To explain this I'm using a piano for an example, so middle C is C4 which is the note at the center of a piano, and going to the left is lower so C3, C2, C1. Going up would be C5, C6, C7. The notes go up or down one octave or 8 notes. On a scale, there is A, B, C, D, E, F, G. and they each have a flat which looks like ♭and a sharp which looks like ♯. Basically, C#5 is the C sharp 1 octave up from the middle C.

Full voice only (not falsetto like a counter-tenor). Fantastic compilation and analysis! Roger can sing higher than Freddie, in falsetto, as we all saw in the move depicting scenes of recording BR. NO OTHER ROCK STAR sings better, in full voice, than FM could sing, including Gillan, Neely, and Anderson. FM knew a few opera tenors, too, who have even stronger voices - YES! A few guys can (properly) belt it out (full voice, unhindered or strained, straight tone, no vibrato) across a 5+ octave range. Pavarotti, for instance. Singers like these don’t need autotune, either. When i asked my mentor what his favorite instrument is, long ago he answered: The human voice.

I wonder where Exercises in Free Love would be ranked. To be honest, I do not care how high or low he can go. This is not the Olympics. If you check the numbers Pavarotti could always go higher than Placido Domingo but it was the latter that I enjoy the most. Do you enjoy listening to Freddie? If yes, then case is closed. @@freddiewilliam8797 Freddie was not baritone, this video proves it, if anything he is clearly a tenor. You determine voice type by using full chest voice, he sang an E5 note in full chest voice, that is not a baritone. Most tenors cannot even sing E5 notes in full chest voice. You usually start counting high notes from G4 or G#4 because that is in the tenor range. It is an easy note for a tenor to sing, there are thousands of examples of Freddie singing these notes. Actually you do sometimes see tenors struggling with this note because it is right on their passaggio.
@MultiKamil97
@MultiKamil97 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZENOBlAmusic I think that Freddie's voice is hard to determine because it changed so much throughout the years. He started with a light, kinda feminine tenor voice but as the years went by his voice started to get darker, heavier and lower. The reason for it was of course age but also the fact, that Freddie was a heavy smoker and used to drink a lot. Later he got vocal nodules so it changed his voice even more. That's why many people may think that later in his career he was a baritone. In my opinion, he was a natural tenor, who became a baritone because of the changes that occured in his voice.
@ZENOBlAmusic
@ZENOBlAmusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@MultiKamil97 It is difficult because there are often wrongful or misleading information available about voice types. For male voices you can just use full chest voice, without mixed voice. That correlates best with the Fach system which is obviously based on opera. Male voices can change a lot, it can change until the age of 40. Freddie had a light pitch with high frequencies when he was younger, he gained more depth, fulness and richness, but his voice never became lower, it actually became higher. Freddie generally sang higher in the 80's with the heavier voice, his voice just had a lot of lower frequencies which makes it sound lower, then what it might really be. Freddie's full chest range without head voice or mixed voice, is around G2 - E5. Baritones cannot sing that high in full chest voice, without mixed. Most tenors cannot even sing that high in full chest voice. Some tenors would struggle to hit a C5 without mixed voice. You get a few different tenors, and a few different baritones. In tenors the power in their voices lies in the middle to upper register. With baritones their power lies their middle to lower registers. That is important to understand. You do get different sub categories, of voices. To determine the subcategory of the voice, you look at the weight of the voice, the depth and colour of the voice. The highest tenors have very light and agile voices, they actually sing in the female contralto range on some notes. The most common tenors are lyric tenors, seriously 99,9% of tenors in popular music are lyric tenors. Freddie started out as a lyric tenor, which is not uncommon. Lyric tenors have bright and sometimes warm voices with easy top ends. Then you get the heavier voiced tenors. They have bigger voices, with deeper, darker and lower qualities. You firstly get the Spinto tenor, spinto means pushed. It is a tenor with a bigger voice then a lyric tenor. But they can still sometimes sing as lyric tenor as well, but they often push their voices into a dramatic sound. Spinto voices does have a lot of colour. You don't really see them in popular music, but they are extremely popular in opera, this might be the most popular tenor voice in opera, some of the best known tenor parts, are spinto tenor arias. Dramatic tenors have very big loud and large voices. They have less nuance in the voice then a spinto. Sometimes some tenors begin as spinto tenors and their develop into full dramatic tenors. Spinto and dramtic tenors are often mistaken for bariotnes, becuase people will just sometimes hear a deep, heavier and darker voice, and they would assume that it must be a baritone. Freddie was a spinto tenor. He fits the characteristics perfectly. It is