This man kept his illness private and never once looked for any sympathy. He did this video while being in a lot of pain and on top of that he never shared his diagnosis with the media, because he didn't want it to overshadow the band's music. The music was all he cared about. He wanted to touch his fans and share his gift and this is what we need to celebrate about his life.

True. He was a performer, and he died as a performer. A great icon.

So true. And knowing now what we know about AIDS you can definitely tell he is right at the initial stages of it where the Steroids add size to the face. The fact that, according to Roger, he would go into the studio in his later years, record three takes of lyrics, and tell the guys to use the best one is a true testament that it was much more important for him to churn out as much music as possible vs having anyone have concern about his illness. He has and will continue to stand the test of time. He is always going to be the standard.

Darcy Larson he wasn’t in a lot of pain for say... he didnt have aids yet in this video, he was in the same state as during the magic tour so he was bad yet in this video... he did this video just after figuring out he got hiv and has had it for a while (probably since 1982)

@@AmGona this video is from 1987, the year he discovered he had aids. However, his illness was still in an early stage, so I believe he wasn't suffering from it back then.

@@ofekool225 i thought this video was from when he first got HIV... also people have said hhe might have contracted it in new york in 82 as he was already showing HIV symptoms, but this video was the period right before he got AIDS, i think a month or two

This is so haunting. At the time it must have seemed to the public that this video was all about Freddie's ego, but in hindsight it was him dealing with his own mortality and celebrating all he'd accomplished. I heard in an interview that he covered this song because it spoke to his role as a 'pretender', meaning the stage personas he created. But, it seems to have another meaning too, that he was struggling with his awareness of his illness and hiding it. "Pretending that I'm doing well." This video makes me feel like he was trying to find ways to say goodbye to all of us. He stayed so positive til the end.

@sirBrouwer
@sirBrouwer 3 жыл бұрын
@@nyles66 finding it better or not is subjective. a cover means that the person covering the song is not the person the song writer had in mind when they wrote the song. A good example is every recorded version of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in d minor is a cover as Bach initially wrote it so he him self could play it. You also have different versions of a cover. you have a 1 to 1 cover of a song. using the exact same instruments and all to get as close to the original as possible. you have covers were like in this song the musicians use different instruments and (counting Freddie's voice as a instrument) you also have covers where musicians add parts to the song . then you have musicians that will use part of a song and/or melody and make a new song on top of it. to the extreme of using a song in such a way that it becomes it's own thing all together. where you could even question if it's still a cover or has become it's own thing.

What is there to be said about Freddie? His magnetic charisma was off the scale, his unbelievable stage-presence was electrifying, his songwriting abilities produced some of the biggest hits in music history and finally, that voice! In Freddie, we were graced with the greatest frontman in the history of rock and roll. A totally, inimitable, uncomparable and unique talent, that we will never again see the likes of. Just like Hendrix, Sinatra, Joplin, Bowie, Prince and Simone, there can never be another! When Freddie and other great artists were made, the mould was thrown away. From the UK Freddie, we love you, still miss you terribly and will never tire of listening to that fucking unbelievable voice of yours. RIP man, your legacy is our biggest gift! Xxx. Chris (UK).

Well said! I'd love to think of another metaphor or simile to add that might inspire others to add their own, but I can't think of a more appropriate or heartfelt comment. My only contribution is a theft from "The Phantom Of The Opera" ... to me he is the Angel of Music. Discovering him reawakened my passion for music and to hear and see him immortalized on video at my fingertips makes me feel he is still near. I think of this whenever I see the video for "A Kind Of Magic," as he looks so much like The Phantom in that video. The lyrics are appropriate as well!

I honestly don't think we will ever come across a music artist like Freddie ever again. He is just so.. unique. Queen music has changed my life. Whenever I listen to it, I just get this short boost of hope, happiness and inspiration. Whenever that runs out and I feel sad and bored I listen to another amazing song. I wasn't even around during his life but time doesn't make a difference in what type of person he was. I hope heaven exists so I can meet him for the future of my life.

As a huge fan of Queen, I’ve only recently came across Freddie Mercury’s solo work. I absolutely love his singles stuff and this song in particular is both sad & excellent at the same time. The recreation of all of Queen’s music videos and other Mercury solo videos are a great homage, he really was The Great Pretender! RIP Freddie Mercury

@DWtechfan
@DWtechfan 2 жыл бұрын
@@cjmorton2436 I didn’t really get into Queen until the late 90s/early 2000s. I wasn’t even aware Freddie Mercury did solo songs and an album, but I like his solo work as much or maybe more than all the Queen albums. Mr. Bad Guy had songs that I play on my Apple Music daily. It’s really sad that Freddie says he’s lonely in “The Great Pretender” and again in “Livin’ On My Own” and it paints a picture of a man much deeper and self aware than his stage persona. If Freddie had made more solo albums, there’s no telling how many dozens of great songs we’d have gotten. I’d easily put Freddie Mercury as the top pure vocalist and performer of all time.
@cjmorton2436
@cjmorton2436 2 жыл бұрын
@@DWtechfan I know right. It would’ve been amazing. Freddie and I were born around the same time. In 1955, when R&R and doo wop were in their infancies, I can imagine Freddie becoming aware of 'The Great Pretender' by the Platters. However, I cannot imagine him foreseeing how he would give new meaning to the lyrics years later. Each are magnificent in their own way and in their own times. I rank Freddie and Queen with Elvis in my lifetime with music.

@@yousteade there is no look alike or successor because when you are born with that Talent you are one in a million. Adam.lambert might not be the Freddie Mercury that we hoped for but he himself says he did not want to replace Freddie Mercury. Nobody can replace the great Pretender himself
