Our African American ancestors settled there in the early 1800's before the first HBCU was established in the country. I know what they had to endure to achieve the milestones necessary to accomplish what they did despite all odds. This song tells it and I want our family, especially the youth to realize it. Labi Siffre wrote this song to support Nelson Mandela, who lead the fight to end apartheid in South Africa. It was written while Mandela was imprisoned there. Nelson was finally release and went on to become the first non-white President of South Africa. However it can be used as a great motivational song.
