The Madman and His Heart The world was no mystery Complications did not exist I never imagined the damage Could run so deep. I lived for success, And behind me marched The army of revolt, Of those I had brought down. They could do nothing While I stood at my peak, Calmly awaiting The day of my fall. Their strength grew so vast That even from afar I felt it; My mind began to rave, And my heart could not endure. Mad screams! They bled through my ears! I was reduced to nothing, To the point of seeing my humanity. Parameters extinguished, I had to relearn it all. Nothing within me worked, Yet life still called my name. I know I am protected. Pain and cold no longer touch me. I do not fear humiliation, Alone, with my heart. Author's Insight: The "Army of Revolt" represents the minds of those harmed by the speaker, and even the spirits of those who died as a result of his actions. This army grows and ultimately causes his downfall, attacking him to the point of stripping away his identity and parameters. Yet, this aggression becomes the catalyst for him to rediscover his humanity-something that cannot be harmed. When life calls him back, it is to be reborn, even though he seems utterly unprepared for it. He is reborn with severe emotional and cognitive scars but faces the world with courage and resignation. Guided by higher spirits, he holds onto the certainty that he will never lose his greatest treasure: his heart.
