These tools are awesome. Thank you for sharing. I'm going to lie and I probably didn't need to mention this but I thought you were going to cry at the beginning of the video. All jokes aside. I appreciate you. I am very new DM who will be starting a homebrew campaign next week and this will be very helpful.

That’s amazing 🤣 i’m glad you were able to find some helpful stuff and I wish you the best of luck on the start of your campaign! If you have any other questions as you begin, this journey, don’t be afraid to comment on other videos. I always respond and can either point you in the direction of something helpful for it or make a video myself on the idea. On that point I just recently put out a video about how we think about game preparation I think for somebody just starting out there could be some useful things in there so you might check that out. It can be very easy to over prepare or think you need too much to get going. Thanks again and welcome to being a Dungeon Master I hope you enjoy the journey

Hands down, an awesome video. I’ve been playing for 42 years and you gave me four fantastic new websites I’ve never heard of. I’m a brand new subscriber. If you’d like ideas or someone to contribute, let me know. You’ve inspired me!

I can attest that Tetra Cube's Stat Block Generator is AWESOME! I have an extremely homebrewed campaign setting so monsters and NPCs need a lot of tweaking to fit. I knocked out a half dozen, customized creatures in less than 30 minutes. If the base creature is not available in the SRD you can copy and paste the relevant stats from either 5e Beastiary or enter it all from scratch. I print one stat block per page (I tried online but find I really like keeping a pen and paper GM binder) which gives me lots of room underneath for notes.
@AboveTheTableGamesАй бұрын
Yeah, it is super nice to use, and you can for sure pump out monsters quickly as needed. My setting is very similar with some encounters and creatures. And for people that have digital Notes can easily save the image of the stat block. Not to mention they’re continuing to add with what they can for base templates. I personally love the idea of paper notes, and GM binder, but I need to advance my ability to be organized IRL before I can consider it. I am constantly changing my format etc

@AboveTheTableGames Same. I think that's why I'm drawn (ha ha) to the pen and paper. I can scribble, I can write notes sideways, I can write or drawn anywhere on my notes, unlike with even the most free-form note taking apps. We use Trello for household tasks and I was all set to use it for DND and after the first few sessions I went to pen and paper. I particularly like printing out maps and writing directly on them (which I think is also what the Dungeon Dudes recommend) even though we use Owlbear Rodeo as an in-person VTT. I can just follow along on my paper map as my players move their virtual tokens around.
@AboveTheTableGamesАй бұрын
Yeah, I totally get that. And Having a reference Map is totally underrated. That actually saved my butt, not too long ago when our TV for digital maps stopped working at the table, I was able to still draw out the whole dungeon and reference things as needed because I had my own cheat sheet. Which would’ve been more laborious tapping back-and-forth while trying to run off of my notes.

Great stuff. I saw the thumbnail and thought to myself, the only tools you really need are pencil and paper. But now having watched, I see you mean design tools. Yep, you've got lots of good ones here. Keep up the great work.

Just discovered you. Awesome work my man. I would suggest a little more lighting , especially when you’re in front of the bricks . Will be using 2-3 of these
@AboveTheTableGamesАй бұрын
Thank you so much it really means a lot. I’m glad you enjoyed it and found something useful to use. & Yeah, this was filmed in the middle of the night unlike most videos that I film during the day, we had a lot going on the day I usually film so I was relegated to poor improvised lighting at like 1am haha

Enjoy! And thank you, yeah, it has a lot of capability, especially the more you know about the markdown code that it uses I believe there may even be people that make additional things you can add to it, but I’m not 100% on that

While I agree, especially if we’re using the word need and not want.Definitely not the case for everybody some of us are writers, designers, and fantasy dreamers. But some DMs are simply people who took up the mantle to be able to develop community that they can continue to pull together or because they really enjoy the game as a game and no one else was going to do it. Plus there’s scarce difference in using any of these websites generators and a random table from either a book of or your own creation. It’s merely a few programming steps.

5e tools lol
@AboveTheTableGamesАй бұрын
While I agree it is quite a useful reference tool. Officially: "5etools is intended as an easily-accessible digital reference for products you already own. Please ensure you only access content in accordance with your local laws." So it is in a grey area as far as recommending it to the public as a free resource.
@ChadJonesAYelpInTheDarkАй бұрын
If the game needs tools, perhaps it’s unnecessarily complicated so that the game designers can sell you more tools.
@AboveTheTableGamesАй бұрын
I mean it’s all subjective right? Technically, you don’t NEED anything. Some people would say you don’t even need half the rules. There is a mass variety of skill across all of those who run this game and not everybody is some bleeding heart creative filled with ideas some people need a little bit of inspiration or help, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do what they wanna do.
