Listening to you, Freddie saying that your #1 Bike is the RE C350cc made me almost cry !! of joy ..... I follow you since ever and You are one of the main reasons I, owning a T120 for road use, to buy a C350cc for whjile commuting in a urban environment .... And rest asure that, even still loving my T120, I always awake up in the morning happy because I will ride my C350 .. she is laizy, noisy, but makes me smile every single morning ... it´s rides smoothly, nice engine roar, fuel efficient and with this gorgeous looks .. and NO, I would never trade her for a T Speed 400 .... Bought it a month ago, and it is my first bike. Capable and enjoyable. In our country there's a number of riders that owned this bike because 400cc bike is the minimum requirement to get through in and out via expressways. It's a value for money if you ask me.

Actually Freddie Harley has actually released a 400cc motorcycle in India in collaboration with Hero Motocorp... it's called the x440.. it's a single cylinder based on the design of the Harley XR1200X

Hi Freddie, I think you’ll enjoy the Speed 400 . I test rode the Triumph 400 and the RE Guerrilla and liked them both, I previously had a Meteor 350, Himalayan 411 and before that a Bullet 500 efi. I’ve ended up buying a Kawasaki Eliminator 500se (which is a 451cc parallel twin) it has slightly more power at 45bhp and more torque than the Guerrilla and is only 174kg so lighter too. Although it’s cruiser styled it has mid mounted foot pegs, handles very well and has a very un criuser like engine that likes to rev. It’s a bit more expensive at £6400 but monthly pcp payments are the same as the £4850 base model Guerrilla due in part to Kawasaki’s £500 deposit contribution. We are in a nice position at the present time with so many great sub 500cc machines available to buy.

I own a New Age Classic 350, and as much as I hate the clutch, it still surprises me how versatile it can be. Hustle, and it keeps up; slow stroll, and it makes it worthwhile. It's like a Labrador who would sit and play or run with me across the meadows. When I park it and sip my tea at the side of the road, I admire it as if I want to own it all over again.

I bought one in black, it really is a great bike to ride. Being a short, small and not very strong lady, I like like my bikes to be small and light. I have a Kawasaki Z400 as well as a Honda Monkey 125. It feels decadent to have three bike until I realised I paid less for all three, then it cost for my husband's Ducati Monster SP. The Kawasaki is a really great fun bike to ride and very different in character to the Speed 400, I ride the speed with my husband when his is on his Royal Enfield Interceptor and the Z400 when he rides the Monster. The Monkey I use for runs to the shop and errands, it is a fantastic little bike.

Here's the truth of the matter, Freddie...smaller displacement motorcycles are more fun and efficient! Unless you are doing major miles on the motorway, how much power and an overweight bike do you really need? You can work the powerband with the clutch which makes it more engaging to ride. It's a wonderful bike.

I second that. I currently own a F850GS and it is not a fast bike, below 900cc and my best frient who is an excellent rider has his fourth SV650. even though he has -30 HP compared to my already not fast bike, we ride the same speed and on normal roads, you would not want to go any faster without either loosing your licence or life. Even on the highway in europe i can cruise at 160 kph in Germany and it feels fine...but really, we did 4000km in Croatia last year and only 200 were on highways. I love large and fast bikes but a good small bike with 40-70 hp, good brakes and a good suspension/tyres is all you really need.

I pre-ordered my Triumph Speed 400 and waited like a child for Christmas all winter, and I only have 2 things I wish were different. 1 The front gearing is too small, I don't care if I lose a bit from 0 to X, but 1st gear is almost useless as it comes stock. 2 Triumph should have put the same footpegs on as the 400 X as the seating position, on longer trips, gets a little cramped for me at least on the speed 400 (I'm the same height as Freddie)

@@LostYogi absolutely agree about 1st gear. The whole box needs to be one gear higher - lose 1st and add 7th. Motor is too vibey also.

