#ImranRafai #FreeCCNA - OSI Model - TCP-IP Model - Day 2: The Open Systems Interconnection model (OSI model) is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the communication functions of a telecommunication or computing system without regard to its underlying internal structure and technology.
In this video lecture, Imran explains the OSI model and the TCP/IP model. He compares and shows how data flows through the network.

Dear Sir, Thank you very much for your lecture. I have a better understanding of these huge tones of material. However, I would like to ask TCPIP consists of 4 or 5 layers? In the exam, should we adopt the 4 layers approach or the 5 layers approach?

I guess, Imran exactly knows where the newcomers' issue could be. He targets those area and adds one or two sentences for explaining that area so that it gets into our head. I am loving his videos. Five fingers of the hand are not the same and not all teachers can spot those weaknesses of the students. I exactly have the same issues with my teacher and that's why using these videos. May God bless Imran!

@@TheRohel i have a question. As he said that in transport layer, port number is added to the ip address. but afterwards he said that ip addressing is done in network layer.so how does the port number is added to the ip address when it was not even created.

@@nadraibrahim6400 Hi. Your question is very legit (based on the lecture from this video) and I can answer it in 2 different ways - for beginners (easy explanation) and for intermediate/expert level (thorough). I have gone through this video for those 2 layers you mentioned and also read Cisco books so that I do not provide wrong info to you. Please note, the thorough answer will create more questions for you and will require more study for you to gain knowledge about. Please let me know how would you like me to address this question - beginner or advanced? :)

Thank you Imran! I really enjoyed the DEC/IBM history, as I learned to program on a DEC 10 in '77. This was a fun video and a great watch if you need a refresher on OSI! The "top down" approach was new to me, ie instead of starting at the physical layer and going 1-7, Imran starts at the application layer most people are familiar with. Think this would be a great way to learn and will watch the whole series now :)

well done, easy explanation, great slides, could i add this plz if u dont mind: Encapsulation and de-encapsulation ===>> The term "encapsulation" is used to describe a process of adding headers and trailers around some data by various protocols. At the receiving end, the protocol stack operates from the bottom to the top. Decapsulation is the process of reversing the encapsulation process. Example, data from the computer A has been sent through Internet to computer B. Application Layer is a layer which user works on, assume that we are sending Mail, the data is now sent to Presentation Layer. Presentation Layer converts the data to ANSII coded file which computer B can understand. Then the data sent to Session Layer and then to Transport Layer. Transport Layer cuts the data in to several pieces and add a Sequence Number to each piece in order to rearrange it properly by the receiving end. Then TCP header is added this encapsulated part is called Segment. Now the segment is sent to Network Layer. Network Layer adds the source IP address and destination IP address in order to route the packet through the internet. In this layer the encapsulated data is called Packet. Then packet is sent to Data Link Layer. Data Link Layer encapsulates the Packet with Source and Destination MAC Address and at the end FCS (Frame Check Sequence) for error checking is also added. This type of encapsulated data is called Frame. Now the frame is sent to Physical Layer. Physical Layer converts the frame into digital signal which can transmit through the Network Cable. Now the data has been sent through the Physical Medium.

Layer 3 uses IP addresses to communicate and Layer 4 uses port numbers for communication. A socket is the combination of port number and IP address. so, yes socket is created at network layer when Packets are added to segments.

It's just a way of thinking about it. The IP gets the data to the network, the MAC gets it to the device, and the port gets it to the application session/instance. Since the port combined with the IP address turning the whole thing into a socket is a Transport layer function, most people (I'd wager) tend to think of the socket as being a layer 4 thing. Just think of it from a receiving point of view (layer 1 to 7) instead of a sending point of view (layer 7 to 1). But I see your point.

Hi .. I'm currently watching your CCNA lecture.. I'm not new to network but I'm not also a master of it. Watching this lecture helps me to understand and knows the network fundamentals not just knows how to do or say it but really understands how network flow/infrastructures are working. I'm also planning to take a training and hopefully able to take and make the exam. Currently I'm a System Administrator on my company and really wanted to add knowledge about networking since I know that System and Network administrators should know each jobs ;) thanks again!

I have a question: Shouldn't the session layer of OSI be in the transport layer of the TCP/IP suite? That would make more sense to me since in the TCP/IP model it is actually the transport layer that takes care of sessions using TCP or UDP.
