Good choice Freddie. I just got myself a Merlin Nomad jacket from Urban Rider, very happy, and will go well with that Interceptor that I picket up after our chat in Vilnius. Similar dilemma in regards to gear for my partner - Knox is also on my list as a possibly best solution. As for ByCity helmets, I have the Roadster. Looks great, and the lining is nice, but other than that - I regret it. After all, the main purpose of a helmet is to protect that brain of ours. The helmets from this brand will adhere to 22.05, but nothing more beyond that, and it's a very weak standard. Safety first. Looking at Arai and Shoei instead, they have attractive and safe options that also come with Pinlock and visors that won't leak. To that end, the Heron helmet you saw is actually on a similar level as ByCity. Cheers, stay warm and safe.

This is absolutely fascinating regarding the helmets, Roman- I read this with huge interest. Fantastic to hear from you and great to hear you rate the Merlin jacket- they have a lot of people praising them at the moment🖤 I’ll pin this comment as it’s very useful, and I’m sending you all my best in Lithuania🙂🇱🇹

That’s a little disappointing to hear - I spent £240 or so buying the carbon fibre version from Urban Rider when it was new. I would have hoped the safety was pretty good! Because otherwise it’s an extremely lightweight, comfortable and stylish helmet
@romanasnaryskin2871
@romanasnaryskin2871 Жыл бұрын
@@93nicd Carbon is lighter, it's not safer by any means than a composite shell. The question here is how far do companies go to test and develop the helmets to actually be safe, rather than just adhere to an existing standard, most of which are extremely low. DOT is like wearing a plastic bag on your head. ECE 22.05 is a little better, but still very basic and involves essentially one scenario. Snell is.. for cars. FIM is thorough, but few helmets have it, and those that do are extremely expensive - it's a racing standard. 22.06 seems to improve things considerably over current ECE, but is so new, again, few helmets have it, it's not mandatory before 2024.

Agree Monika would be a good ambassador. Motorcycle brands do sponsor females, but it seems to be females who ride and have their own channel, e.g. Revitt sponsor Itchy Boots. They send her summer and winter gear. I think Usernamekate also has gear sent to her. Maybe the fact that Monika is mostly behind the camera is the reason why she is not being sent gear !!! It would be great to see more of Monika and, as a lady rider, I'd be very interested in seeing her trying out gear !!!

Great job, Freddie and Monica. Great teamwork too. May I also remind y'all to not overlook an accessory that many riders will overlook: proper riding gloves that save the hands from road rash. Very often, the first part of your body to make contact with the ground are your hands. Kevlar and/or leather gloves are the best protectors for your hands, I have found from personal experience. Happy trails, y'all.

Hi Freddie, Take a look at the rating system below. Classification AAA: The highest level, with the machine spinning at 707.4rpm (the velocity of the sample holder being equivalent to 120km/h) in Zone 1, at 442.1rpm (equivalent to about 75km/h) in Zone 2 and at 265.3rpm (equivalent to around 45km/h) in Zone 3. Classification AA: More suited to touring gear, this specifies Zone 1 at 412.6rpm, 265.3rpm in Zone 2 and 147.4rpm (the equivalent of around 25kmh) in Zone 3. Classification A: Deemed suitable for urban riding, with Zone 1 requiring 265.3 rpm and 147.4rpm in Zone 2. There’s no requirement for abrasion resistance in Zone 3 materials. An "A" rated jacket's Zone 1 speed is only as high as Zone 3 on an AAA garment, which is equivalent to 45kmh (28mph). Google "diagram for zoning of motorcycle protective wear" for clarification on where the zones are on the garment. "A" rated garments are recommended for "Urban" riding, speeds up to 45kmh (28mph)? Riding at significantly higher speeds would not be advisable. Aesthetics and maximum comfort must give way to being safe first on a motorcycle.
@paulvarnsverry11
@paulvarnsverry11 Жыл бұрын
References to speeds were dropped from EN 17092 prior to publication because they are the abrasion test apparatus settings and not a ‘guarantee’ of protective capabilities in real world scenarios. Combined with this is the fact that the EN 17092 uses a surface comparable with the smoother asphalt and concrete road surfaces common in Europe, and not the 4.5x more abrasive surface-dressed roads which riders will encounter in the UK. At face value, AAA level appears adequate for use at all road legal speeds (and for some AAA garments this is true); however, tests conducted by MotoCAP,, which independently purchases and tests motorcycle clothing, reveal that garments have passed AAA requirements at a relative abrasion resistance of 1.4 seconds, not the 4 second equivalence with 120 kph promoted by some brands. The bottom line is that not all AAA garments are equal, and some may only be capable of providing adequate protection at urban speeds. Marketing claims that thin, lightweight textile gear at AAA class is in some way comparable with racing leathers which will be crashed in at well in excess of a ‘true’ 120 kph should be viewed with intense scepticism.
@mrflores7708
@mrflores7708 Жыл бұрын
@paulvarnsverry11 So if AAA is as you say, then "A" will be even worse.
@paulvarnsverry11
@paulvarnsverry11 Жыл бұрын
@@mrflores7708 : Potentially, possibly, probably: yes. It is currently unclear if there is overlap between A with AA, and AA with AAA. Even the authors of EN 17092 viewed Class A as suitable for scooter riders commuting in Rome in summer, for example. Making progress down a surface-dressed UK country route requires something more substantial between rider and road. The pass/fail abrasion test method in EN 17092 conceals the true capabilities of materials as it does not deliver a numerical result (the duration of test and distance to stop figures which are also generated by the apparatus do not form part of the determining result, but are calibration checks on the apparatus that are being misleadingly promoted to consumers by some brands as providing evidence of capability). To try to understand this, data-mining of the MotoCAP results for EN 17092-conforming garments is under way and should be available to share in due course.

