I spent most of my teenage years in and out for violent crimes. I got kicked out of every boy's camps and ranches, and my probation officer got tired of my ass. He was ex military, and he gave me a choice. He told me that I could go to CYA and transfer to prison, or I could join the Army. He told me that if I took my attitude with me that I'd probably end up in prison anyway, but there was a chance that the Army could straighten me out. I chose the Army, and I loved it. I was doing good until my abuelita died. Around the same time, a white dude's grandma died. Our Top Sergeant was a known racist and let him go to his grandma's funeral and denied me from going to mine. That was it. I was getting into fights almost every night. I was going toe to toe against 2,3,and sometimes 4 guys and walk away victorious. They never reported it. All of my arrests were from one on one fights. I looked for any reason to fight. One night, I was partying with some Chicanos from all over Califas on Cinco de Mayo 1977, and a white guy just walked into the room. We were listening to Mary Wells Two Lover's, and I went off on him telling him Why did you kill Zapata? Why did you kill Pancho Villa. I'm not even Chicano. I'm Puerto Rican and American Indian. I just didn't care anymore. After his beat down, we went to our ranflas because we were going to meet up with some rucas and go cruising. I had my 65 Impala, We were cruising in some firme ranflas. We picked up with the hynas and caravaned to Moaes Lake. We were rolling deep. My 65 Impala, a 48 Fleetline, a 58 Chevy, a 64 Impala SS, a 68 Buick Riviera, among others. We were about 15 cars deep. When we got back, we went to a night club on base. Me and one of the homies from Pico Rivera just got back to our tables to drop off pitchers of beer. We were standing facing each other talking, and a white dude decided to walk between us instead of around us. I've never been one to allow someone to disrespect me, so I pushed him. He turned around and asked who pushed him, and I told him that I did. He took a swing, and it was over for him. I beat him so bad that he had to go to the hospital. The homies took me to the car so that I wouldn't get arrested. When we got back to the barracks, the military police were waiting for me. I got cuffed and stuffed and was changed for the 3 aggravated assault and batteries I committed that day.i was in another fight that day. I lost my freedom and my 65 Impala. Man, that 65 was bad ass. I wish I had it now. I only got 4 years which was always piece of cake for me. We didn't have a lot of politics in Ft.Leavenworth and since having spent most of my teenage years a ward of the court and having been doing time somewhere I knew what to expect and how to act. Out of the 4 years I did 3. I got out in1980 and haven't been back. I still can't believe that I'm 65 and still alive.
