As i am a photography student in Vancouver, I have heard and have been taught a lot about Fred Herzog and at one point even had to do a research project on him for one of my academic classes. Shortly after this I was at the Equinox gallery for an opening of an exhibition of his work. My Professor was also there and introduced me to Fred and told him i was a huge fan of his work and explained my research project, at which point he proceeded to give me a personal tour of the show stopping at each picture to explain what he thought were the most sticking aspects of each image on display. Other patrons of the gallery would come up and try to engage him in conversation but he was very careful to not get distracted. I felt very honoured, however i was to excited and overwhelmed to really retain much of his wisdom. Its really too mad. All in all a very friendly and supportive individual! Thanks for the video!!:)

Excellent episode. Love the direction this is going in. Not just rehashing info pulled off google like a school book report, but actually adding pages to the history of photography. Great job!

Ted, I hope you were able to follow-up some more after your two videos. But now as we mourn Herzog's passing this past week, I'm hopeful there is a "follow up to the follow up" video. Thanks for your videos on Herzog and for your TAoP video series.

Thank you so much for covering a personal photographic mentor of mine, not in style, but in location. Being a local Vancouver street photographer and walking the same streets that Fred did 40-50 years ago, I feel a sense of connection with what he was trying to do both photographically and historically. I too have an unusual approach to my work as I use my smartphone and Instagram as my primary medium to share my street photography in basically the same spots that Fred took his pictures. Many 'serious' photographers tease me, and others are outright offended that I use such a simple tool and a simple platform to share, but my goal is to share with as many people the beauty of Vancouver's quickly changing Chinatown. Perhaps in 20-30 years my images will also be discovered when there is no longer any trace of this unique neighbourhood of Chinatown, Strathcona, DTES and Gastown. Fred still walks around and takes pictures, and many locals tell me when there's a sighting of him. He shoots with his Olympus M43 camera, and is known to pop into the Equinox Gallery to just hang out and watch TV. I too am trying to get an interview with him, but my current projects keep me from pursuing him at this time. If you decide to fly up to Vancouver, I would love to try to shoot a co-project with you and Fred. I want to walk around town with him and interview him on the go, while you will probably do an interview at the gallery that has fantastic printed images of his work.

bigheadtaco great story! I really want to interview Fred for the show. I was talking to the gallery as well as one of his collectors. As soon as I asked about getting him on the show, everyone stopped emailing back. Guess that was a touch question!? Brilliant photographer - I hope you get to meet him some day!

The Art of Photography seriously, there's Fred-sightings almost every Saturday in the Strathcona-Chinatown-Gastown area. I have a few people in the neighbourhood sending me pics that they've taken with him. I think you almost have to bump into him, and perhaps have a nice conversation with him without a camera shoved into his face. If you come to Vancouver, we should walk around and talk to those who have seen Fred and try and 'bump' into him...

I just might take you up on that!

The Art of Photography I'm thinking of leaving some of my local Chinatown images at Equinox Gallery and ask them to show them to Fred. if he likes what he sees, I would ask to have a meet and greet with him at the gallery with no mention of an interview or anything, as a first step in having an on-camera interview. I know it took over a decade to convince Bill Cunningham to agree to a documentary movie.

FWIW, there is a public (viewer-supported) television station in Ontario, Canada called TVOntario that has a show about photography called Snapshot. There is a Fred Herzog episode of the Snapshot series (can be seen in this listing tvo.org/program/203881/snapshot) inwhich Fred is interviewed at some length. Congratulations/thanks for your good work, WS
