Jose is the best printing channel on youtube. Very good resource. Refilling inks yourself is a great way to save money while printing at home

I find it's OK to refill ink yourself for B&W prints. Refilling colors though? ICC profiles go into a ditch. I do too much work to get colors the way I want just to have them go random at the end;)

I had the Pro 100, dropped it in a move. Loved it. Then didn't have a printer for a few years. In 2018 I purchased a Canon Laser printer and used that to print out many many many sheets to just give myself an idea of what it was I was doing in the real world. It was actually usable and the ink was super affordable with laser. I recommend this to anyone that wants to print just to see, or to layout or to collect or collate work into some sort of useable form in the real world. In 2021 I finally repurchased a fine art printer, this time the upgraded Canon Pro 300. It is smaller than the Pro 1000 but uses the similar pigment inks and has an archival rating of I believe 200 years!! I don't run prints through it as often, as I kept the Laser printer, but when I do I have sold these for higher prices and it doesn't break the bank when it comes to ink if I use it sparingly for specialized projects with the laser printer for sort of test prints and everyday tasks. Just my 2¢. (Also, in the 90s, I worked at Kinkos for like almost a decade and was in the business of digital printing and the art of it. The only other thing I think would be important or interesting would be a large run printer so you can do your own zines or journals. This is my personal next goal!)

It's a great printer! I have a Pro 100 I most often use to print in 13x19 frameless mode. Then I mount the print on 13x19 1/2" foam board from Amazon using photo adhesive spray. Total cost is like seven bucks per floating mount. I pre-attach "Command Strips" picture hanging velcro strips so that I can gift the prints ready to hang (stick, lol). Another great video Matt!

I get the print properly positioned on the board and clip it at one end with two clips. I then lift up the unclipped end and spray the spray adhesive from there. I recommend Red River paper stock.

I've run a Pro-1000 since it came out and have run at least 5 or 6 sets of ink through it over the last 4-5 years I've had it. Easily a full set of ink a year. It's a great printer for what it is, though, I almost wish I had gone even larger as I most often shoot 35mm and if I want to retain that aspect ratio, 13x19 paper (a 12x18 print) is realistically the biggest you can go without starting to waste paper as it's not that easy to go to a 16x24 print with a good luster or glossy finish, versus having the pro-2000 (or now pro-2100), you can just get the 24 inch paper on the roll and print 16x24 or even 20x30 no problem.

From what I heard and read, there is a new firmware update (apparently it's been around for a while) that will allow you to print up 17"x47.2" . I haven't tried it though.
@AdrianBacon
@AdrianBacon Жыл бұрын
@@mirindiolamepacifique7548 Yes, that's true, but there's not a lot of pre-cut sheet paper in luster or glossy finish that is larger than 17x22, so while it's nice that the printer can technically do it, getting paper that big in a 17 inch width can be a challenge. I suppose you can buy a 17 inch wide roll and cut your own, but that introduces needing the ability to trim roll paper as the Pro-1000 does not have a roll adapter or built in paper cutter like the bigger printers do.

Acquired this printer a couple of years ago on craigslist for $300 with half-spent ink carts and about $1000 of paper. A bit of a gamble but the printer worked perfectly as soon as I connected it. I use it for much the same kind of work as you and have been extremely happy with it. Spending nearly a grand on ink per year really sucks, but worth it in the end.

I do some darkroom printing, and have returned to printing on the large format photo printers. It so much easier to clean up a negative and print on a printer. It is also great to make a test print to proof before move forward with printing or a project.

I use this printer to run my online print store. If you put in the time to set everything up, it makes amazing prints. However like you said, the up front cost is HIGH. The ink set is about 1100$ CAD here, and some cartridges will run out faster than others. I generally avoid black and white prints on this printer, as it has issues resolving grey tones and absolutely EATS photo black cartridges. When I print for summer markets, I maybe go through 3 or 4 photo black cartridges by the end of the season just from small runs of 13x19 prints.
@lukasbusse2793

What do you mean by "issues resolving grey tones"? I chose the black and white mode without ICC-profile and everything is just fine. Never had color casts or any kind of problems with greys.
@vasilios1994
@vasilios1994 Жыл бұрын
@@lukasbusse2793 usually either loss of resolution due to the nature of the print being ink on paper mixed with the limited grey options in the ink, or banding in some greys most likely from a difference in bit depth between my camera and what the printer can output

@@vasilios1994 ugh, banding! sorry to hear that. I'm sure you know what you're doing and already getting the best out of it. The only situation I came across banding was semigloss paper in combination with only "high" instead of "highest" as quality setting. to read, what the paper needs, helped me out quickly.

It's interesting hearing your take on capturing life and how you print more digital than film. I have many harddrives of photos and videos of family life, from mundane moments to vacations, but for the most part they just sit there basically unseen for months and years, until one day the urge comes up to open up the folders and take a look. Film, on the other hand, I really enjoy dropping off a roll or two at the lab, and getting the prints (and digital files) a few hours later, and sharing those handful of moments right then and there. I've been thinking about investing in some kind of photo printer for a few years now, maybe it'll make going through and choosing those digital files a more common occurrence 🤔

When I purchased my Pro-1000 from a specialized shop two years ago, they told me to never shut it down, but let it run in standby. Starting and shutting down for every print session is bad for the system as a whole. In your video you turn it on, which seems like you shut it down before. Have fun printing, and don't be afraid to get into larger sheets!

I was given an A3 printer a couple of years ago from a friend, extra ink too and apparently it’s working, or was. As it’s now been sat quite a while now I think I’ll get rid of the old ink, try and clean the nozzles out then try new ink, I’ve nothing to lose.

Really interesting to hear about your use of a magnetic pin board to get an overview of your prints and how they sit within groups. I have been using a digital version of that , called Light Table, within Apple’s (sadly discontinued) Aperture app. It has been a godsend when selecting images for a magazine layout, triptychs etc. As I have been unable to find an alternative photo management app with this feature, I have had to keep one Mac running Mac OS High Sierra just to use with Aperture.

I have got pro-100. Canon used to regularly sell them "for free" only just for a little bit more than price of ink inside. Only in US, but I imported it through ebay :-) For full price I would probably buy rather Epson, but it still works quite nice.

Hi Matt. I’ve been thinking about going this route instead of building a dark room. Though my concern is not getting true black and white prints from the photo printer. Often I see cyan or hints of green, sometimes magenta in b&w prints from photo printers. Have you had any experience with this? Thanks 🙏
