I've been binging Nick Knacks these past few days only for you to go and drop a new episode! Insanely perfect timing. Just wanna say this is one of my absolute favourite series on youtube and you deserve far more views, the amount of research you put into each video is staggering. Edit: Wonderful video, as per usual. It really is sad how 99% of this show is just *gone*. Fred Penner seems like such a lovely guy, and something that he poured years of his life into, that was part of so many kids childhoods, deserves to be better preserved. It really does go to show how ephemeral media can be, even in the digital age - that seems to be something of a reoccurring theme in Nick Knacks (especially in the earlier episodes), and it's such a shame.

This really takes me back to the time when acoustic folk music was pretty much the "default" type of childrens music. The pre-Wiggles era if you will.

As a Canadian who grew up in the right timeframe Fred Penner absolutely was a big part of being a kid at that time, particularly this show. It's stunning to me how few copies actually appear to exist considering the sheer number of episodes were made and how long the series lasted for.

I got to see Fred Penner live in 2013 when he was doing a tour of 18+ shows at Canadian universities. It's kind of weird sitting in a bar, drinking a beer while Fred Penner is a few feet away but the show was amazing and everyone got into it and was singing along.

Great video! I grew up in Canada watching Fred, and took my daughter to see him twice last year. I still have several of his books, most of his CDs and 2 of his home videos. My daughter is now 3 and asks to watch “Ped Pennra” at least once a week. It’s cool to see with the Paw Patrols and Mickeys Clubhouses these days that shows like Fred Penner’s Place and Mr. Dressup (another Canadian classic - Amazon just released a great documentary on him) still hold the same level of interest for todays generation.

I did grow up watching "Fred Penner's Place" during my time as a kid and into my teen years. Yes I watched when I was 13. I'll always enjoy the intro to the show. That music is in graved into my head. I love the mouth harp noise you hear during it. Makes me think of Snoopy playing it. I too have some episodes taped from Nick Jr. but not to sure which ones you have. Would be neat if you had a few I didn't have and I had a few you didn't have. Then we could easily start on a Lost Media page for his show. The one thing I'm looking forward to is the next episode......Eureeka's Castle! Now that's my jam during the late 89 and into the early 90's. I love what you are doing and keep up the great work. Can't wait!

When the video started I was like, "Why does that name sound familiar?" bu then I saw the guy with the backpack and memories unlocked that I had deeply forgotten! Every thing is just hitting all the neurons and I'm like 'How did I forget this!?" The Elephant Show, Fred Penners Place, Underneath The Umbrella Tree, and up next Eureka's Castle, we are now into my earliest memories of cable television. According to my folks we didn't have cable till 1990, and I do vaguely remember being exited for use to get it, so I guess my memories of Sesame Street are older.

Oh hey, a show I have nostalgic memories of from up here in Canada! Great episode. The lack of surviving episodes/clips is quite shocking, though. I actually have an old VHS somewhere in the basement with a snippet of a random episode of the show, where it's a song about ringing bells. It is absolutely buck wild to me to think that one random song I taped in like ,1992 is probably a tiny gold coin of lost media.

This and Eureeka's Castle.. the two kids shows I loved more than Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street, and I ADORED those shows. Hearing that so much of this show is lost hurts, a lot. So many memories of waiting for Fred to crawl through the log, SWEARING that it was "Fredbird" not "Wordbird" (I don't know, I was a kid!), humming along with the theme song. But the rest of it is fuzzy, and I wonder if it was cause the show was so music focused. I remember segments, skits, but music, as much as I love it, you remember the music and not always the scene around it.

We're finally at the point in Nick Knacks where you're covering programs that I have hazy childhood memories of. While binging through the series, I kept thinking "I vaguely recall watching a singalong show about this beard guy in the woods. I wonder what that was all about." So hey, thanks for giving me a name and some footage to go along with the fuzzed-out preschool images.

Fun fact: Fred Penner had his own planetarium show! "In My Backyard" was made for pre-K to kindergarten and is a lot like the show. Fred talking and singing about all the things he can see from his backyard. Very basic stuff like ladybugs, seasons, constellations, etc, but perfectly appropriate for his audience. There was also a character, Arnie the Arrow (i.e. the planetarium operator using a special cartoon pointer) who would help Fred count the ladybugs, point out planets, and things like that. I used to help run this show at our local science museum, so yes, I got to be Arnie. It looks like it was reissued in the 2010's with updated artwork and facts (RIP Pluto), so there might still be a few museums showing it, especially since there isn't a lot of planetarium stuff for the little ones.

Awww, hearing the theme song is bringing back all sorts of memories. I'd forgotten about the puppets besides Georgio, though. This was such a simple and wholesome show and it's one of the many reasons I grew up loving folksy tunes. (My mother's taste in music being another one.) Edit: The sandwich song! I remember a bouncier cover of that on some album whose name I forget but Fred's sounds nicer, lol. Edit ii: Well that sucks that the show's got no home media presence. I kind of had an underlying feeling since it's a slightly lesser known gem of Nick Jr., but still. :( This is the kind of show I'd love for my niece to be able to watch.

