I appreciate the clarification. Before taking my exam, our instructor posted some example problems for us to do. In the multiple choice two of the answers was dependent upon whether you used cosine or sine, so this is very important that a person gets this right.

I've learned that if you "lay down" force to the angle (close the angle) that's when it's cos and when you "stand up" force (to 90 degrees) it's sin. It was easy for me to remember this that way :)

I’m taking college physics with calculus right now, and I’m realizing that triangles are the coolest thing ever. Also I loved when you took the limits of the trig functions, it makes so much sense!
@PraiseTheDreadFather
@PraiseTheDreadFather 4 жыл бұрын
I was having difficulties in Statics with figuring out which trig function (sin, cos, tan) to use when breaking forces down into their x and y components, but with that quick little revisit to trig (which I had a shaky foundation on from High School) really helped me out. I was getting confused as to why components of force in the X had sine in them but now I see it just comes down to basic trig.

Thank you for engaging my utmost attention and for producing this work. You've enlightened me in numerous ways and foremost is probably the part about taking the limit of theta. I can now see were one to stand a wet wooden beam measuring, 16ft x 4in x 4in, on its end and then lean it slightly against a wall and the using your setup I can calculate how much force is pushing against this wall. Correct me if I'm wrong please. If I perform a press handstand and walk up a wall using the wall to support my balance, it's evident to me much of the mg will be passing through my fingers but a percentage of my body's mg will be transferred to the wall. If theta is close to zero then a good 99% of the total mg is going go through my hands to the ground. I've never had pointed out to me the idea of reducing the subject under analysis to a dot. Brilliant.

Once you have found the Theta angle, the rest follows suit. As the professor says, just go creative, check it out, mistake yes, mistake not, and you will conclude into the right understanding. Creativity, in this case, cannot go wrong but help to find the right angle and the corresponding sinus and cosine.

Nice video. I have a question based on this video. If a block is at rest on the incline plane at an angle of 30 degrees, would the maximum frictional force that would allow the block to stay in place be calculated using 30 degrees, OR would we have to find the minimum angle of the incline plane needed for the block to slide before we can determine the maximum frictional force? That is, find that minimum angle and then substitute it in the formula for fs(max) = UsMgcos (minimum angle needed for block to slide)?
@carultch
@carultch 5 жыл бұрын
Because normal force of a stationary object on an incline ends up being m*g*cos(theta), and the lateral component of the gravitational force attempting to make it slide is m*g*sin(theta), you'll notice that both trig functions appear here. At the critical angle where sliding initiates, m*g*sin(theta) = mu_s*m*g*cos(theta). Values of m and g both cancel, and we are left with mu_s = tan(theta), relating the static friction coefficient to the critical incline angle. Doesn't matter how much mass the object has, doesn't matter whether we do this experiment on Earth or the moon. A full crate and an otherwise-identical empty crate, will have the same critical angle on the same incline surface.