That Knox jackets are very comfortable . I got one for me and one for my wife, they are superb to wear but the downside is that it becomes “old” very fast. Recently I found a British company called Ruroc and have bought a leather and a textile jacket from them. They are design lead and their jackets are excellent quality and design for both men and women. I wear my textile jacket all the time and have had several compliments from young men on the jacket! I can wear a fleece under it or a big jumper and it does not look bulky. Just take a look at their website they have very interesting gear. The detail is excellent, the quality is excellent and they are from Gloucester. 👍

I would recommend adding foot loops to keep the trouser in place if you go for a pair. To reduce the profile even more I added D3O Ghost armour to the shoulders and elbows. I like to ride with a hoody on when I am on my cruiser and the KNOX means I can choose a selection of hoodies to wear. I still tend to wear motorcycle jeans however.

I’ve seen some with loops, maybe a different brand? I’m struggling to find a pair of armoured combats that I like and am now considering the Knox trousers.

Good choice, Monika. I grabbed a Knox Armoured shirt a few years ago - after reading about them in a BikeEXIF article - and in preparation for a Gentleman's Ride. So, first outing: under a collared shirt & tie, and wearing a waistcoat. Later found that it also fitted perfectly under my 'vintage' (pre-armour era) leather jacket - result! Since, I have worn it just under a big baggy t-shirt, a hoodie, even a zipped regular 'walking' jacket. The Knox shirt has a surprising 'thermal' quality - but I have, on occasion, slipped a thin merino layer on, then the armoured shirt, and then a jacket over that. Well happy - a complete game-changer for me. So much so that I later tried to achieve the same result with armoured pants, but (sadly) these just didn't work as well as the shirt for me - the concept is equally great; they fit under loose, heavy trousers, dress trousers/chinos (Gentleman's ride), denims, etc. and are (as you say) very low profile, but I personally find that the armour 'wanders around' in use - but hey! it could just be my knobbly knees (o: Hope it's 'game changing' gear for Monika, too.

Freddie, was looking for a stylish leather jacket and after seeing your vlog on Monica’s plight on finding a suitable riding jacket and your subsequent trip to Urban Rider, I have just purchased a black leather Merlin Wishaw Signature jacket at an absolutely brilliant price from Urban Rider, online . Thanks for the heads-up!

The Knox-style lightweight jackets also work well in very hot climates. You could thrown on a waterproof outer layer if it rains or gets colder.
@yardenl1998

What do you think is better for hot climates weather? The Knox A rated Action shirt (lighter but as breathable) or the Knox AA rated Urbane Pro (heavier but more breathable)? I own the previous verison of Knox Urbane Pro Shirt (A rated) but it's thick and I sweat in it during summer. I can't wear over it knits only hoodies or big jackets. Will the new Action Shirt be better?
@fallinginthed33p
@fallinginthed33p Жыл бұрын
@@yardenl1998 I would go for the lighter version of the Urbane Pro for summer riding. You could probably use an armored hoodie with it during colder weather, but with the armor removed.

It's interesting to hear folks from the UK say or call things "KIT". For an American when we hear that we think of a whole kit/package/outfit. Wow that top looks more like a workout top than a moto top. I'm actually glad Europe has standards and ratings with safety gear. The US not so much of anything except DOT helmets. Since these standards, moto safety gear has gotten much safer due to being required to be tested and pass unlike a couple decades ago.

I'm thinking of getting a heated vest but the entire kit (battery and vest) is £200. Too much for what would be six weeks of riding in the Algarve. Still, it's bloody freezing here now, full on winter. Time for layers, lots of them.

Beige? BEIGE? That's not beige that's Gloss Antique White. Now go and sit on the naughty step for half an hour Dobbs and repeat after me "it's not beige". Lovely video as always, Urban Rider is my local which makes life easy to get good gear even if the temptation is almost too much to resist. Good call on the Knox gear I picked up an Urbane Pro jacket (at Urban Rider of course) which I'll use any time of year varying what I wear over the top from a shirt to a deliciously battered Barbour International I picked up in Oxfam. And their Richmond jeans are THE MOST COMFORTABLE jeans I've ever worn, thanks to their stretch denim. They're so comfy I'll wear them day in day out whether I'm riding or not especially this time of year when the full Kevlar liner keeps me nice and toasty. Urban Rider may not be the cheapest but they know their stuff, make great KZbin reviews of all their products and their dedication to measuring every piece of gear they sell themselves so buyers know the real sizing is spot on.