grand type of voice, and because of the weight of the voice, spinto tenors can sing a few lower notes quite well. A characteristic that only spinto and dramatic tenors (and sopranos) have is that they have a sharpness in their voice. In opera it is called having metal in the voice. I have seen people refer to Freddie's laser voice. He had that sharpness. Rosalind Plowright (opera singer) describes a Spinto voice as one that has the tonal colour of the voice type one step lower their own range. That means, a voice within the tenor range but with a baritone's colour, that is her the description of a Spinto. Here is a video that does a good job of describing spinto and dramatic tenors: But here is a better comparison between a lyric tenor - Pavarotti and a Spinto tenor Franco Corelli: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqTCgXp4msSjnJI [In opera only Spinto tenors can really use mezza di voce, which means you can make your voice softer and louder. (you can hear it on "spendera" in this video) It is a voice that use a lot of different dynamics.] So how do we translate this to Freddie. I think this song is a great example, Freddie starts off on the lower side, there are some c#3 notes which is low for a tenor, for a baritone it is a very easy note. he does the C#3 note around 0:53. In he first section of the song there is some lower singing, Freddie sounds fine, but in the middle from around 0:57, as soon as he start hitting the higher notes, his voice gains volume, power and resonance. He also has that sharp pitch of a spinto tenor. At around 1:10 he sings lower again he loses the volume and resonance. Is This The World We Created live at Wembley: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYTLcoOOd516l6c The whole song constantly goes from high to low. I think if you listen to it carefully a few times, you will notice how Freddie's voice wants to up. High notes naturally has more volume, but not everyone can sing those high notes with that amount of volume and power that Freddie had. And is a trade of a tenor) Baritones have sub categories. Baritone voices goes from lighter and higher to heavier, lower and darker. The highest baritones are lyric baritones, they have light and agile voices, as baritones they tend to have more mellow voices. A baritone voice works in the opposite direction, they have power and resonance on low notes. Here is an example of a lyric baritone in popular music, Scott Hoying from Pentatonix: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ham8dGZ7qd1ppsk You only have to listen to 2:10, it is a light sounding voice. His high notes there was slightly lower then the notes from Freddie in is this the world we created. But you can hear that it is much lighter and thinner sound. Another lytic baritone John Legend: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWKblH2np6d8hc0 When people say Freddie is not tenor, he at the very least has to be a high or lyric baritone, because his voice and general singing is to high. But Freddie's voice really does not fit into that of a lyric baritone. It is a light voice with mellow sounds, more comparable to a lyric tenor in sound. The heavier voiced tenors does have voices that can easily sound heavier and deeper then some baritones. People don't understand how different the voices within the same Fach can sound, they can sometimes be at opposite ends. A lot of people don't realize that you get different sounding baritones, some with light and higher voices and some with heavier and dark voices. If you have the right information it is actually very easy to determine Freddie's voice type. Here is Freddie's vocal range Wembley 1986, when his voice was at his darkest, and he was sick at this concert as well with a cold. Yet he is still belting out high notes in full chest voice, above the baritone range. He basically avoids low notes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZnWhYKch7F1o68 Not all of the notes are 100% correct and there are some missing, but you can get the idea. Interestingly enough, I think Marc Martel might be lyric baritone, one way in which you can quickly hear the difference between Marc Martel and Freddie's voice is that Freddie's voice always sounds sharper. He also does not have the same power and volume in his voice that Freddie had in the 80's. His high notes are very thin. He sings in full falsetto from C5. His full chest voice is quite a bit lower then Freddie's full chest voice. He can sing some easier 70's Queen songs quite well, but he cannot really replicate the 80's songs very well.

@josephoshea4342
@josephoshea4342 3 жыл бұрын
@@CookieFXTM12 First off Adam is obviously a tenor. Second off, Freddie literally said he was a baritone. All opera repertoire he learned was baritone rep. I suggest you go watch some of his interviews on him performing opera, it’s very informing. Also, f5 is definitely very difficult to sing in modal voice. Pavarotti rarely sang that high in modal voice and was a tenor. Freddie’s secondo passaggio very obviously laid in between midC - E4, his turn was at F4. He could carry a mix of chest and head resonance up until Ab4, which is very impressive for a baritone, and even stay in modal voice up to a high c (albeit very squeezed). After that, it was all reinforced falsetto. A baritone singing as high as this video says in “full voice” (modal voice) is not only questionable, it is scientifically impossible.

