Freddie wrote the song, it was for the 92 Olympic games in Spain. Freddie passed in 91. There is a whole Opera album Freddie wrote and sung with Montserrat, called Barcelona. 🙂 We Queen fans know just about everything 😂

She is an opera legend from Spain, and he was a big fan. Singing with her was on his bucket list-- they met and hit it off and he wrote an album for her. This song was officially about meeting her in Barcelona, and was immediately sought after for the upcoming Olympics opening. He told her they needed to perform it/film it sooner, bc he knew he wouldn't make it to 1992. Truly epic.

It was the opening song for the Olympics 1992 but Freddie passed in 1991. She sang it with his voice on speakers. They became great friends they did a full album together. Great reaction to a masterpiece

Sadly Freddie Mercury never lived long enough to perform this song live for the Olympics in Barcelona 92, they met and he was hoping they'd share one duet and she asked him to write an entire album... so he did. My favorite Freddie and Monseratte song is How can I go on, the chemistry between these two musical anomalies is palpable. Monseratte and Aretha Franklin sang at Freddie's funeral, how pleased he would have been.

This song was HUGE in the UK - I remember it hitting number 1 in the charts back in the day. I'm surprised it never made it to the US. He and Montserrat became close friends afrerwards, and she was devastated when he passed.

I think that was during the '92 Olympics when the single was rereleased. The BBC used it a lot in their coverage. I believe it reached No.2 here in Ireland. Great memories of the song and those games.

Caballe was considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, sopranos of her time. My wife had her purse stolen while in a store off Las Ramblas. Otherwise yeah, Barcelona is great. Saw Queen in early '80's in Phoenix. Wonderful. Billy Squire opened for them.

When Freddie and Montserrat decided to make an album, she asked him to write a song about her hometown, Barcelona. This was a love song for Barcelona, and the two of them. She was one of only a handful of people who knew he was dying from AIDS. They truly cared for each other, and respected their talents.

Yes, diehard queen fans know about this. They did a whole album together. This was done for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. This was shown at them, because Freddie wasn't alive to be able to perform it. He passed away in 1991.

The video clip you showed of the spectacular and dramatic staging of this epic duet, was actually taken at the lavish celebrations to officially welcome the Olympic Flag to the city of Barcelona, which was to host The Summer Olympics in 1992. The celebrations took place at the "La Nit" Centro de Cultura in the city, in October of 1988, hence the "anomaly" you referred to. In addition it was to become the cities' official anthem for the 1992 games and many claim the best ever. When the proposed musical collaboration between the two superstars was first learned of, it was greeted with scepticism, even ridicule by their detractors, forecasting that the collaboration would not end well for either. To combine two such dramatically different types of music as heavy rock and grand opera, had never been done even with such legends as Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe, considered to be, for her vocal control and the purity of her notes, to be one of the greatest operatic "divas"(I use the term in it's original meaning here) of all time. Pavarotti even went so far as to accuse Montserrat of betraying her operatic heritage..! Yet nobody had realised their shared dedication to exploring different musical genres, nor their deep devoted friendship and certainly not, Freddie's genius for composition, aided in this instance by his musical maestro Mike Moran. Thankfully all involved ignored the condemnation of the project and were determined to proceed. When it was first performed publicly at the prestigious "Ku Club" on the island of Ibiza, it was met with instant rapturous acclaim. Freddie and Montserrat had not only succeeded they had done so in such a dramatic manner as to silence their detractors forever.. Sadly both have now passed, yet thanks to technology we can still enjoy even thrill to, this epic masterpiece 37 years on.. Freddie once said to "Montsy" his affectionate nickname for her that, "Music does not recognise age.."! How true that seems now after so many years....!!

This event was a celebration of the olympic flag that arrived fro Seoul to Barcelona to the forthcoming Olympic Games in 92. You can find 2 more beautiful and very different songs of Freddie and Montserrat at the sam event, The Golden Boy and How Can I Go On. Montserrat Caballé was one of the greatest sopranos in the last century and she and Freddie got on well very quickly and became friends, they adored each other. Freddie and his co-writer friend Mike Moran completed a full duet album.

1992 Olympics in Spain and when I watched that Olympics as I have watched ALL Olympics beginning when I can watch TV. My aunt lives in Spain and this is Spain's ANTHEM. National Anthem is played but this is considered to be played way more then their own National Anthem. When this is played, my Aunt says it is 101% Epic because in Spain, the world stops and everyone in Spain sings to this even if it is just playing at a local pub.

I did know about this… absolutely love it… her voice is amazing!! … Freddie and Montsy were the first ever opera/rock combo…others have done since and many asked Montsy to perform with them after this but when you hear the interviews about her friendship with Freddie, it is no surprise that she didn’t perform with anyone else in this vein. ….. My recommendation- you might want to listen to “exercises in free love” by Freddie followed immediately by Ensueno by Freddie and Montsy . The first is Freddie’s demo to Montsy to demonstrate what he wanted her to sing and the latter is the final version. Very very impressive ❤

Freddie had long admired Montserrat.. and he wrote not only this song, but an entire album that they recorded together.. some other fantastic songs are "How can I Go On" (my particular favorite) and "The Golden Boy" - they were so in love and loved working together - she said that Fred showed her it was okay to just have fun, and not be perfect.. although Montsy (as Freddie called her) was world-known as a superior singer of opera.. please look at some of their other collaborations when you have time & inclination!

Speeking of "traveling back in time" and amazing opera-voices you should check out "the three tenors" (Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo) and their concert on July, 7th in 1990 in Rome. It was at the evening before the final of the FIFA World Championship (soccer) in Italy. Pick any song of that concert - you can't go wrong.

Freddy buscó a Montserrat porqué la vio n una opera y se enamoró de ella y queria hacer un disco con ella.quedaron y la quimica exploto.se hicieron grandes amigos y confidentes.de echo Montserrat fue d las pocas personas que sabia que tenia sida y que le quedaba poco de vida.en 4 dias entre los dos crearon este gran disco y de echo ella quedó devastada tras morir Freddy.
