I got this mower a little while back for free. It is a 2014 Ariens (Husqvarna) 42 inch cut riding mower, but it basically the same as the craftsman mowers. Originally it was going to be used for parts, but lets see what it takes to get this mower running and operating again.

Great job bringing that mower back to life. That smooth running engine just needed the help of someone who knew what to do. Its impressive how quick you got the engine problems solved. I mb glad you decided to replace the deck instead of repair it. The old deck was just too sorry to repair.

Please don’t be too hard on yourself Alex, it may take you a while but you always figure it all out. I love the “murder mystery” aspect to your videos by eliminating the guiltless suspects. In the end “you always get your man” and solve the suspense mystery.

Spring time in western Illinois this mower would bring from 800-1000. Mowers are so high lately. I repair an sell used mowers and get good prices for them especially since store bought are so high lately. Cheapest new riding mower around here is $2000+

For the tire that doesn't hold air, try putting a little motor oil in it through the valve stem and let it sit for a little while. I've never heard of that trick before until watching Mustie1 last week and he tried it. And on part 2 of his video today, he said it's been 5 days and it's still holding air.

Thanks for the tip! I’ve been doing it for a while. I use ATV fluid in the tires and it works most of the time. It’s a nice little trick. I have so many machines with leaking tires it helps a lot.

Great job Alex! That one would definitely bring a premium for a used rider. In my area I would start at $1200 or so most likely. At first I thought just let it go lol but the end result was awesome! I know a lot of work went in to it. Video just doesn’t allow the reality of how much work it takes! Thanks for the video!

i acquired the same "pile of surprises" mower , but w/craftsman name . after tons of repairs/cleaning it looks nice . couldn't get any bites at $350 this spring . only 1 person even looked at it , and i think possibly it being gear drive killed their interest .

Great job repairing this mower. As for the price, I would pay up to 500-600 if I were in the market. However, I think 800 would probably be the most you can get.

Those old AYP mowers were decent machines if people would take care of them (but they rarely did). Since they were once everywhere and sold under so many different brand, people saw them as more disposable then they really were. If taken care of, serviced, and repaired as necessary, there really isn’t a life expectancy to them plus they have about the best steering turning radius of any riding mower I have ever driven! Typically, the higher end versions had thicker steel in the decks, but they’d all rust especially when left outside in the rain all the time and neglected. Some of the Briggs engine models had compression release problems and would need a new cam, but some came with rebadged Kolhler Command engines that were just excellent. The manual transaxles were factory filled with bentonite which gets thick as it ages and wears; first turning into a grease then slowly into a tar like paste. As that happens, the shifter gets harder to move and the internal parts become “starved” for lubrication. I removed and split my transaxle case open, cleaned out all the old bentonite in it, drilled and tapped a drain plug in the bottom (they don’t have one), and refilled it with gear oil so that I can service it easier. Probably not worth all the effort to rehab for resell (unless you just enjoy the work), but definitely worth the effort to build yourself a machine! They were simple compared to the feature on high end riding machines built today, but for quality and durability, you’re far better off rebuilding one of these 15-25 year old machine for a fraction of the cost of a new high end rider if you want something that is cheap and easy to get parts and accessories for and that you can keep in good service yourself for a very long time.

Thank you for all of the knowledge on these machines. I did not know that with the manual transmissions. These really are great machines. I think some of the best built for the price. If taken care of they would last many many years, and you can still get parts for them for the most part. It’s a shame that most things in this society are disposed of, but I enjoy saving what I can.

Alex, thats one of the worst tractors you have ever started to revive. Everything that could go wrong went wrong on that machine. As usual you made it look and run like new. That being a Ariens I would want $650-$700 for it at least. Job well done my friend. I will be looking forward to your detailing video. I still dont see anything on your wish list. ✌🇺🇸

Hey Alex, my name is Harry I live in California. I know you have a lot of parts mowers. I was wondering if you might have a fuel tank for a TDYT 4000 craftsman rider and if you do I would like to make arrangements to buy it from you or trade you I have mowers to.

Never use fix a flat it’s a pain in the ass to get off of the rim when you need to replace the tires. You’ll end up having to get a hole new rim when you need to replace the tire itself.
