Paul Rodgers, the lead singer, toured with the remaining active members of Queen several years ago as Queen + Paul Rodgers. As for the crowd, that kind of reminds me of when I took my late Mom to a Milwaukee Brewers game on her birthday about 15 years ago. The crowd was going wild and she actually said to me "Why can't they sit down and be quiet?" I had no words for that.
@827dusty2 жыл бұрын
Paul Rodgers is the lead vocals in this Band, and this song. You may know him from a Band he started about three years later, called "Bad Company." Yes, that Paul Rodgers. He has one of the most soulful voices, not only in British Rock, but all of Rock and Roll. Born in England, he, and other British singers, like Eric Burdon (The Animals) Joe Cocker, had so much soul, and grit in their voices. I was in 7th grade when this song was released. I'm 65 years old now. Man time flies by fast.

Paul Rogers' voice is still spot on and pitch perfect at 70ish now. He can still hit all those notes.

Speaking as someone who went to gigs in those days, they were different times. Many of us went to see bands to listen, not to dance. Clubs and discos were where you danced if you wanted to. Gigs were where you just opened yourself up to the music and listened intently and, importantly, watched intently. I wanted to observe the musicians closely throughout to see what they were doing and how they were doing it, and to marvel in it because it was still all so new. So not crowd control but personal choice: an audience riveted by the performance, watching in silent, respectful fascination.
@gistechrep38162 жыл бұрын
Right. Most rock-n-roll was considered 'head music' then. Haven't heard that term in a long time. Free was Paul Rogers' spring-board to Bad Company, he also filled-in as lead singer with Queen in the 2004/2005 timeframe.

I know what you mean. Back in my times, ‘70s early ‘80s, no mtv, and rare tv visual outlet for great rock bands. I’d listen to every little detail of the song. Try to rewind five seconds on a cassette tape just to make sure that was harmonica riff. I remember how blown away I was to see these amazing sounds being played in real life. Case in point; my first rock concert was Emerson, Lake & Palmer. I thought no way would three guys do this live. I’m 60 yrs old and I will never forget that concert. I think concept video ruins a song. And yes, Keith Emerson did the flipping piano.

His body was returned to England and cremated at Golders Green Crematorium in North West London. His epitaph in the Summerhouse there reads: "All right now"

@Jamel Looks like a BBC recording. You'll just have to get used to the audience sitting still in a concert. That's the way it was in the 60s and early 70s. In fact it was considered bad form to intrude on someone else's enjoyment by singing along or clapping. The attitude was "I came here (and paid good money) to listen to Free perform, not you". In clubs and elsewhere it was different but not in a concert setting. (Context: I'm 74 years old, live in the UK and went to several concerts in this time period)
@williamball93142 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the audience but this is how things were in the 70s - much more primitive sound equipment and once it was set up to record the band in the less than perfect acoustics of a TV studio that was it: audience reaction after was fine, but during was not! We are 30 years before MTV - these aren't 'music videos'. I saw Free with my future (and still) wife at Manchester University the same weekend that they recorded this for TV in 1970. Check out Ringo Starr's All Starr Band version with Simon Kirke (Free's drummer) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWrZq5pmeMSbm6s - awesome!

Regarding your comment about the crowd not reacting: I guess I don't focus so much on the energy of the crowd (especially when the band's performance is so dynamic), so personally that doesn't take anything away from my own enjoyment, although obviously you disagree. In any case, I think this is another case of this being performed on a television show where they were just one of the acts appearing, so it could be that a lot of folks in the crowd aren't particular fans of their music, but were in the audience for other reasons. But it is indeed a testimony to the professionalism of the band that they are giving so much without getting much back from the crowd.