As a US/Canadian border kid, empathy oozing CBC kids shows are my jam. I always appreciated that it never felt like Penner was talking down to you. You were just existing in his "place". To this day, I still remember a quote where he got a letter from a kid asking "why do people stop growing when they're grownups?" And Fred's response was "Oh (insert kids name here). Adults and kids both grow, just in different ways. When you're a kid you grow like this (does a hand motion for getting taller). But adults grow like this (mimes his gut growing out sideways)." There was just enough cheekiness that you felt like you were part of the club.

Honestly, I was born in 1990 so I honestly just 'MISSED' having Fred Penner as a part of my childhood. But I can certainly appreciate what he's done. That and it was nice to see Holly Laroque mentioned. I'm sure a lot of people my age remember seeing her on 'Under the Umbrella' tree when Disney Channel played it here in the States. This was one of the few Nick Jr. shows that I just couldn't bring myself to watch as a then pre-teen. Between the singing and Penner's big friend's dad energy, I branded the show as "too kiddy" in my mind. Looking at it now, though, I definitely appreciate Penner's warmth and caring. Also, the idea of the music industry going after children's shows suddenly makes Kidz Bop make depressing sense. A sincere TV offering that wishes to nurture kids and just happens to use pop music covers? "Can't have that," says the music industry. "How about you stop so we can instead capitalist this up a bit for $19.99 a CD?"

Excellent presentation on Fred Penner’s Place, Greg. I don’t recall watching his show on Nick, but I have heard some of his songs. A bunch of his albums are available for streaming on Spotify and elsewhere. And hey, I also like Raffi. In regards to the guest Canadian children’s performers who appeared on Penner’s program, I wonder if Charlotte Diamond was ever seen on the show one time. She’s one of my favorite children’s singers next to Raffi, of course. Once again, good work on the Nick Knacks episode on Fred Penner.

I could never remember the name of the show. I was born in late 86 and live in the states, so my window was that short 4 years from 89-93. In the mid 2000’s I was a fan of a movie/tv website who had a writer who could provide you the name of things you couldn’t remember based on very little. I told him ‘kids show early 90s maybe late 80s, puppets, dude crawls through a hole in a tree’ and he got it. I haven’t forgotten since!

I also like the Sandwiches song, when I was a child I sang that song 24/7 for a long time. My parents thought it was my own song... I did the same thing with the Mario Sunshine song and they wrongfully thought I wrote my own music.

We didn't get cable until the early-mid 90s, so a lot this stuff has been new to me, but I'm pretty sure I would've loved this guy when I was a kid. I do have some very very vague memories of The Cat Came Back, so it's likely I had his music or at least a version of this song played to me in my Pre-K - early elementary school days.

What a wholesome piece. Hope we find some more footage someday. Also Nicky looks like Clifford from Muppets Tonight. Just look at the mouth and hair.

It's a shame there wasn't more sharing to Canadian and American shows (heck English language shows in general).

My brother & I have some full & partial episodes of Fred Penner's Place that were recorded on VHS tapes, but don't have them digitized. One has a first nations man (whose name I cannot think of right now) and another has Holly Laroque in a different episode than from the clips showed here. It really is sad that many Canadian children's tv show episodes: Fred Penner's Place, Under the Umbrella Tree, Mr Dressup, ect. have become lost media.

I knew from Twitter that you had found about 9 episodes of this show out of the 700-some that aired, so I figured it wouldn't be too quick to put this one together...but dang, is this the quickest turnaround time in Nick Knacks history?

Fred Penner has been appearing as an occasional guest star on a recent Canadian television series called Miss Persona. There are episodes on KZbin as well as on Peacock in the US and Amazon Prime in Canada.

Ninety-six episodes in three months?! And I thought James Brown was the hardest working man in showbusiness. It's a shame most of those episodes are lost. I too have fond memories of that show. I'd watch it before heading to kindergarten. They don't make them like that anymore.

I have a question for you I'm not totally sure how to phrase. You've taught me so much about Nickelodeon, I was never aware that there WAS much of a pre-nicktoons era to the network at all (my only knowledge was a vague outline of You Can't Do That on Television, I'd never even HEARD of Pinwheel before, being born in 2000 will do that to you). So here's the possibly awkwardly phrased question: Do you think that this pre nicktoons content will still make up the "meat" of the show after you've reached the post nicktoons era? There's just so much fun, obscure stuff here that I've never heard of that I can't imagine there are as many wonderful stories to tell and corners to excavate, heck I'd be hard pressed to imagine there are more nick shows AFTER nicktoons than before. Just a question I wanted to ask about how you view your channel and this show. Keep up the good work!

FWIW, the channel ran for 12 years before Nicktoons (14 if you count its time as Pinwheel), which premiered about 30 and a half years ago. I suspect that the density of obscure content will decrease, but not by more than half. I am about two and a half years older than the host of Nick Knacks and vaguely remember a few shows from the 1990s that didn't last long, like Bing.

Not surprising "Dusty's Treehouse" was mentioned around 17:00 as Fred Penner's Place was almost a Canadian version of the former or the precursor.