Great review Freddie. I've admittedly been skeptical about the sub 600cc bikes. But today I test rode a Guerilla whilst waiting for new tyres to be fitted on my sportster forty eight. And wow, what a bike. So much fun around town, and I took it on the motorway and it had no trouble at 70+. I'm officially a convert and will be looking to add one of these smaller capacity bikes to the stable.

I test ride one a few months back. Great bike. Very small feeling and suits shorter riders really well. Not crazy power but definitely enough to have fun. Only mod that it really needs is taller gearing which I think the motor could handle due to enough power. Easy change of the sprocket and maybe a little windshield.

The new speed 400 MY25 has just been launched. No new update to the engine, but it does come with verdestein wheels, thicker tyres, higher seat height, and adjustable Brake and clutch levers. Edit: the exhaust has been powder coated, but the new colors are decent.

The last small capacity bikes (350cc) built by Triumph at Meriden were 1968 Tiger 90's, with the 250's being badge engineered BSA's. The few 350 ohc Bandit and Fury models from 1971 were built at BSA and only as prototypes.

you are so right about the universal desirability part, there are a lot of cool vehicles out there, but there have been just a handful that are wanted and achieveable by basically everyone and that is truly special. The Classic 350 is a great example, I don't think there's a single bike enthusiast that looks at it and doesn't think it is a gorgeous thing.

I did what Freddie said was happening, my big heavy bikes have gone and I now have just one small 400 twin. I considered the Triumph but struggled to get a good P/X deal as the bikes hadn't been released but got a good deal against an immaculate used Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, happy days.

400s are extremely popular in Hong Kong - I think because of the size of bikes and economy - the Honda 400 was hugely popular across Asia in 80s and 90s. Now there are a lot of scooters that make sense in cities like HK, Ho Chi Min and Bangkok, but I see this Triumph being popular.

Triumph also made a 350cc vertical twin in the 60's. A friend had one and it was HORRIBLE. For some reason his bike was extremely top heavy unlike the 500 Daytona it was based on. Maybe his was a trials version but I didn't dare to ride it.

Funny how time and tastes change. Yamaha brought out a 660cc roadsters in 06/07 called the MT03. Not retro style but a cracking simple, fun thumper with a lovely exhaust note, lots of grunts and big smiles per mile........and almost nobody bought it! One of the best bikes I ever owned.

I had a go on the Triumph 400X at Dorthey's Speed shop a couple of weekends ago and quite liked it. If you want to test ride bikes with those similar CC's then contact Nathan at Dorothy's Speed Shop, I had a great day riding round North Devon for the day. I tried the new Himalayan, Honda CRF 300 Rally, the CFMoto 450MT to mention a few. He has many including the BMW G 310 GS. My favorite was the CFMoto by far.

Been riding and owning motorcycles last 30 years , presently riding the interceptor 650 last 5 years , I booked the Triumph speed 400 and the Scrambler 400X but wasn't convinced somehow , meanwhile after repeated test rides of the classic 350 and bullet 350 for almost 1 year bought the new iconic standard black Bullet 350 ,its got loads of character and runs like a mechanical swiss watch,by far one of the best motorcycle i have had in years.Cheers

@johnanderson3412 The Classic 350 has complete different character compared to the Interceptor, though it may feel a bit underpowered on highways speeds but it has a unique character which is addictive puts a smile on your face everytime.To be honest I now reach out to ride the Classic /Bullet 350 more than the interceptor especially city and back roads , it's got a wonderful character, and awesome long stroke low down torque available in any gear.in other words the Classic 350 compliments the Interceptor 650 to complete the pair,according to me, you can't just have one cos you will miss the other, Take multiple test rides back to back Classic 350 vs Interceptor and go with no expectations you'll be surprised I'm sure Hope it helps you decide .Cheers

It is a long stroke engine with ample low down torque available in any gear. I find it more characterful than the interceptor for city and back roads.Very relaxed engine to potter around town, The interceptor and Classic 350 make a great pair but you'll miss the other if you just keep one.,it's best to take test rides back to back Interceptor vs Classic 350 to get a clear idea and feel.Hope this helps you in your decision. Small cc, large cc, I've just sold my RE Himmy 411, great bike for smiles, and bought the mid point classic.. the Interceptor 650. Personal opinion is it sits just in the right place. Not too much of anything, power, torque, cost.. just in a sweet spot for value, smiles, and retro cool. Bit of a head turner as well.

