Informative lesson-- would be helpful to tell what type brushes that were used? synthetic, sables,, ??Thanks for the lesson
@BrianNeherFineArt10 жыл бұрын
Charlotte Colosia Hi, Charlotte. Thank you so much for the comment. I use a variety of brushes (both hog bristle and synthetic). Some of my favorites are Ruby Satin by Silver Brush Ltd. Another great manufacturer is Rosemary & Co. I've enjoyed painting with their Shiraz Long Flats, Flat Series 274 and Eclipse Short Flats. I usually get them in even sizes ranging from 2 to 12. Hope this helps. Take care and I wish you all the best with your art!

Enjoying your instructions. Are you working in oil or acrylic? Which do you prefer? Thank you!
@BrianNeherFineArt9 жыл бұрын
teresasartglass Thanks so much for the question! I prefer to work in oil because it provides an opportunity to achieve soft transitions when painting portraits because of the slower drying time. Take care and thanks again for the question!

What type of canvas are you using? It looks smooth.
@BrianNeherFineArt6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the question, Brenda! I use Claessens #13 Single Primed linen. It has a high thread count, making it ideal for painting portraits since there are not as many blemishes or bumps in the painting surface. The smooth surface provides an opportunity for soft blending, while not having to fight the texture of a more coarse canvas. I like the single primed version because it is a little more absorbent. The double primed version is a bit too slick for the type of work that I do. I hope this helps. Thanks so much again and have a great day!

Ha. Good luck resting your pinky on an oil painting. You'll be a mess and you'll probably ruin chunks of your painting. Having a bar or cane is a universal solution to the problem and very common. I agree that it would have been a nice tip to mention in the video for people who are used to drawing (or painting) with less messy mediums and aren't familiar with it.

I like the information you give in the lesson. It was a bit drawn out for me though. Very informative and I like that however, I have to ask . . . what is with the cane? I found it very distracting I kept waiting for you to mention it because you kept fiddling with it throughout the entire video. I'm sorry, but I would rather you left it out of any future videos. I believe you could have made the video a lot shorter as well.

OK. I see now after watching 44:10 minutes of this video that you are using it to rest your hand on when you paint. However, I think you could use some other way (using your pinky) to steady your hand that would not be so distracting to the video lesson. Also you could have pointed out the fact of why it was there and what you were using it for in the beginning and I probably wouldn't have given it another thought but since you did not it was a point of distraction for me the entire time.

too much control, it is too slow
@BrianNeherFineArt10 жыл бұрын
Mat Moslih Hi, Mat. Thanks so much for the comment. The purpose of this video is to help introduce students to the four foundational principles of representational art. Because of this, a more methodical pace was used to help students understand and retain as much knowledge as possible. Thanks so much again for the feedback. Take care and have a great day!

Ok for teaching purpose, but hopefully people will be using a real apple when they paint, not a photo.
