Tony, I saw this video about a year and half ago and have been using Photoscape X ever since. The free version has all the editing features you need to make printable photos and it never expires. It hasn't been updated in a couple of years, but it's still very useful and way easier to use than any of the other free option. I recently upgraded to the pro version for a few extra features and as an amateur photographer, I believe this is all I will ever need.

Perfect, I downloaded one and it is very nice. I will have to learn it, but it is WAY better than the basic windows photos tools. LOL

Thanks for the review Tony. About RawTherapee, don't forget to activate the tool if you see a "power button" in the tool's header ;) otherwise the slider might create an entry in the history but will not update the image. One more small tip for those tempted by this software : right click over a tool's header to expand it and collapse all the others, making things less intimidating. And you have different mean of doing color adjustments in so different tool, at some point you'll have your preferred ones.

Hi Tony in Photoscape X Pro you can save the changes you make in a photo. Instead of going to save go to the three dots to the right click on that then you will see save project. It saves file as a .psxprj project file. I think this is a great program has tons of features and capabilities other programs do not have. I use many other programs but find this one offering a lot of unique features.. I will always use it to do neat looking graphics.

Thanks Tony. PhotoscapeX gotta be the best damn quick edit for RAW photos I've seen and used. And really, a pretty good basic editor as well. Seriously, sometimes simple really is the best. Hi Tony, I'll try to keep this fairly short, I am just starting out in DSLR with a Nikon D3300. I found your video extremely helpful and love your style. I am currently wading my way through your SDP book, so much info available, unbelievably low price, I had to give it 5 * on Amazon! The review of editing software was very helpful, esp. Photoscape, I have a very old version of Photoshop that I find cumbersome. Now to the question, I shall shortly be visiting Andalusia, Alhambra, Córdoba and Seville and would like to take photos that I can quickly share on social media, plus, spend some time on editing back home, adding some effects and compiling an album. Do you recommend switching from JPEG to RAW on the camera as I go along, choosing RAW + fine in the menu, or would the jpeg fine setting give me enough edit ability in Photoscape? I am also guessing that, inside historic buildings, aperture priority setting would be best. I will be on guided tours and I take your point that "take lots of shots and delete later" is the best strategy, however, I will probably have seconds rather than minutes to compose most shots. Thanks very much, keep up the good work, I don't know how you find the time! We beginners really appreciate it and I will certainly be spreading the word of your excellent book here in the U.K. Rick Bryant

I use to do just about everything in Lightroom, and occasionally Photoshop. Couldn't keep using the subscription, Thank you for the demonstration of PhotoScape X as I was really wanting to get away from Gimp for doing some of the more artistic edits that I use to do in Lightroom. Now I'm thinking that I will start with Raw Therapee for the Raw, save off a Tiff or PNG and do the artistic editing in PhotoScape X for the final picture export to JPG. Thanks for helping to decide how to finish out the Work flow.

One killer feature in RAWTherapee is the rotate tool. For straightening horizons or other things there is a tool in rotate that allows you to draw a line and RAWTherapee will rotate the image to make the line straight. Draw the line on the tilted horizon and RAWTherapee will level the horizon.

Might want to consider "free-ish" vs truly free open source. Photoscape is a closed source proprietary freemium kind of app. As such, they may change the terms at any time, and your "free" app now has a much fewer free functions, time limit, etc etc. RawTherapee is truly open source FLOSS and having used FLOSS including Linux for many years, these projects generally remain dependably free and open. I used RT on Ubuntu about 8 years ago and it was kind of primitive, now it just rocks and is incredibly polished. Aside from that, the whole fact that Photoscape does not save edits to a file at all, just a jpg, and if you want to change your edit at a later session you have to start over? Even if you just switch to another photo? (32:40) You have got to be kidding. I find that shocking and completely unacceptable, not sure how this program qualifies for any kind of recommendation. I mean, even Google Photos allows you to edit raw and never forgets your edit steps!

Its about time to put Lightroom to rest, as it has gotten slow enough to age while doing a picture edit. So, I am all ears!! What a lovely picture of Chelsea @4:00 ! Maybe you could have mentioned the expectations of someone with a A7RII files, and with a somewhat large database (200-500K files), and the speed of things based on a system designed for it, like what I have. I watched your PC build and I did some things like you, besides the onboard drives and cooling, but... 32gb, 6core 3.6ghz, SSD 500gb top drive, additional SSD for PS swap file (Also can put Pagefile on a 3rd SSD do you recommend?). Files are on a Intel Server at 50-80mbs sustained. GTX 970 nVidia 4gb graphics card. What else? Creating 1:1 previews is really creating a mess of things and I rather not do this for hundreds of thousands of images. Getting images ready for an exhibit and this LR is just not working, specially with the 5DM3 files are at a crawl, and the A7r2 files are halting LR.

And Pentax multiresolution images hadn't weird color shift like in Lightroom. Looked at the video. When I teach I recommend the FREE Topaz Studio. It's a great product, handles RAW files and I think it's easier to use than the ones you recommended. Even supports layers and layer masks in the free version. They do charge for some of the extra profiles/filters but the free version provides the needed functionality, PLUS it plugs in nicely into PS so anything you buy will work if you decide to step up to PS.
