The caption on the photo grabbed my attention ~ 'Can an OTTB jump?' Ha, ha! Until the 1980s, everything at every H/J show was an OTTB (with a handful of crossbred exceptions in the Jumper ring & some Field Hunters who showed in Corinthian classes, etc.). In the spring, 1960s & early 1970s, when horses rested over the winter instead of going to Florida, the exciting class was First Year Green. A hoard of green-broke TBs, most off the track, facing 3'6 the first time they entered the ring ~ always a thrill ~ before pre-green & baby green, etc. First time I rode a horse instead of a pony into the ring, it was an OTTB & we jumped 3'6" b/c there was no "children's hunter," just Juniors, & Juniors jumped 3'6. I still prefer riding TBs b/c I like to be able to blink my left eye & have the horse feel it. Starting an OTTB isn't rocket science. Thoroughbreds are more sensitive than other breeds, that's all. They demand good riding. Yours are both lovely w/lots of potential.
@Milestone-Equestrian4 жыл бұрын
I wish more people were open to taking on TBs now. I find that way too many riders are all about instant gratification and following trends, hence why attitudes have swayed towards believing warmbloods are more talented or not wanting to be patient with correctly producing OTTBs.
@natasharostova58594 жыл бұрын
@@Milestone-Equestrian Agreed. Not to sound like George Morris, but it's true that the overall quality of riding has declined. I've watched this happening at shows over the last several decades; it saddens me. I go to the best hunter show in the country & see swinging legs & bouncy hands. Most TBs won't tolerate those things. It's not rocket science to spend 1/2 hour a day in two point to build a correct base, nor is it rocket science to develop a soft hand. The main thing I miss seeing is a rider truly in synch w/her/his horse. The feeling of having a horse so tuned that he strikes off into the canter from a walk w/out losing impulsion ~ flowing into it ~ it's like Heaven. Ah, well. As long as judges want to see hunters plod around w/all the style & grace of a picnic table instead of looking for something you'd actually want to ride to hounds...

@Milestone-Equestrian4 жыл бұрын
At home, we probably would have but it’s less stressful for two youngsters to be out together than it is to have one stand in the trailer or have to stand tied/held by someone in the arena so in terms of risk assessment this was the safer option this time around. Thanks!
@familydaytrading4 жыл бұрын
They would make it look a bit easier if you altered the distance between the jumps. The distances aren’t too bad for a trot approach, but far too short when they approach in canter. It would be really cool to see them jump with the correct distances between the fences. 🙂

generally how old do you start to jump them? once their bones are formed totally? also what age do you typically start a horse under saddle? i read that their backs aren’t completely fused until they are 5, so why do so many ppl start horses at 2 or 3? you have way more experience with this than me, so i’m just curious😊
@Milestone-Equestrian4 жыл бұрын
I don’t jump under saddle until 4 but would free jump once or twice at 2 or 3. I typically start them lightly at 3. I think when they’re young being mindful of the weight they carry and for how long is important but I’m not personally of the mind that all bones must be fused before they start work as we don’t follow that for human athletes (or most animals), I think the work just should be age appropriate and unfortunately a lot of the futurity and young horse competitive classes don’t really encourage age appropriate exercise.
@maddalenahylton4 жыл бұрын
@@Milestone-Equestrian thank you! good to know. i agree, i think the work should match the age. i hate seeing things such as the snaffle bit furturity where they have 2 years old full out reining.

People seems to think that jumping comes naturally to horses, that they are either good or bad at it. Without thinking about how their vision works, and without teaching them hoof eye coordination. A good trainer, will help the horse with a distance pole on the ground, for the horse to get the right step in before the jump. And these are young, are they off the track, or just thoroughbreds?
@Milestone-Equestrian4 жыл бұрын
I’m an equine science student so am well aware of their natural tendencies, of which jumping actually is one. Free jump chutes are quite literally designed to set horses up for correct distances, even with distance poles, horses still need to figure it out and it’s a bit silly to assume any mistakes on the horses part are the fault of the distances of the chute and not the horse figuring out where to jump from... distance poles are rather useless until the horses actually learn and understand their purpose, which happens with trial and error. These horses are ex-racehorses, hence “OTTB”
