It would be such fun doing a magic history channel with you for me, I could learn about the great performers like Fred Kaps and how he won FISM 3 times. Also about his dancing cork using invisible thread and the history of the effect etc :-)

@MrZaidini Yes the Kaps Subtlety involves holding the hand apparently empty hiding something in classic palm while the Ramsey subtlety involves holding the hand palm up while concealing something in fimger palm. Nothing new there, and NOT something EVERY magician will use. It depends what kind of magic you are performing and the way you want to achieve your results. It's perfectly possible to thousands of effects without any palming.

Cardini was another great act, that involved cigarette manipulation that is still great to this day.

@MrZaidini I don't give away magic, or heckle during shows; I've done enough shows myself, probably more than you have. But there's nothing wrong with discussing the effects and methods on a medium such as You Tube, where it is very largely magicians reading the threads, or magic students who are interested in learning.

@trantricity I agree we need more gentleman of magic, like Losander. He has a nice bubble routine also. Search Bubble Zombie Nexus

So, what is your favourite prop for close up magic? Are you going to continue your work with coins. Or are you going to develop routines with other materials?
@CaraBrimleyRules

After you posted your video of the extremely good version of ackerman's coins through table routine, I was wondering if you were going to show us some work on cups and balls or perhaps other coin routines. I was quite enthralled by your presentation, which aside from the tablecloth issue was top quality!

@RS1963 You and me have lots of conversations and a good rapport. We could start up a "magic exposure channel" on You Tube to help new magicians. We would expose stuff like Copperfield "flying" (on wires) or David Blaine "levitating" (standing on tiptoe one foot out of view), or the chop cup (magnet holds the ball in the top of the cup out of sight). The things we would expose! It would be a great channel!!

@RS1963 Awwww, I know we have had the odd cross word, but I think we have shared many great moments as well, like when I made helpful comments on your applinglay routine. I know loads about magic history too, Houdin, Devant, Hugard, and Dai Vernon, all that and more. It probably doesn't come through when I am exposing stuff though. I think you need a magical friend and we would make a great team, describing the effects and then exposing the hell out of them. It would be fun and awesome!

Well no is very relative. it's never absolute. Things can change and so can circumstance. What about if we did a channel about magic history without any exposure? That would be fun wouldn't it?!

@MrZaidini Look there's no need to be rude with personal attacks, we are discussing the effects. Let me give you an example. At 0:22 he performs a retention vanish, keeping the ball in his right hand. At 0:27 he rather clumsily transfers it back into his left - anyone can see that - and then he pretends to "produce" it from the cloth in his left, all the while with a really stupid grin on his face. Now is this supposed to be convincing magic? It may be OK in the 1950s, but not now!

Another trick considered politically incorect. If Fred were still with us today, the PC crowd would've asked him to ditch the cigaret, as well as his famous salt shaker trick (which see)......

@RS1963 Magic is different today. This exaggerated face pulling and stuff where one can hardly see what is supposed to be happening would not get audiences in today's market. That's the point I'm making. So what if he has fans who still remember him from a different era? It doesn't mean he would be a star today, that's the point I am making. And it is a thought that is not only worth a lot, it is 100% true from any angle you care to look at it.

@RS1963 Come on, you will enjoy it! We can call it the RS1963Brimley Exposure Channel. I will get it set up and we can share the password. What I think we should do is upload various effects then you can give a bit of background on the history/technique etc. Then I'll expose the whole gaff. We'll help out in the comments exposing more, answering Qs etc. We can get linked all over the web. Whenever people want to know how stuff is done they will visit our channel. We can get loads of views!

@MrZaidini I doubt you are a magician yourself, having to ask what the Kaps subtly is, LOL. I'm sure you can't even perform a simple retention vanish or shuttle pass.

@Reallush To be honest I couldn't see what was meant to be going on most of the time, He was pulling stupid faces like something amazing was happening but he was just doing a simple retention vanish or loading the ball under the vase from a finger palm. This was complete SHIT. No wonder this kind of act disappeared. David Blaine and Chris Angel really put this old amateur to shame.

@CaraBrimleyRules like human evolution magic evolves.. slowly but surely. what you're doing now is like comparing the beginning with what is now.. just like taking the first IBM pc and then go compare specs with a netbook these days... Just respect the basics man.. without it, there would never have been any modern magic or chris angel etc..

Dreadful example set to children by this magician smoking in his act. I don't think this would be allowed today. Unfortunately the magician shown died early in 1980 from cancer, an example of what cigarettes can do to you :(
@PreservationEnthusiast
@PreservationEnthusiast 8 жыл бұрын
vernonclassic Cigarette manipulation is a thing of the past. You should be ashamed of yourself doing this effect. You are glamorising cigarettes and encouraging children to start smoking. People will get cancer and die because of *your* stupidity. I hope you can sleep realising the suffering you will cause and have caused.

@trantricity I think Penn and Teller are better. This stuff is old - nobody wants to see it. If you put it on TV it would get zero ratings.
@torstenrau2308

I think you missed to ask Penn or Teller about that. I´m sure they both will prise this idol of magic. Beside Cardini there was no better manipulator in all times. And to be honest - David Blain and Cris Angel are very bad examples for a good magician.

@RichGilbertMagic What is your problem? I don't like this Kaps bubble routine. It is a load of lame crap with rather obvious palms of the glass ball while he pulls really stupid faces of surprise when it is totally obvious where the ball is. The plinky plonky music is also supremely annoying. I don't see why we can't offer a proper critique of this effect if we don't enjoy it?
@CaraBrimleyRules
@CaraBrimleyRules 13 жыл бұрын
@RS1963 Nobody knew it is was Bram Bongers. And anyway, if it didn't sound so stupid, why did he change it to Fred Kaps for stage? This is a terrible act. Awful music, setting a poor example smoking a cancer stick, and dreadful overacting pulling stupid faces worthy of the name bongers... this act is bonkers, LOL.
@CaraBrimleyRules
@CaraBrimleyRules 13 жыл бұрын
@L01d3r Yes, I could see how most of this was done straight away, it was simple retention vanishes or loading from finger palms. All complete with wanky piano music. Some of the time it wasn't clear what effect he was meant to be doing, but he pulled stupid faces all the same like he was doing something amazing. Thank god we don't have to put up with rubbish like this in the modern day. Penn and Teller's stuff kicks this amateurish old performance into touch.

@RS1963 Look, of course a magician must be an actor playing the part of a magician, but this guy is just overacting big time. It looks absolutely horrendous!! He'd get no air time with an act like this today!! Just look at his overacting facial expressions - they are ridiculous *ugghhhh* *shudder*
@CaraBrimleyRules
@CaraBrimleyRules 13 жыл бұрын
@RS1963 You obviously have no clue about magic and its history. Everyone one used to call him Bram including his wife Nelly Bongers. Kaps was only a stage name which he chose because Bongers sounded so stupid. I have demonstrated how he was a lame act that would not survive today. You have failed to refute that argument and can do no more than stoop to personal insults, which is against the You Tube TOS when you signed up. Each one of your personal attacks I will be reporting to You Tube admin
