I watch Ken Burns 'Unforgivable Blackness' quite often. Jack Johnson's parents were remarkable. As ex-slaves, they owned their own home by the time Jack came along (1878), and insisted all of their children be literate. I find that, 150 years hence, to be heroic and inspiring.

Ive always wondered why black people who were born free in the North of America or even from the UK would chose to travel to the South of America during the slave trade, with the belief that thier papers would protect them.??
