegan and I eat meat and I enjoy fishing. I just feel sorry for the creatures in this video. 🥺

And that,is the paradox, that lots of folks, don't understand. I'm a hunter. And proud of it.The taking of any life,is a sacred thing.I am thankful for every harvest.Realizing, the circle of life and death,is set in stone.Humans wouldn't have survived without hunting.

I think Fred was absolutely anticipating having to send another arrow. In that split second. Not sure if you are referring to the bear fleeing downhill or the one he whistled at (the first bear he whistled at if you watch the original footage). I was talking about the one he whistled at. May be the same one you are not sure.

I've always loved this song. It was shown to me years ago by an avid hunter and friend. I was raised in the south where hunting was and still is a way of life and survival to some. I was taught that all life is sacred. With deep American Indian roots. "If you kill it, you eat it." With one exception for protection of another life or property. I truly hope he or someone ate all these animals that were killed. 😢