Got mixed in with a big group of bikers a couple of weeks ago and one was one an identical Speed 400. It looked superb in motion; better than it does on screen (no slight against yours and Monika’s video-making of course, I mean every photo/video - some bikes just look better in the flesh 😁). Anyway, my point. You mentioned Harley and BMW not being in on this. Just watched Mr Darcy and The Old Man episode in Kyoto (Honda CB350 episode), where he visits a Harley dealership and they have 500X and 350X. So these bikes even exist, and could/would be very popular here. And a mini R nine T would, I’m sure, do big numbers.

What I will say next is not in any way negative criticism but I would like to be direct, imo the only thing I miss in your videos, that would elevate them to the next level is some silence with just the engine and the road maybe that is not in your concept but as a non biker/future biker Pov moments with just the engine are just a delight. Well Freddie you seem enamoured with the speed though moreso with a classic 350 (overchromed for my taste Hunters more my taste). I put a deposit on one in Nov test rode in Feb picked blue and finally took delivery mid April I use it for a 35 mile nice dsy commute on twisty B roads which its very nice for. Just the right amountbof go for my skill level does 210 miles on a tank so that's 3 return journeys, rides nicely plenty of grip, looks good, sounds nice, simple easy instruments, too nice long service interval if thats a thing theres a dealer in my city with a nice attached cafe. Is it perfect no product is accessories are arriving at a snails pace finally got my screen after 5 months, gearing esp 1st too low no simple sprocket swap currently, i find it a bit jerky on and off throttle in low gears, the speedo & mpg are very optomistic, the chains on the wrong side hidden nicely, no centrestand and no easy bobbin mount either, the mudguards are not long enough the radiator takes a lot of road grime, could do with a touri g screen as that wind blast at 70+ is an issue. But overall it was the best available bike for me at the time and its really nice to bimble along a twisty road upon. My suggestion for you is to comparison test it and RE Goerilla back to back asvit answers a number of the foibles of the speed. Cheers.

Interesting! I can tell by my audience demographics that youngsters LOVE these bikes (Enfields and the Speed 400 etc). Interestingly, and purely going on my KZbin stats, under 40s have very close to zero interest in big adv bikes (Ducati Multistradas)

I was very seriously looking at getting this bike (actually the scram 400 model) as my first bike earlier this year, but I wasn’t fond of the speedometer and it’s lack of symmetry, and the biggest thing is the gold forks. I find they do not match the bike at all and when you look at the bike they just jump out and I can’t look a way from them. And as a result I bough a 2024 Interceptor and love it through and through so far.

@@longjonwhite Hahaha that's funny af :D Apparently Triumph India's service center doesn't know much about valves except to say this is "normal" I'm just going to ride it and try to filter out the valve noise in the hope that the shims wear out and I get it to sound "normal"

I also loved my 350 classic. Now have a Honda 350ADV so good at everything even on the motorway! Load's of under seat storage and handles so good it keeps up with big bike's on the lanes.

Even BMW made a 300cc bike in a joint effort with another Indian company TVS motors. Now they have 3 bikes on the same platform G310r, G310gs and G310rr. You could say they did ok as between 2018 to mid 2022 they sold around 13000 units of 310r and 310gs combined in India. Pricing and quality led to lower sales in India and it couldn't pick up like the Speed 400.

Seems like a good looking motorbike with the exception of the thing that many bikes seem let down by the number plate mount. Why are so many motorbikes sold with any ugly great stick at the back?