@@josephoshea4342 Freddie's natural timbre is as sharp as a child's, see him singing in 1973 before he has vocal problems, calling him a baritone is crazy kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6KzaauCe5iHe5Y his voice changed with time, he smoked a lot, and if you read Queen's tour diaries, on all tours he had pharyngitis problems, nodules in his throat, Freddie didn't take care of his vocal health, he had routine at parties, his voice gradually eroded until he sounded like a baritone, a good example is listening to Bohemian Rhapsody, if you hear the 1986 versions, it sounds deep, more like a baritone, but his natural voice, with few changes, in 1976 shows a !childlike" voice, see kzbin.info/www/bejne/emPJmHmdoceVZ8k and I doubt that a baritone can sing the same notes that Montserrat Caballé sings, see Freddie singing as a soprano in Exercises in Free Love kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2nHYmV7bpydi9UT=12 Now about your high notes in full voice, see it going from B4 to C#5 kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmmle6p-l6yFr9E it is clearly visible that it is full voice, this distortion used is not it is possible to be used in falsetto or head voice, you know, it sounds very different, see going up to a D5, and reproducing that D5, I believe this is the best example that is not falsetto kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5yapIqhatifaaM now see E5 in full voice, there is no break for falsetto, it is a mixed voice kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpKodnd9mc95pLM different from this vocal, where it goes up to C#5 in full voice, but to go up to F#5 it breaks with the falsetto, see kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZjMk2uHpKd-fqc this Freddie uses falsetto/headvoice support because it was out of range in a full voice

Not bashing Dimash, he's insanely talented and has a beautiful voice, but literally all of his high notes are wide open vowel shapes, completely ignoring consonants and full pronunciation, and use little to no articulations. It's almost apples to oranges comparing him to a great rock style singer who's fully pronouncing his words, doing all sorts of mouth shapes word by word, whilst jumping between resgisters.

What do you mean "full voice"? Full Chest voice? The Eb5 and F are mixed voice in my humble opinion. Falsetto, well supported and belted out. The E5 in another one bites the dust sounds like full chest and is in fact, the most impressive in my view. Freddie never liked using mixed voice. It was chest or falsetto. I think in the end, he succumbed to having to. He prob lost some oomph, for obvious reasons and adapted...very very well by the way. Theres also a very impressive D5(i think)in "Rock it(prime jive)"
@RobertMatlock
@RobertMatlock 3 жыл бұрын
Full voice would refer to anything that fully engages the vocal folds, as in chest or head voice. Mixed voice isn't a vocal register, you sing chest voice until you hit your passaggio, then you're in head voice. Mixed voice is simply using both chest and head voice in and around your passaggio without breaking, saying he used "mixed voice" to hit an F5 doesn't make sense, he was 100% in head voice. What you're hearing is distortion, which is in a world of it's own. Falsetto is created by a completely different process as it doesn't fully engage your vocal cords and really shouldn't be factored in to your "range".
@psircos
@psircos 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobertMatlock sorry, just read it back. I meant to write head voice, not mixed. I thought Falsetto was just a term used for the 'airy' soft sweet part at the top of your range. Compressing it and supporting it gives a fuller sound which, when worked at, can be made to sound alot like chest voice. Whilst my break is around F#4, my falsetto can go below that by several semitones...prob a D4. Despite my break being where it is, my chest voice will do a B4, if warmed up properly. I don't think you can just omit falsetto from your range. When you listen to "exercises in free love", you cant just say that wasnt part of Freddie's range.
@ZENOBlAmusic
@ZENOBlAmusic 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. I think people should definitely make a divide between full chest voice and mixed voice or head voice. For me mixed voice is not chest voice, it usually sounds very light, these days people stretch it as far as possible to almost turn it into a whisper. Freddie could reasonably sing around D5 in full chest voice. That is extremely high for full chest voice. But by the end of his life he lost the power in his voice to sing those full chest voice notes, and he had to use head voice or mixed voice.
@ZENOBlAmusic
@ZENOBlAmusic 3 жыл бұрын
Head voice and mixed are the same thing, people use it interchangeably these days. It is when you use a mixture of falsetto (head resonance) and chest voice, to create a sound that is closer to your chest voice. In actual classical terms men don't have head voice, only women use head voice, and men use falsetto. These differences are important if you want to determine your voice type. If you want to understand what you voice type is, as a male, you can only use the range in your full chest voice to determine your voice type, along with your break or passaggio.
