I'm surprised! This is wonderful! Freddie's honesty respected, appreciated.

Freddie was a funny guy and when he rarely gave interviews he was very honest and never tride to hide the problems within the band. He started to smoke around 1980 and stopped it when he was suffering from the AIDS and doctors advised him not to smoke. Freddie had a very controvarsial and complicated personality, but he always remained a shy, caring and loving person under his "Mercury coat".

Something else you might consider reaching to: There’s a 20-minute mini documentary on the making of the song “One Vision”… quite INTERESTING and FUN to see how the guys interact/work together.🖖 BTW… (SORRY I’m commenting so MUCH) Just an FYI, in case you’re considering reacting to Queen’s Live Aid set sometime: Recently, there was posted several copies of the Live Aid set video which are INCOMPLETE (part of the end is CUT OUT). Several reactors lately have sadly played the Live Aid performance, only to have the end missing. So, just FYI, THERE ARE. RELIABLE, COMPLETE versions on YT! Two of the channels with GOOD quality copies are: Mundo do Rock and Remastered Memories (Or just do a search based on highest viewer count/posted a year-or-longer ago.) SORRY again for the LONG comments!

HI GUYS! I could listen to Freddie talk FOREVER, he was such a fascinating intriguing person. Such a dry sense of humor and BIZARRELY humble. (Did you know… He told an interviewer once that the reason he quit taking piano lessons (he took piano from ages 8 to 12, I think) was because - in his words “I can’t really read sheet music.” To which the interviewer paused (I think the guy was in shock) and then asked “Sooo… You can’t read sheet music, but you have NO problem writing multi-layer harmonies?” (Like in “Bohemian Rhapsody”, something Freddie did a LOT, actually.)😂 Looking forward to part two!

Fortune, and the fact that .. well, he didn't exactly smoke for very long and started "late" in his life (as it turned out, sadly). At least he listened to his doctor after the AIDS diagnosis and stopped them, as they could mess with his body enough that the disease might have progressed much faster and made him even sicker which would have stopped him singing altogether quite a bit earlier than he actually stopped (relatively speaking).

I have a recollection of Freddie saying that he liked the way his voice sounded with the hoarseness from smoking cigarettes. Joni Mitchell also smoked and in later years her voice became very different because of it.

thanks for reactions to the interview. and yeah, even in the old days cigarettes are tobacco products. tobacco causes cancer. there ya go. But Freddie's interviews are great. Have you done any of his early ones? He's always funny, flirty, and charming.even when he's being sassy he peppers them with "dear, and darling".

Not for nothing but studies linked emphysema, Cancer & birth defects so strongly to smoking as far back as mid 60s. That the Surgeon General agreed to put the warning on Cig packs in 1967. Great interview.

Legendary interview with friend David Wigg, I believe. Have you seen actor John Blunt’s (brother of Emily and a guy who actually played Freddie convincingly) spoof on this? Hilarious and absolutely bang-on. Worth watching. 😄

Freddie's PA said he didn't inhale. Freddie was very nervous about interviews, he had to fidget, before Freddie started smoking he had other things in his hands to fidget with.

The cigarettes back in the day were just as bad as today. They would kill your ass just as easy back then as today. Smoking killed my Grandpa on my Dads side, 2 of my uncles, 1 aunt and my Gramdma on my Mom’s side who never smoked herself but worked in an office building back in the 50s and 60s where everyone on the floor smoked basically but her, and she got emphysema from that. So yeah, cigs were just as bad as now.

And here you have the truth on the solo work compared the Bohemian Rhapsody film version. Roger and Brian did theirs first. The movie has Freddie doing one only and leaving Queen. Making Freddie look a complete 4 letter word that Freddie couldn't say in this video. People say, it's only a film etc etc....yes, it is, but it was damaging to Freddie's reputation with half the things they had Freddie do. When all the band did them too. Freddie was not arrogant or egotistical or selfish. Other documentaries will have you see and hear the truth.

He actually smoked to change his voice, he wanted a stronger and versatile voice, that's why his voice changed towards the end of 1979 and even more so in the 80s.
