Fred Haise: From Biloxi to the Moon

August Taconi recently sat down with Fred Haise and the Biloxi native and Apollo 13 Lunar Module Pilot recounts his fascinating life, from growing up on Back Bay, to his days with NASA, his pioneering time with the Space Shuttle and his harrowing plane crash. The city commissioned the documentary to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 13 and to celebrate Fred Haise, the most famous person in Biloxi's history.

Wonderful guy to have met back in 2010 I was 22 with a overpatched coat with NASA patches. When Fred attended a convention in Birmingham, UK. He was amazed by the handiwork I did and quoted "That's a fine jacket you have there,son" I spin around with more patches on the back of the jacket and brought a tear to his eye. I made his day and it was great to have met him.

They were lucky Fred was onboard. He may have been the most knowledgeable LM guy around. Anywhere. The more one learns about the details, there are more “ya gotta be kiddin’ me” things that lined up just so agsinst them on that mission that is difficult to believe they could make it back safely, but it really happened the way it did.

Looks like this was filmed at Infinity Science Center in Mississippi. Fred is on the board there. For a small donation to the museum he will autograph a photo for you by mail.

Me and my wife go 1-2 times a year to Biloxi and I never knew this! I will be checking out some extra things next time I’m down there, we’ve done the few tours they offer and none of them have ever mentioned him.

If I remember correctly, I read that in Haise's astronaut class, he scored the highest. Can't remember if it was just in his class, or if he had the highest test scores out of all classes.

Shutting down the moon space program in 1972 was a big mistake. We’d probably have a colony on the moon by now. Today we’re starting from scratch to go the same place we first visited in 1969.

Within 20-30 more years they may solve the radiation issue and somewhere in the world we will get a man out of low earth orbit. We just dont have the technological advancement to do it yet. Someday…

They are going to recreate 1968 or Apollo 8. The VAB could hold 4 Saturn V at a time and they planned on 100+ launches. They also planned on the 1984 to 1986 launch window for a crewed mission to Mars.

Years after I left NASA I meet Fred at a meeting after all had left I walked up to the table he was sitting at and introduced myself and told him I had worked on the Space Shuttle. I didn’t ask him about the Apollo 13 mission but we talked for 30 min about the people we had worked with at NASA. Fred informed me of those that had passed and we talked about the direction of NASA, it was a wonderful experience for me and he was such a wonderful person.
