Hey thanks for that lesson. Not a drummer myself but it helped me a lot with programming drums.

Pinn Sinratchatanan Hi Pinn, Thank you for the nice comments. Unfortunately, I don't have the time (or money) to produce hi-end videos, so I think for many that may be a turn off. Regardless, I am glad you have gotten something out of them, it is what keeps me going! Thanks, ML

Thanks for this video! Is there one main hi-hat pattern that all jazz drummers agree on for 3/4 swing (like there is for 4/4) or does it depend on what the other instruments are playing?

+Vin Hi Vin, Thanks for reaching out. That is a great question; just like different ride cymbal patterns in the jazz idiom (especially in 3/4 time), you will find some patterns that are more common than others. So I would say no, there is not a standard high hat pattern in 3/4 time(especially compared to the more obvious 2+4 on the high hat in standard 4/4 time); I really think it comes down to what fits the music, and often times is dependent on a drummer's left foot independence. Speaking for myself, I tend to use maybe two or three options depending on the song, but a lot of it comes down to what I can do comfortably against the other limbs. Hope that isn't more confusing! Thanks, ML

Very helpful and good to know for the next jam session. So, 3/4 swing is basically blues, isn't it?
@mletalien8 жыл бұрын
+Vin Well, I can see why you would say that and not too confuse you further, but generally I feel/think of blues more in a 12/8 feel and jazz more in a 3/4 or 6/8. Listen to a blues tune in the feel you are talking about and try to count in phrases of 12; that may make more sense. Sorry to confuse you even further! ML

Of course 12/8 is technically the correct way but I generally end up seeing/feeling blues drumming as "double time 3/4 swing" if that makes any sense.

I've played drums by ear for about 6 years and cannot wrap my head around this one. Ugh.

You will! Just work on it in small portions, and when you get frustrated walk away....it will come!

@@mletalien I managed to get it! I'm trying my hand at Too Hip To Retire now. 😀😀😀