It's a standards thing, the number plate has to be the furthest back. And that's why the tail-tidy industry is so busy.

Blame the governments, it's their crap rules unfortunately. However some manufacturers do it slightly nicer with swingarm mounted plates and mudguards IMO.

You’ve hit the nail on the head Freddie. Bikes have been getting heavier generally over the last twenty years, principally because emissions regs have mandated bigger and heavier exhaust systems and bigger engines to maintain power. It’s almost impossible to find a decent mid capacity bike under 200Kg - the comparatively small engine Himalayan is 196Kg, as are the CF Moto 450 MT and Honda NX500. This is 170Kg wet - still not a real lightweight but that means the 40hp punches a lot harder. Triumph/Bajaj can’t make them fast enough at the moment.

One of my friends tried to trade in a Tiger for something smaller and the dealers said they didnt want any more large bikes. Hahaha he is discovering what I with my cb 500s discovered a while ago, got rid of K 100 LT and kept the cb, all the bike I need really , week away or a day or a weekend does it all well and a lot of fun. Oh and I can pick it up, though this one does not drop.😂

Totally agree with your observations of moving to smaller bike, I’ve just gone from a Triumph Tiger 900 to a CF Moto 450MT, it was going to be a 400X but then I tried the CF Moto, it’s an awesome bike.

Pedant note. The 1968/9 Triumph Trophy was 250cc not 200. It's brother was The BSA 250cc Barracuda/Starfire.

OK, Freddie, I wish you well with your Triumph Speed 400, it looks great in blue. From 1979 until 1985 BMW produced an R45 boxer twin, it was basically an R65 sleeved down to 453cc, it was heavy, sluggish (95mph), low on power (35hp @ 7250rpm) and needless to say, it was expensive. Harley-Davidson do currently manufacture a lightweight motorcycle, the H-D X440 single cylinder model. There is talk of a new BSA 350cc "Bantam", we will have to wait and see if that appears in 2025. Thereb is a big demand for 350cc motorcycles in India and the rest of South East Asia.

If you live in an urban area no matter how much money you got, you can't get anything better looking than this or anything more fun to drive(very biased for sure)or anything more comfortable than this. And that makes classic 350 so much special. When you are on it you know there is nothing better than this out there. I've ridden almost everything from top to bottom but nothing like this. (Not applicable if you live in usa, anything less than 650cc feels under powered there if you drive in a not so legal manner, and yes I'm still talking about inside city)

Harley Davidson did launch the x440 in collaboration with HERO Motocorp around the same time when speed 400 was launched last year. But it only made it to the garages of Harley lovers with a small budget. Since the speed 400 was way reasonable and feature rich option. Also the Harley has too many variants , whereas the speed 400 had only 1 variant. ( Not talking about colour options)😅

Hi Freddie, thanks again for the great content. I love how your reviews are always more than just facts & figures. They give an insight into how a bike makes you feel which is refreshing to hear. I have a question for you as a fellow Triumph lover…how do you compare the new 400 bikes with the old Street Twin 900? I have owned a Street Twin and deeply regret selling it and was wondering why you would choose a Speed 400 (apart from it being a new bike) over a second hand Street Twin 900 with low mileage for similar money? When I sat on a Speed 400 at the Scottish Motorbike show, I thought the quality of the parts and feel of the switchgear was nowhere near as good as the Street Twin. Both are excellent bikes, would just be good to hear your thoughts. Cheers 👍🏼

I've ridden 6,500 miles on my Speed 400. Recently completed a 2,300 mile camping trip to Germany. It's a fabulous machine coping easily with all roads types including the autobahn. The engine is an absolute peach.

Really love my new Scrambler 400X, I agree with others, the gearing is way too short. Front brake rotor is already warped at 250 miles in. Otherwise, I love this bike.

I was looking at this as a beginner bike for myself, but was shocked how tall the seat is, considering the target audience. Felt significantly taller than the Speed Twin 900. I'll have to look at something else as a result.
