The battery on my 2012 Prius C went out a couple years ago around the 250k mark. Local Fred Anderson dealership gave me a quote of around $4,300 to replace the battery so I went to a local mechanic to have it replaced for a little less. If the cost had been around $3,000 I would have had Fred Anderson replace it for the reasons cited in the video. Overall I love that car and it’s given me very little problems. I wish they still sold the Prius C in the USA, but they now sell it only in Asia and renamed it the Toyota Aqua. Once it finally conks out I’ll likely replace it with a non-hybrid RAV 4 because they get reasonably good mileage and the difference in mileage doesn’t seem worth the extra cost.

So…all that $$$ you saved on gas gets wiped out replacing the battery.
@hyedefinition10804 күн бұрын
@@AnotherPilot1not really. Did some quick math. Let's go conservative. Let's say a Camry Hybrid gives you 35MPG vs a non-Hybrid giving you 25. Divide those figures by avg yearly driving of 12k miles and the hybrid will save you roughly 140 gallons yearly. Times that by 10 and you end up saving 4200 in 10 years. IF the battery needs replacing, you're still saving 1200. Most don't need replacing in 10 years and having owned both the Hybrid and non-Hybrid Camry's the MPG diff between both cars is closer to 15, especially in the city. At the worst you're still saving some money. On average you're saving a lot of money.

@@michaelbiggins7533 no sir. Just an A-A comparison with fuel usage. Hybrids don't need to be charged, optional even on Plugin Hybrids (phev). It costs around 75c to charge a Prius Prime for an EV range of 25mi. But PHEVs cost more and IMO not worth it unless you commute a lot in the city.

@dr.danchallice388818 сағат бұрын
Yes. They turn into money pits. See, it's not just the battery. Once you start racking up the miles, you need to address the engine and all the things that require maintenance. The repairs of cars ect, simply put its another way of screwing money from the public who have been screwed enough. You just declare how costly the bits and pieces are to establish prices over the top. It is time to stop these people.

So $3000 -$5000 to replace a Toyota hybrid battery. I imagine the battery pack for a Highlander Hybrid or Lexus RX 350 Hybrid is larger and around $5000. Beats the hell out of an EV Kia battery pack at $50,000. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqOWnnmwnZV-ic0si=1ibb9HW4YTyyPXJ0

Nickel mh batteries are still a great choice... and they have a peculiarity that may suit Canadian buyers. They actually prefer temperatures that are not too hot, to start charging them. If they are too warm, they will not charge. But it's probably the same with the extreme cold too.... but I haven't tested or experienced temperature compatibility of various areas. I used to work for a security company, in a tropical hot area. The guys used to come to my place to get their batteries charged. You couldn't get them to start charging. So I would put the batteries in my home freezer for 20 to 30 minutes, then put them into the factory charger, and they would then fully charge. I would give them exchange fully charged batteries and they would leave me in peace, while the original batteries would fully charge up. I think you need to check battery charging characteristics and usage characteristics, if you live outside of say 5 to 25 degree Celsius (Centigrade) range. And that is a lot of areas.

@@colonelfustercluck486 my cars sit in an unheated garage,I have yet to have them sit outside,up here in N.D. -20F is normal winter. I did decades on the BNSF railroad,trying to start diesel equipment was a challenge. Had a guy who would take the propane to the oil pans of Detroit diesels to warm up the oil.My hybrids use 0w-16 the diesels were 15-40 oil back then,no synthetics like today.

@@philipeli1192 ... Hi, maybe we are talking at "cross purposes". You are mentioning combustion engines, and I am mentioning EV main batteries, which power an electric motor. I am saying just be sure that your electric battery will function in your cold conditions, and also at the high end of temperatures found in say North America. A lot of the batteries have a sweet spot (temperature range) to get them to charge. So in some conditions, they may not be for everyone. It's annoying when your battery won't charge because it's too hot or cold... and then what are you gunna do? You would be up the creek. I was not getting into lubrication for cold temperature area combustion engines.... But if you can get your hybrid petrol, or diesel engine going, well you can travel using that. But it doesn't mean that your main EV battery will charge, if their internal temperatures are too high, or low, within the battery package. (I am an electrical technician / electronic technician.... advanced trade qualified, with a particular interest in power supply systems, including a fair bit of time in an environment where the batteries wouldn't charge because of temperature that was outside the spec's (too hot this my case).... but the same happens when it gets too cold as well. Each circumstance is individual and different.

@@colonelfustercluck486 I trust Toyota they know a thing or two. I guess the warranty on these hi-volt batteries is 150k,regardless of type!
@colonelfustercluck4865 күн бұрын
@@philipeli1192 Oh, Toyota will know about them and tested them (the main batteries), but does the consumer know when they are pushing the limits, which their application for them..... which may be colder or hotter then what the usual market requires. That is where the problem is. And I would be cautious, if my application was borderline, regarding battery temperatures (due to the usual local weather and temperatures). I was watching the companion video to this, the one about how to make your E/V or hybrid main battery last longer.... and they emphasized proper battery temperature management.... anyway, that's worth watching too. Good luck.

I've been in a few of these hybrids, which are nothing like the real thing. They sound and drive like electrical appliances. Our Mazda straight-six diesel has sound and feel. Stop at the lights, and there's life with the pleasant sound of the engine idling. There is no driver engagement whatsoever with this hybrid junk, just a gosh dang cake mixer on wheels turning itself on and off all the time.

Let's stop this insanity with hybrid batteries and Li-Ion batteries for clown cars! Just buy a regular car and drive it sensibly ! ! !

Here's an idea, you do what you want to do and not denegrate others for doing the same thing. My PHEV saves ME $966 a year on average includung the charging cost. I can't lose money even if I need a new battery. And it has 455hp and 523 lb ft of torque. And 70% less emissions (EPA).
@LWRC3 күн бұрын
@billurban1581 Let the marketplace decide instead of having the government force this insanity down everyone's throats! For every advantage, there is an equal offsetting disadvantage and that certainly is true for energy conversion which is what we are talking about here. Batteries do not save the planet from an emissions stand point! So get off the high horse - we are all paying for your 'conveniences'!
@LWRC3 күн бұрын
@billurban1581 Here is an idea - people who don't understand the laws of thermodynamics shouldn't vote in politicians who force the battery nonesense down everyone's throats ! There probably are conveniences for your car but all that comes at a price! Just because there is little or no emissions, for 100% battery cars, doesn't mean they are completely pollution free! No such thing as a free lunch in energy conversion. Your cited 70% less emission is BS. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen on this planet. We live in a closed system!

@@LWRC I stand corrected, I meant to say “tailpipe emissions.” I don’t disagree with much of what you said 12 hours ago, and couldn’t agree more with you on “mandates.” But it’s different from “battery insanity and clown cars,” comments made a day ago. “Drive it sensibly” can mean something as simple as driving a hybrid car that doesn’t waste gas idling at a red-light, that doesn’t burn gas just to move it 50 or 500 feet. Sensible, even for a clown.

Hi from Australia. We have cold and heat where we live. I have owned and run three Prius over 21 years in hot/ humid climate and cold winters ( down to below freezing temperatures). None have had any mechanical or electrical problems and have only had logbook servicing. The current Prius is just over 6 years old and has only had a 12 volt battery replaced after nearly 5 years of use. Better than 98% of the hybrid batteries give no trouble and easily last 10-12 years. Get over the so called complications. Cheers.
